I’M A 10

“How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.” – Matthew 7:14

If I were to rank my life today from one to 10 where “1” means unfulfilled and “10” is very fulfilled, I’d confidently give myself a “10.” I feel a deep joy in my heart being in God’s service and living a life totally for the Lord.
Had the same question been asked of me 12 years ago — a time when I was experiencing God’s pruning and testing — I wouldn’t even have scored a “5.”
The road that led to where I am now was a rough and difficult one. I remember the time Dad succumbed to depression because, among other reasons, he couldn’t take my choice of life. That’s how unattractive and resistible in the eyes of the world the “narrow road” is.
It was only the words of a bishop who assured me,“You have chosen well,” that gave me strength at that time to continue walking where the Lord led me.
Now, I have no regrets. There may still be rough seas ahead but they can never take away the peace and joy of being in the Lord. Cristy Galang (cristy_cc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Am I walking the path of the Lord? Is there a call to turn back and find His path?

Lord Jesus, I want to celebrate the victory of following You. Lead me to Your path for I believe it is only there I can find real joy. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The Lord has not abandoned His people completely. The Southern Kingdom of Judah is spared defeat by the hand of God, not because they deserved it but because of His mercy. We celebrate today the martyrs of England, John Fisher and Thomas Moore. These are men who decided obedience to God was better than obedience to the unlawful decrees of the King of England and refused to recant their position. This is what we need in the face of tyranny and oppression — obedience and surrender to God’s truth and ways.

2 Kings 19:9b-11, 14-21, 31-35a, 36
9 Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent envoys to Hezekiah with this message: 10 “Thus shall you say to Hezekiah, king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God on whom you rely deceive you by saying that Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria. 11 You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all other countries: they doomed them! Will you, then, be saved?’” 14 Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; then he went up to the temple of the LORD, and spreading it out before him, 15 he prayed in the LORD’s presence “O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned upon the cherubim! You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made the heavens and the earth. 16 Incline your ear, O LORD, and listen! Open your eyes, O LORD, and see! Hear the words of Sennacherib which he sent to taunt the living God. 17 Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, 18 and cast their gods into the fire; they destroyed them because they were not gods, but the work of human hands, wood and stone. 19 Therefore, O LORD, our God, save us from the power of this man, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God.” 20 Then Isaiah, son of Amoz, sent this message to Hezekiah “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, in answer to your prayer for help against Sennacherib, king of Assyria: I have listened! 21 This is the word the LORD has spoken concerning him: “She despises you, laughs you to scorn, the virgin daughter Zion! Behind you she wags her head, daughter Jerusalem. 31 For out of Jerusalem shall come a remnant, and from Mount Zion, survivors. The zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.’ 32 “Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria ‘He shall not reach this city, nor shoot an arrow at it, nor come before it with a shield, nor cast up siege-works against it. 33 He shall return by the same way he came, without entering the city, says the LORD. 34 I will shield and save this city for my own sake, and for the sake of my servant David.’ ” 35 That night the angel of the LORD went forth and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. 36 So Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, broke camp, and went back home to Nineveh.

P S A L M

Psalm 48:2-3ab, 3cd-4, 10-11
R: God upholds his city for ever.
1 [2] Great is the LORD and wholly to be praised in the city of our God. His holy mountain, 2 [3] fairest of heights, is the joy of all the earth. (R) Mount Zion, “the recesses of the North,” is the city of the great King. 3 [4] God is with her castles; renowned is he as a stronghold. (R) 9 [10] O God, we ponder your mercy within your temple. 10 [11] As your name, O God, so also your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Of justice your right hand is full. (R)

G O S P E L

There are many paths that we could take in our lives and many of them will lead to God. There are some, however, that do not and we need to be extra careful that we avoid these paths. The road to holiness and virtue is not that wide because it is difficult to follow. It requires a lot of discipline and this is something that we do not embrace all that willingly. Let us realize that we have to make choices that lead to other choices in order to get anywhere in life. This is the same for our spiritual lives.

Matthew 7:6, 12-14
6 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces. 12 “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets. 13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. 14 How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.”

my reflections
t h i n k: The road to holiness and virtue is not that wide because it is difficult to follow.

SABBATH

SAVE US FROM THE POWER OF MAN

The tiny nation of God was ripe for the picking of despots like Sennacherib. Judah lay helpless and hopeless before the fury and might of Assyria. Help was not forthcoming, and the only available help could only come from their last bastion of defense, God. To God, they turned. In prayer. In humility. “Save us from the power of this man, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, O Lord, are God.”
How many times must we read Scripture to be convinced of this? But alas! We are a forgetful people with such short memories. This is why we gather Sunday in and Sunday out. We remember. We celebrate. We believe. What? Today we gather together with a proclamation: “God upholds his city for ever!” In our times, it is not just one man who goes by the strange name Sennacherib. It could be a popular legislator who authors immoral laws. It could be a top executive of the land whose only right to office is a rigged election, with the help of very dishonest bootlickers down the line in this dysfunctional political system that passes off as “democracy.” It could be the nice person next door, whose living comes from extorting money from otherwise honourable people whose desire for more leads him to bribe the right persons in the right times and places.
The list is legion. It might even be you and I, who have fallen into the pit of social sin that now masquerades as “practicality” and the need for “social networking.” God, indeed, upholds his city forever, but in the meantime, He could use a little help from you and me. And it begins right here, right now, not on some rainy day, and definitely not somewhere over the rainbow. Where and how do we begin? Take it from the Lord Himself. “Do not give what is holy to the dogs or toss your pearls before swine.” (Read: Waste not your precious vote!) “Treat others the way you would have them treat you.” (Read: Do not imitate corrupt leaders).Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
Do I allow myself to be influenced by the materialistic culture today? Or do I strive  to stick to the values that will bring me to heaven?

Lord God, grant me the grace to hold on to Your values and not compromise them with the world’s values. May Your our leaders draw their power from You and not from worldly sources.

St. Aaron, pray for us.
