what’s your card?

“My friend, come up higher...” – Luke 14:10

I was stuck in traffic when a big SUV hit my puny car. The driver of the SUV dismissed the damage I got and instead pulled out his business card saying, “I’m a lawyer.” I think he meant to intimidate me, so I handed him my own business card. Only then did he start talking to me with respect.

People usually give lawyers special treatment (and some lawyers expect it). This is why I’m not comfortable letting strangers know that I’m a lawyer, unless it’s necessary.

I also tried to pull my lawyer card (after shameless girlish pleading) to convince a traffic enforcer to let me off with a warning instead of writing me a ticket. The traffic enforcer would not budge but offered an alternative: that I pay my way out of the ticket. Bribery would be a lot more convenient and a lot less expensive, but I immediately handed my license and asked for a ticket instead.

You see, I have another card: my “Child of God” card. This one may sometimes be harder to carry, but it is definitely more impressive and worth keeping more than my business card. Pepper Bruce (pepper.bruce@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:

“God makes three requests of his children: Do the best you can, where you are, with what you have, now.” (African American proverb)

Lord, please help us remember that being Your child is the highest honor, and that we should always live up to that honor.

COMPANION

1st READING

St. Paul is reflecting on the reality that many of the Jewish people did not accept that Jesus was the coming Messiah. Why was this so? St. Paul sees that it was in part to allow the non-Jews, the Gentiles, to come into the Kingdom and only when the full measure of the Gentiles had entered would the Jews come to faith. This event will usher in the coming of Christ in His glory and the resurrection of the dead.

Romans 11:1-2, 11-12, 25-29

1 Brothers and sisters: I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Of course not! For I too am a child of Israel, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? 11 Hence I ask, did they stumble so as to fall? Of course not! But through their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make them jealous. 12 Now if their transgression is enrichment for the world, and if their diminished number is enrichment for the Gentiles, how much more their full number. 25 I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you will not become wise in your own estimation: a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of the Gentiles comes in, 26 and thus all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The deliverer will come out of Zion, he will turn away godlessness from Jacob; 27 and this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.” 28 In respect to the gospel, they are enemies on your account; but in respect to election, they are beloved because of the patriarchs. 29 For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.

Psalms 94:12-13, 14-15, 17-18

R: The Lord will not abandon his people.

12 Blessed the man whom you instruct, O LORD, whom by your law you teach, 13 giving him rest from evil days. (R) 14 For the LORD will not cast off his people, nor abandon his inheritance; 15 but judgment shall again be with justice, and all the upright of heart shall follow it. (R) 17 Were not the LORD my help, I would soon dwell in the silent grave. 18 When I say, “My foot is slipping,” your kindness, O LORD, sustains me. (R)

Jesus used the occasion of a meal at a leading Pharisee’s house to teach a spiritual principle to those present. He noticed how they all wanted to sit in the most prestigious places at the table. Jesus says that we should not seek to exalt ourselves, but be humble and allow God to exalt us if He so chooses. We can so easily become proud if we are exalted that it is better to be humble and hidden, then we will be sure to receive the reward that God wants to give us.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.

R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 14:1, 7-11

1 On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. 7 He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, 9 and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place. 10 Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at  the table. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

SABBATH

A Lesson in Humility

Did Jesus exaggerate with His parable? I think not. It reminds me of a fiesta in our parish a long time ago. After the solemn Mass, the late Cardinal Sin went to the parish hall for the well-prepared snack. He, the priests, and the parish council president and members were seated at the presidential table. One seat was still empty and suddenly an elderly man came in, saw the empty seat, went there and sat down. When the person who was supposed to sit there arrived, the uninvited guest had to be asked to please vacate the seat.

Yes, it happens. In the case of our fiesta it was surely lack of sensitivity or common sense by the man. But in the meal Jesus attended, He seems to give us a lesson in humility.

Humility! A virtue lacking so much in today’s macho society. Who wants to be humble? Because humility is often interpreted as weakness and cowardice.

What then is this humility that Jesus wants us to acquire?

St. Bernard defines humility as “a virtue by which a person knows himself as he truly is, lowers himself. Jesus Christ is the ultimate definition of humility.”

St. Thomas Aquinas, the great 13th century philosopher and theologian, defines humility similarly as “the virtue of humility that consists in keeping oneself within one’s own bounds, not reaching out to things above one, but submitting to one’s superior.”

“True humility” is distinctly different from “false humility,” which consists of denigrating one’s own sanctity, gifts, talents and accomplishments for the sake of receiving praise from others. In this context, legitimate humility consists of the following behaviors and attitudes:
Submitting oneself to God and His legitimate authority; recognizing virtues and talents that others have, particularly those which outshine one’s own, and giving due honor recognizing the limits of one’s talents, abilities or authority, and not reaching for what is beyond one’s grasp.

To be really humble needs a lot of courage and strength. It’s far from weakness! Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:

What do I think about being humble? Do I tend to brag and think of myself better than others?

Lord, You said that You are “meek and humble of heart.” I have only to look at You and try to imitate You in order to become humble. Lord, give me the strength to do it.

St. Bond, pray for us.
