ABSOLUTE GRACE

For the flesh has desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh... – Galatians 5:16

I have an uncle who had lung cancer. When my husband visited him in the hospital where he was undergoing chemotherapy, my husband had to find Uncle through the haze of smoke coming from his continuous smoking.
Stupid, you might say. But I find that all of us are guilty of the same thing when it comes to our faith. We keep going to church, even partaking of the sacraments, only to repeat our sins.
Should we stop trying to be good then and blame it on human nature? I searched for answers and here’s what I realized. God’s ideal is too high because He is God and is perfect by nature. But by realizing that I cannot ever reach that Ideal, I come face to face with the only solution that God offers — His absolute grace – the unmerited, generous favour that forgives all sins and accepts all repentant sinners. And because I am forgiven, because I am loved, I find that power within me to keep striving for His ideal no matter how many times I may have failed.
Quitting is not an option. To do so would make me fall from His grace and into oblivion.Cecilia Lim (cez_lim@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
We are all desperate, but mercifully, God offers us His abounding grace.

Lord, I am not worthy. But only say the word and I shall be healed.

COMPANION

1st READING

Elisha must have been aware of the importance of Elijah — otherwise, where does the motivation come from to leave all and follow him? Likewise, we have to choose the path of discipleship. Once we make that choice we will discover that the power of God will truly begin to manifest in our lives in different ways.

1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21
16 The LORD said to Elijah: “You shall anoint Elisha, son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah, as prophet to succeed you.” 19 Elijah set out, and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat, as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen; he was following the twelfth. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him. 20 Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please, let me kiss my father and mother good-bye, and I will follow you.” “Go back!” Elijah answered. “Have I done anything to you?” 21 Elisha left him and, taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them; he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh, and gave it to his people to eat. Then he left and followed Elijah as his attendant.

Psalm 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11
R: You are my inheritance, O Lord.
1 Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; 2 I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you. 5 O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is who hold fast my lot.” (R) 7 I bless the LORD who counsels me; even in the night my heart exhorts me. 8 I set the LORD ever before me; with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. (R) 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body, too, abides in confidence 10 because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world, nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption. (R) 11 You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever. (R)

2nd READING

Freedom is a very difficult concept to grasp today because there are so many different understandings of the word. We must discern what God means by this word and to follow that meaning. The Christian understanding of freedom is that capacity we are given by virtue of our free will to choose to do good. We need to pray for the grace to be able to do this and thus avoid abusing our freedom to follow sin.

Galatians 5:1, 13-18
1 Brothers and sisters: For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. 13 For you were called for freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another. 16 I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want. 18 But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Jesus is a man on a mission. He has set His heart on being obedient to God and there is nothing that will stop Him doing this. Look at the determination that resounds through the description of how He sets His eyes towards Jerusalem. We need to have the same determination as we seek to follow His will and live a righteous life. Anything as worthwhile as this will be a challenge, but the end result is worth it – namely eternal life.

Luke 9:51-62
51When the days for Jesus’ being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, 52 and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, 53 but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” 55 Jesus turned and rebuked them, 56 and they journeyed to another village. 57 As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” 59 And to another he said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” 60 But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 And another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home.” 62 To him Jesus said, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”

YOU WHO NEVER THINK OF GOD

There are times when the Scriptural passage really hurts to the quick. Amos, consistently, does not fail to do this each time his word is proclaimed. His words castigate; they convict, and they pose as not-so- gentle reminders to a people who seem to be so poor at remembering. “It was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt, and who led you through the desert for forty years.”
We are not unlike the Israelites who had such short memories. How true the saying, “out of sight, out of mind!” When the going is smooth, we forget. When the problems have long been solved, we forget. When life treats us fairly, we forget. And when we forget, the mind is not filled with godly thoughts, but all sorts of mundane affairs. We even forget God!
Today’s liturgy rouses us from our complacency: “Remember this, you who never think of God.”
Yes — you and me, who have gotten a little bit too cozy in our respective comfort zones — the scribes of postmodern times that have made it our lifetime passion to be just paying lip service to fulfilling God’s will, but unwilling to go the extra mile; the reluctant disciple whose love for father and mother takes first priority over discipleship. Yes, it is about you and me, who have ceased to be part of the people of the memorial, whose remembering spills over into celebrating and living what we believe.
The Mass is an act of memorial par excellence. As the beautiful song goes, “we remember; we celebrate; we believe.”
We who so easily tend to forget are now given a rousing call. Amos does for us a simple reality check. “Flight shall perish from the swift; the swift of foot shall not escape; and the most stout-hearted of warriors shall flee naked on that day.” Basically, he tells us the glaring truth: “Here we have no lasting city.” Material goods and earthly power will not save us from death. “Remember this, you who never think of God.” Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
When times are good, do I tend to forget God and remember Him only in times of difficulties?

Lord God, may I always remember to put You at the center of my life, in good times and bad.

St. Almus, pray for us.
