LETTING MY LIGHT SHINE

“Your light must shine before others.” – Matthew 5:16

When I was still in grade school, I would put money that I saved from my baon in mom’s handbag when I would hear her complain about our finances. That was one of several good things I did in my past which I never revealed to anyone.
I must have learned early in life the rule to keep my good deeds to myself. But later in life, I realized that it doesn’t always work that way.
In my assignment as a Didache writer, for instance, I can connect some verses from experiences of good things I have done. I feel I have to share these good deeds also so I can witness to others. Not to mention that we had this teaching in community that we can be guilty of “false humility” if we do not share what can be of help to others.
That is why in writing reflections, I have courage enough to talk about my good works — to let my light shine before men and bless them.Cristy Galang (cristy_cc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Have I kept to myself information that can help others?

My God, thank You for the many good things You are doing through me that shines like a light to others. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The widow has virtually nothing to give; she expects she and her son will die of starvation in the very near future. Yet along comes Elijah and asks for some of the little she has. She shares it with him and then God miraculously provides for both her and her son. It does not matter how little we have; that little portion may be all that God needs in accomplishing His plan. Let us trust that whatever He asks of us, He will make sure we are not left in want.

1 Kings 17:7-16
7 The brook near where Elijah was hiding ran dry, because no rain had fallen in the land. 8 So the LORD said to Elijah: 9 “Move on to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have designated a widow there to provide for you.” 10 He left and went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the entrance of the city, a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her, “Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink.” 11 She left to get it, and he called out after her, “Please bring along a bit of bread.” 12 “As the LORD, your God, lives,” she answered, “I have nothing baked; there is only a handful of flour in my jar and a little oil in my jug. Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks, to go in and prepare something for myself and my son; when we have eaten it, we shall die.” 13 “Do not be afraid,” Elijah said to her. “Go and do as you propose. But first make me a little cake and bring it to me. Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son. 14 For the LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when the LORD sends rain upon the earth.’ ” 15 She left and did as Elijah had said. She was able to eat for a year, and he and her son as well; 16 The jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, as the LORD had foretold through Elijah.

Psalm 4:2-3, 4-5, 7b-8
R: Lord, let your face shine on us.
1 [2] When I call, answer me, O my just God, you who relieve me when I am in distress; have pity on me, and hear my prayer! 2 [3] Men of rank, how long will you be dull of heart? Why do you love what is vain and seek after falsehood? (R) 3 [4] Know that the LORD does wonders for his faithful one; the LORD will hear me when I call upon him. 4 [5] Tremble, and sin not; reflect, upon your beds, in silence. (R) 6 [7] O LORD, let the light of your countenance shine upon us! 7 [8] You put gladness into my heart, more than when grain and wine abound. (R)

G O S P E L

Salt or any other spice is useless unless it maintains its flavor. The spiritual life is dependent on many types of flavors that we call virtues. If we do not develop them, then our spirituality will be empty and useless.

Matthew 5:13-16
13 Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. 16 Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

my reflections
I t does not matter how little we have; that little portion may be all that God needs in accomplishing His plan.

STAKING EVERYTHING ON LOVE

While I cannot presume I know the feeling, there is something about the story of the widow of Zarephath that resonates with an experience of mine — rushing to get somewhere in pre-Christmas traffic, getting caught in a jam and running almost on empty! The thought that the engine could conk out anytime can be unnerving.
But there is something about the same Old Testament story that many of us cannot presume to resonate with, at least ordinarily: the giving of the very last morsel of food, with absolutely nothing left to spare, nothing left to live on, if only for another day. A gambler who nurses his last chips, after a night of losses, can throw in all he is left with. This is squandering what one has — irresponsibly, often irreparably. A gambler is one who squanders. But the widow’s behavior is not that of one who squanders. She stakes everything she has to live on for a higher and nobler reason. We have little respect for one who throws all caution to the wind, but we reserve the highest esteem for one who stakes everything on charity.
The widow from Zarephath did this with utter selflessness, for she knew in her heart what she was before Someone sent from above. The gambler who squanders is one whom we would rather not have our children see and emulate. But the woman who gives all she has for love, or at least for generosity and concern for others, represents what the Lord speaks of as “salt” that seasons humanity. She is, by any standard, like a “lamp” that could not be “put under a bushel basket.” Many people have stocks.
While they are called investors, they are not really the ones who can be called real owners. In life, it is more important to define our stakes. The stakeholders are those who really own because they have a deep sense of responsibility over all that they hold stakes for. The widow staked everything on what was most important to her. She staked everything on love. Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
In my life, where do I put my stake on?

Lord Jesus, make my heart like that of the widow of Zarephath who staked all that she has on love on You.

St. Bron, pray for us.
