my secret in giving

“… all contributed from their surplus wealth… has contributed all she had…” – Mark 12:44

Let me share with you my secret in giving. The less I have, the more I give. The more hesitant I am to give, the more I give. The more I struggle to give, the more I give. Because that’s when I believe I’m really giving.
Of course, I know that you cannot give what you do not have. But I know, too, that no one can be totally empty that you have nothing to give. Run a checklist of your three T’s — treasure, time and talent — and you know you must have one of these to share. Giving can also be “giving up” of some things for a higher cause. You can “give up” your pride by admitting your faults and asking for forgiveness. You can “give up” your anger and stubbornness by wearing a genuine smile. Or “give up” a recurring sin that you’re attached to and is hurting yourself and people you love and finally decide — enough!
It may not be easy… because giving is dying a little — or a lot. But then again, it is in this kind of giving of ourselves that we find real joy, peace and so much freedom in our hearts.
Learn from the widow who gave all she had — and be free.Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
What are the things that you have been holding on to? Are they due to be given away?

Take and receive, O Lord, my mind, my heart, my soul, my strength, my every being. Let me receive You fully in my life. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The first few verses address the phenomenon of people going where their feelings, likes and dislikes direct them. They are not overly concerned with discerning the truth, but what panders to their whims and fancies. This is a recipe for disaster and we reap the fruits in drug and alcohol addiction and in the fracturing of society that results in class distinctions and ultimately leads to terrorism.

2 Timothy 4:1-8
1 Beloved: I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient;  convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. 3 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers 4 and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. 5 But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry. 6 For I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. 8 From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance.

Psalm 71:8-9, 14-15ab, 16-17, 22
R: I will sing of your salvation.
8 My mouth shall be filled with your praise, with your glory day by day. 9 Cast me not off in my old age; as my strength fails, forsake me not. (R) 14 But I will always hope and praise you ever more and more. 15 My mouth shall declare your justice, day by day your salvation. (R) 16 I will treat of the mighty works of the LORD; O God, I will tell of your singular justice. 17 O God, you have taught me from my youth, and till the present I proclaim your wondrous deeds. (R) 22 So will I give you thanks with music on the lyre, for your faithfulness, O my God! I will sing your praises with the harp, O Holy One of Israel! (R)

G O S P E L

We need to consider our moral duty to provide for the works and maintenance of the Church just as we do the state through taxes. The value is not in the monetary amount — look at the widow’s mite in today’s Gospel. Some people and groups talk about tithing but I think a better measure is for each of us to seek God’s will for our offering and to give as generously as we can.

Mark 12:38-44
38 In the course of his teaching Jesus said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, 39 seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.” 41 He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. 44 For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”

my reflections
think: We need to consider our moral duty to provide for the works and maintenance of the Church.

SABBATH

WHEN BOASTING IS CALLED FOR

We usually can’t stand braggarts. People who know nothing better than to extol their achievements find themselves in no time with hardly any interested listener. People who brag about themselves all the time. Their overriding aim is to prop up their egos in the hope of putting down everyone else’s.
But Paul, about whom we have been speaking over the last few days, is in a boasting mood; this, for more than just a good and cogent reason. To speak needlessly and endlessly about oneself and one’s achievements, no matter how true, is bragging. Paul, who now delivers his swan song and says farewell to his beloved flock, to use his very own words, now claims his right to “boast in the Lord.”
But the big difference between Paul, who boasts in the Lord, and the braggart who boasts of himself, is about the what, the why and the wherefore of one’s boasts. The braggart speaks of himself — nothing more, nothing less and nothing else. Paul boasts about what the Lord had done for him. And the list is by no means short: he “has fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith.” The clincher is in the next line: “from now on, a merited crown awaits me; on that Day of the Lord, just judge that he is, will award it to me — and not only to me, but to all who have looked for his appearing with eager longing.”
The one who boasts in the Lord gives in to proclamation, not self-exaltation. “I will sing of your salvation” is his most likely line, his recurrent refrain. The one who boasts in the Lord is led to confession, not to self-glorification. The latter is what the scribes were wont to do — “parade around in their robes and accept marks of respect in public.”
We have a multiplicity of reasons to brag about many things. But as Paul shows us today, the only valid reason could be that of Christ the Lord, who will award “all who have looked for His appearing with eager longing.”Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
Do I engage more in self-glorification than in glorifying God who is doing a mighty work in my life?

In all things, may God be glorified Amen.

St. Adalar, pray for us.
