EVERYDAY MASS, EVERYDAY SUCCESS

Be eager to present yourself acceptable to God, a workman who causes no disgrace. – 2 Timothy 2:15

“Do I hear right that you go to church every day?” quipped my boss during a get-together. “Yes, I do.” I answered hesitantly, wondering how he got the information. I told him that I need it for my work; it’s where I get my strength, my wisdom, my guidance and my protection.
As an IT manager overseas, there are lots of challenges that try my patience, wisdom and focus. It can be wearisome without the Lord in my life.
But more than my need for Him, it’s my deep longing for God and my love for Him that drives me to seek Him each day. The Gospel reading today says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30).
As I present myself to Him daily at Mass, I receive His guidance that brings me success in my workplace.Danny Tariman (danny@dtariman.com)

REFLECTION:
Do you have a difficult task in your workplace? Try seeking the Lord in the Eucharist.

Thank You, Lord, for Your guidance. You are my Wisdom. You are my Strength.

COMPANION

1st READING

God has demonstrated His faithfulness to His people over the past millennia; it is now our turn to demonstrate our faithfulness and perseverance in doing His will. Surely God will always be with us — but will we always stay close to God? Faithfulness does not just happen. It is a result of the decisions we make. We need to choose God over and above what the world offers us over and over again.

2 Timothy 2:8-15
8 Beloved: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my Gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. 11 This saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him we shall also live with him; 12 if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. 14 Remind people of these things and charge them before God to stop disputing about words. This serves no useful purpose since it harms those who listen. 15 Be eager to present yourself as acceptable to God, a workman who causes no disgrace, imparting the word of truth without deviation.

P S A L M

Psalm 25:4-5ab, 8-9, 10, 14
R: Teach me your ways, O Lord.
4 Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths, 5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. (R) 8 Good and upright is the LORD; thus he shows sinners the way. 9 He guides the humble to justice, he teaches the humble his way. (R) 10 All the paths of the LORD are kindness and constancy toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees. 14 The friendship of the LORD is with those who fear him, and his covenant, for their instruction. (R)

G O S P E L

The first three commandments tell us how to love God. The latter seven instruct us how to deal with our neighbor. Perhaps this distribution tells us that we are going to struggle more with loving our neighbor than God. Makes sense to me as I have a lot more neighbors than gods in my life.

Mark 12:28-34
28 One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” 29 Jesus replied, “The first is this: ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! 30 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, ‘He is One and there is no other than he.’ 33 And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

my reflections
think: Faithfulness does not just happen; it is a result of the decisions we make.

SABBATH

A REMINDER TO LOVE

I had an aunt who badgered us with endless reminders all the time. In the few times I visited her in Canada many years ago, she would pepper me with repetitive reminders days before I set back for home. Though I resented her then, I must admit that those reminders eventually worked. Indeed, as the scholastics used to say, “repetitio mater studiorum” (repetition is the mother of learning).
The readings today smack of repetition, reminders and rejoinders. In the same “farewell” letter of Paul to Timothy that we started reflecting on yesterday, the opening line starts with — you guessed it right — “remember…” And the solicitous Paul, seemingly unsatisfied with a simple reminder, insists that Timothy do the same: “Keep reminding people of these things and charge them before God to stop disputing about mere words.”  The response after the first reading actually offers a rejoinder to the solicitous reminder from Paul — a prayer that “reminds” God, as it were, to keep on “teaching us, His ways.”
The Gospel speaks of something not altogether unrelated to the same motif. Echoing what the people of Israel were told in the Old Testament, the Lord reminds us now about exactly how He can teach us His ways. “Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone!” It is for no other reason than this that the Jews traditionally recite this prayer, called the Shema, several times in the course of a day.
We are a people with such short memories. We forget events all too easily. Thank God, we have, as a community of believers, a privileged moment to bask in glorious memory. We call it liturgy, the official worship that the Church offers to God. In the liturgy, however, we do more than just hone our memory skills. We don’t just remember — we do and celebrate a memorial. And biblical memorial is something that actualizes, makes present and real —albeit in a sacramental way — what we celebrate. And what do we celebrate? God’s love and the reminder for us to love Him in return. Fr. Chito Dimaranan,
SDB
Reflection Question:
How do I remind myself of God’s love for me and His presence in my life every day?

May I always remember, Lord Jesus, that You died on the Cross because of Your great love for me. Help me to remember to love You in return by living a life that’s pleasing to You.

St. Kevin, pray for us.
