Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Business as Usual

“Did you not know that I must be in my father’s house?” – Luke 2:49

I have been out of “service” for 12 months. Since I had set my foot in Papua New Guinea, I had not a chance to proclaim the Good News the way I did in Manila.
I was enjoying my secular work as manager of Information Technology department of one of the country’s biggest retail chain. There was, however, a void deep inside of me. It was about my Father’s business.
When I left Manila for this job, I knew there was something I needed to do. I knew that my new workplace and the new city I will live in is my mission field. I did my best to share the Lord at every opportunity; I tried to witness for Him, even in the most difficult situations. I spoke of the Lord to my peers, fellow managers, guards, janitors and whoever I had the chance to meet. Person-to-person, one by one, sharing the Good News. I was not “ashamed of the Gospel” (Romans 1:16).
Until one day, the Lord opened up a bigger audience: I was given the task to do the teaching for the archdiocesan Catholic Charismatic Renewal weekly gatherings. After the long wait, it is now “Business as Usual.”Danny Tariman (danny@dtariman.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you ashamed of sharing the Lord to your officemates and peers?

Lord, I am sorry for the times I passed up the opportunity to share Your goodness. Empower me to witness for You!

COMPANION

1st READING

It is not for us to question God’s will. He has the power to do whatever He wants. However, He gives us the option to cooperate with His will. If we decide not to, He has to look elsewhere. In Mary, whose Immaculate Heart we celebrate today, God found a woman whose heart and mind were one with His and obedient in all things.

Isaiah 61:9-11
9 Thus says the Lord: Their descendants shall be renowned among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge them as a race the LORD has blessed. 10 I rejoice heartily in the LORD, in my God is the joy of my soul; for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation, and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels. 11 As the earth brings forth its plants, and a garden makes its growth spring up, so will the Lord GOD make justice and praise spring up before all the nations.

Psalm 113:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7
R: Blessed be the name of the Lord for ever.
1 Praise, you servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. 2 Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forever. (R) 3 From the rising to the setting of the sun is the name of the LORD to be praised. 4 High above all nations is the LORD; above the heavens is his glory. (R) 5 Who is like the LORD, our God, who is enthroned on high 6 and looks upon the heavens and the earth below? (R) 7 He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor. One of the biblical images of the heart is that it is the place where we store the good things of our lives. The problem is that we also allow regrets, resentments and hurts to dwell there. The choice is ours. Let us pray for the grace to be able to let go of all the things that hurt us and allow those that will help us to grow in love to abide and remain as the formative aspects of our hearts’ desires.

Luke 2:41-52
41 Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, 42 and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom. 43 After they had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. 44 Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances, 45 but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, 47 and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he said to them. 51 He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man.

my reflections
t h i n k : Let us pray for the grace to be able to let go of all the things that hurt us and allow those that will help us grow in love to abide and remain in our hearts.

SABBATH

PERSONS IN LOVE, NOT SEASONS OF LOVE

As I reflect on today’s liturgy, a song from the musical Rent keeps on popping in my head. “Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes… How do you measure a year? How about love? Seasons of love….”
Yesterday, we reflected on God’s boundless love shown concretely in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Human beings love to reckon everything in terms of measures, by counting minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years and seasons. We count the number of times and the repetitiveness of actions to convince ourselves of how much we are valued and loved.
But I would like to suggest that in God’s language of love, the name of the game is not frequency but intensity. And intensity is not primarily quantitative, but qualitative.
The Immaculate Heart of Mary, in tandem with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, her Son, belongs to this category of God’s intense and boundless love. And that qualitative consistency is not measured in seasons, but in persons.
The very nature of God who gradually revealed Himself in history is an illustration of this. He is Father, Creator, Giver, whose very nature is to give of Himself. He gave of Himself in His Son, the Gifted One. And the Father and the Son gave of themselves in the Spirit, the Gifting One. The Trinitarian God’s love is made concrete in the love of the Son, whose Sacred Heart is the most telling, most convincing and most palpable sign of this boundless love.
Persons, not seasons, of love is what we are speaking of here. God loves us, not once, not twice, but thrice, and enfolds us in the mantle of His Trinitarian mystery of limitless love.
The mystery continues to unfold. The love of God is once again made concrete and palpable, and this has nothing to do with seasons once again, but persons. Only this time, the same love comes to us exemplified and made available by the love of a mother, Jesus’ mother, and our mother, too. Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
Do I wait for repetitive affirmations of God’s love for me before I believe that He truly loves me?

Lord Jesus, You gave us Your own mother to be our mother, too. Thank You for Her palpable presence and protection during our most trying times as a nation.

St. Christian, pray for us.
