the man !

Then Nathan said to David: “You are the man! – 2 Samuel 12:7

“You are the man!” It was sweet music to Steve’s ears.
His colleagues were congratulating him. There was a party in his honor. His idea is now a product. The president of his company even went to him personally, heaping praiseson him to high heavens. Steve felt good.
He felt so good that it went to his head. He treated his friends like they were second class. He dumped his girlfriend for a more glamorous one. He was living the life.
And then the product bombed.
Everyone around him disappeared. The boss blamed him and fired him. The glamorous girlfriend found a richer man. No co-worker dared to help him.
He came back to his friends, who, in the end, understood. He went on his knees and his former girlfriend took him in.
Sometimes we attribute our successes to our own doing and forget God in the equation. It’s only when we fall that we realize why all these things came to be in the first place.
Let us always remember who is the Source of the man. Jun Asis (mabuting.balita@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
We should always look at our successes as God’s providence and grace.

Thank You, Lord, for all my successes. All these things are possible only because of You.

COMPANION

1st READING

David’s willingness to repent redeems him in the eyes of God. This does not excuse him from his sin or even some of the consequences of his sin, but it does set him back in right relationship with God. The same will be true for us when we repent of our sins. There is nothing to fear and everything to gain from the Sacrament of Reconciliation where we celebrate the loving mercy and forgiveness of our God.

2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13
7 Nathan said to David: Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘I anointed you king of Israel. I rescued you from the hand of Saul. 8 I gave you your lord’s house and your lord’s wives for your own. I gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were not enough, I could count up for you still more. 9 Why have you spurned the LORD and done evil in his sight? You have cut down Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you took his wife as your own, and him you killed with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now, therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah to be your wife.’ 13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan answered David: “The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin: you shall not die.”

Psalm 32:1-2, 5, 7, 11
R: Lord, forgive the wrong I have done.
1 Blessed is the one whose fault is taken away, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes not guilt, in whose spirit there is no guile. (R) 5 I acknowledged my sin to you, my guilt I covered not. I said, “I confess my faults to the LORD,” and you took away the guilt of my sin. (R) 7 You are my shelter; from distress you will preserve me; with glad cries of freedom you will ring me round. (R) 11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you just; exult, all you upright of heart. (R)

2nd READING
Paul knows the power of the truths he proclaims here in his Letter to the people of Galatia. It is the work of God to redeem us and forgive our sins — it is His gift to us. What this does is recreate us in Christ and make it such that it is really Christ who lives in and through us when we have faith in Him. God comes to live with people of faith in such a way that we are transformed into His image and likeness in a new and greater way than we were at Creation.

Galatians 2:16, 19-21
16 Brothers and sisters: We who know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. 19 For through the law I died to the law, that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ; 20 yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.

G O S P E L
Let us take every opportunity we are given to minister to Christ. This means we will have to be attentive to the needs of those around us for the most likely opportunities we will get are with the poor. As Jesus tells us in Matthew 25, those who comfort the sick, feed the hungry and thirsty and visit those in prison are the ones who minister to Him and will be welcomed into heaven.

Luke 7:36-8:3
36 A Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him, and he entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. 37 Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.” 40 Jesus said to him in reply, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. 41 “Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred days’ wages and the other owed fifty. 42 Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon said in reply, “The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven.” He said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment. 47 So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.” 48 He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 The others at table said to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 But he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” 8: 1 Afterward he journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the Twelve 2 and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.

SABBATH

LOVE IS AS LOVE DOES

Forrest Gump is a lovely movie. One thing I like about Forrest is his uncomplicated and untrammelled honesty. What you see is what you get. One does not need to secondguess Forrest in his disarming naivete. Quoting his own mother, perhaps mistakenly, Forrest reportedly once averred: “Stupid is as stupid does.”
One cannot argue against this homespun wit and wisdom of little boy Forrest. One’s interior attitude cannot but manifest itself in one’s external behavior. Handsome is as handsome does. Doing follows being. Action follows character. Good actions follow a virtuous attitude.
There is no doubt that the woman in today’s Gospel passage has a reputation of the wrong kind. Most likely, people were talking about her in hushed whispers wherever she went. And that definitely includes this time when she enters the Pharisee’s house and proceeds to do just as her heart dictated — wash the feet of Jesus with her tears and lavishly anoint them with perfume.
We cannot deny her once sinful ways. But neither can we deny her now loving ways. Her love brought her to concrete action: conversion as shown in her humble, repentant and loving act of washing the Lord’s feet. She exemplifies what we, in our feeble faith, can only afford to mutter perhaps less convincingly, “Lord, forgive the wrong I have done” (Responsorial Psalm).
There is good news that awaits us today. The Lord looks not so much at our reputation or the way people look at us and the way others may have categorized us and put us in a box, sort of. He looks at the heart. He focuses on our interior attitude. And there, in our innermost self, resides our utmost desire for God and His justice, His love and His limitless solicitude.
In her heart, the sinful woman knew this. In her heart, though seen as sinful by many, she nurtured a lot of love. And that love brought her to action. She repented. She showed her love for the Lord, amidst copious tears of sorrow for sin. Her love showed in concrete action. And in proportion to that great love, she was forgiven much.Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
When I say I love God, how do I show it? When I say I love my neighbor, how do I show it?

Lord Jesus, teach me to follow Your example of loving — by showing it in concrete action. There’s still a lot I have to learn in the ways of real loving.

St. Aquilina, pray for us.
