blessings for all

“… for he makes his sun to rise on bad and good…” – Matthew 5:45

Have you noticed how that lazy, stubborn, good-for-nothing bum breathes the same air that you breathe — for free?
Do you see how that loudmouth, backstabbing, slandering neighbor or classmate or officemate of yours get warmed by the same sun and showered by the same rain?
Observe how all people are blessed by God every day. Why? Because God loves them all. God loves us all.
But here’s the catch.
Notice how loving, generous, forgiving, grateful, peaceful, prayerful and happy people seem to get “more of God’s blessings”? It’s because they are the ones who are more open to receive them.
But realize that God never stops blessing those who are seemingly “closed” to these blessings. Grace, mercy, healing, miracles are there for the taking — anytime — if they open themselves to God. In fact, many of God’s supply — like the air, the sun, the rain — just keep on coming. And only fools will close themselves to these. Which means God does not stop loving them.
Now why should you give up on them… or give up on yourself?Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Have you judged others as hopeless? Have you thought of yourself as hopeless? Look around. Look up. God never gives up on others… and on you.

Lord, let me see Your deep and unending love for all of us so that I, too, may have the same love for You, for others, and for myself. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The punishment given to Ahab and Jezebel is truly horrible. Perhaps we should see this as warning before we sin again. The results of sin are also horrible and the world would be a much better place if we all avoided sin altogether. I challenge all to do what we can to avoid all sin in the future, by the grace of God of course.

1 Kings 21:17-29
17 After the death of Naboth the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite: 18 “Start down to meet Ahab, king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He will be in the vineyard of Naboth, of which he has come to take possession. 19 This is what you shall tell him, ‘The LORD says: After murdering, do you also take possession? For this, the LORD says: In the place where the dogs licked up the blood of Naboth, the dogs shall lick up your blood, too.’” 20 “Have you found me out, my enemy?” Ahab said to Elijah. “Yes,” he answered. “Because you have given yourself up to doing evil in the LORD’S sight, 21 I am bringing evil upon you I will destroy you and will cut off every male in Ahab’s line, whether slave or freeman, in Israel. 22 I will make your house like that of Jeroboam, son of Nebat, and like that of Baasha, son of Ahijah, because of how you have provoked me by leading Israel into sin.” 23 (Against Jezebel, too, the LORD declared, “The dogs shall devour Jezebel in the district of Jezreel.”) 24 “When one of Ahab’s line dies in the city, dogs will devour him; when one of them dies in the field, the birds of the sky will devour him.” 25 Indeed, no one gave himself up to the doing of evil in the sight of the LORD as did Ahab, urged on by his wife Jezebel. 26 He became completely abominable by following idols, just as the Amorites had done, whom the LORD drove out before the Israelites. 27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his garments and put on sackcloth over his bare flesh. He fasted, slept in the sackcloth, and went about subdued. 28 Then the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, 29 “Have you seen that Ahab has humbled himself before me? Since he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his time. I will bring the evil upon his house during the reign of his son.”

Psalm 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 11, 16
R: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.
1 [3] Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense. 2 [4] Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me. (R) 3 [5] For I acknowledge my offense, and my sin is before me always. 4 [6] “Against you only have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight.” (R) 9 [11] Turn away your face from my sins, and blot out all my guilt. 14 [16] Free me from blood guilt, O God, my saving God; then my tongue shall revel in your justice. (R)

G O S P E L

Yes, we are called to perfection. That is some call, I know, but it is a sign that God holds us in high esteem to be worthy of such a calling. St. Basil tells us that our dignity as human beings is rooted in the call to become like God, that is, in union with Him. If this is our calling, then it is obvious that perfection is a part of it. We may never achieve it fully here on earth, but it is worth striving for!

Matthew 5:43-48
43 Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you  may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same? 48 So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

SABBATH

OUR MORAL RESPONSIBILITY

The continuation of the reading from the first book of Kings strikes us as eerily close to our experience. Who among us has not done evil in God’s sight? Who among us has not been confronted by our own consciences after we have done something out of kilter with God’s loving will? Ahab was confronted by Elijah and was therefore conscience-stricken. The dastardly deed was about to cost him and Jezebel very dearly, and the thought brought them to repentance.
Sin and repentance are two of the so-called convergent themes of the Bible. This means that the stories we read in the Bible revolve around just a few of them. It does not need much for us to realize that the story of our lives also revolve around such basic themes as sin and grace, fall and redemption, or  covenant and disobedience.
Let us face it. We all have that Ahab and Jezebel streak in us. St. Paul tells us that “all men have fallen short of the glory of God.” We are all part of what St. Augustine calls “massa damnata” (sinful humanity). The liturgy calls us to a deeper level of awareness, one that is both real and experiential. That deeper level of awareness starts out with the acknowledgment of a moral truth, as indeed, we declare today: “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.”
There is a lot of sinfulness afoot. Apart from our personal sins, we sin as a people, as a nation, as a community. We sin by helping destroy the earth which is our only home, by our lack of concern for its natural resources. We sin by allowing ourselves to be caught up in the cycle of indifference and lack of social responsibility. We sin by allowing ourselves to be governed by inept and corrupt leaders, and by allowing ourselves to be manipulated by their empty boasts and promises. Our acknowledgment comes now with a responsibility: “Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

Reflection Question:
How have I contributed to the sins of my society, of my nation, of my community?

Forgive me, Lord, for my social sins. Help me to do my part in building up a just and moral society.

St. Alice, pray for us.
