Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrow

PRECIOUS GIFT

“Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts.” – 1 Corinthians 12:31

I am truly grateful to the Lord for blessing me with the creativity and talent for writing. I had once shared in a retreat that my passion is to write, my greater passion is to write about the powerful work of God in people’s lives, and my greatest passion is to write that I may glorify Him. Writing is such a precious gift that I wish to share it with others that they may know and give thanks to the Gift Giver.
As a writer, I admit to keeping alive in my heart the dream of publishing a bestseller. But you know what? Receiving an e-mail of thanks from a Didachereader for the reflection I shared, hearing from my Tita Lulu (who claims to be my no.1 fan) how she memorizes and passes on to others what I’ve written, or seeing Mom read, re-read and broadcast to our relatives and friends about my contributions are more than enough affirmation that indeed I’ve become the writer I’m meant to be, doing my little bit in spreading the Good News through the use of my gift.
And I believe that puts a smile on the Father’s face. Not even an entry into any bestsellers list can beat that. Dina Pecaña (dpecana@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights…” (James 1:17)

Father, may I always give thanks for the gift of myself and all that I am by Your grace, love and mercy.

COMPANION

1st READING

Jesus learned obedience through suffering. Mary, the woman of sorrow at the foot of the cross, retains her faith even with the death of her Son. Even our own suffering can draw us closer to God if we join it with Jesus’ and continue to entrust our lives into His hands. We may not understand now, but in the future all will be revealed. Trust in Jesus.

Hebrews 5:7-9 (or 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13)
7 In the days when he was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; 9 and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

P S A L M

Psalm 33:2-3, 4-5, 12, 22
R: Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.
2 Give thanks to the LORD on the harp; with the ten-stringed lyre chant his praises. 3 Sing to him a new song; pluck the strings skillfully, with shouts of gladness. (R) 4 For upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy. 5 He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full. (R) 12 Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he has chosen for his own inheritance. 22 May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us who have put our hope in you. (R)

G O S P E L

Mary was with Jesus to the very last. Her physical presence speaks to us also of her faith and trust in God. It did not falter. Imagine her joy and happiness when He rises from the dead. This resurrection experience will be ours, too, on the day when sorrow and suffering will end and we will be welcomed to the joy of eternal life. Let us prepare ourselves to celebrate it in its fullness through lives of discipleship starting now.

John 19:25-27 (or Luke 7:31-35 or Luke 2:33-35)
25 Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

my reflections
t h i n k : T he joy and happiness of Mary at the resurrection of Jesus will be ours, too, on the day when sorrow and suffering will end.

SABBATH

Stand By Jesus

I remember reading about a report in February 2009 from Zenit News, a news arm of the Vatican, about a Baptist nurse, Caroline Petrie, who was suspended from her job at the North Somerset Primary Care Trust for simply offering to pray for a patient that she was taking care of. The patient did not accept her offer and Petrie did not persist. But Petrie was subsequently suspended. The patient concerned, May Phippen, subsequently told the newspapers that she had not actually filed a complaint about Petrie’s offer and that all she did was mention it to another nurse. Phippen also said she did not want Petrie to be dismissed over the issue.
In an increasingly secular society, people cannot say the Creed, display the Cross, and even offer to pray for a neighbor. In the name of political correctness, is it illegal now to express solidarity to a suffering neighbor? Yesterday, we celebrated the Exaltation of the Cross. Today, we honor the woman who stood by the Cross of Christ. I can only imagine the pain Mary felt when she beheld the broken body of her Son. I can only imagine the confusion she must be having. I can only imagine the continuous ridicule that most probably were being hurled at her by those who crucified Jesus. Yet beyond the pain, the confusion and ridicule, Mary stood by foot of the Cross. Today, the Gospel invites us to behold the courage of Our Lady of Sorrows. No pain, sorrow or ridicule can snatch her away from Jesus. No “sword that pierces the heart” can intimidate Mary from standing by her Son. Today we celebrate not Mary’s sorrows. Christianity is not a religion of masochists. We celebrate today the courage, the conviction, and the love that made her stand erect amidst all her sorrows.Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
Think of the many ways when embarrassment, lack of conviction or political correctness prevented you from expressing in an ardent yet non-imposing way your Christian faith. Let Mary be your inspiration today and always.

God our Father, we thank You for giving us Mary as our Mother and exemplar in the faith. As we honor Mary in her love and dedication to Jesus, Your Son and Our Lord, make us happy and edifying witnesses of the faith that we have received. Amen.

St. Maximus, pray for us.
