GOD-SENT

“Ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” – Luke 11:9

I was then already enrolled as a junior student in high school but my fees were just partially paid. Life was hard and I had just lost my scholarship. I applied as a student aide and prayed hard to be accepted.
But I was not. My sister was already an aide then and the school was not allowing siblings to both work as student aides. I prayed for reconsideration since I was a person with disability.
Still, rules were rules.
Just when I was about to lose hope, my Journalism teacher, Mrs. Teodoro, came to the rescue. Aside from being one of her students who disliked Journalism, I didn’t know Mrs. Teodoro and vice versa. But when she learned about my case, she decided that she would shoulder my tuition fees without demanding any work from me in return, not even to check test papers. he was truly God-sent, the answer to my prayers.
Indeed, ask and we shall receive. It may not be how we want it or when we want it. But for sure it’s for the greater good that only God knows. Edgardo Tulabut (ylnoseye@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you about to lose hope? Don’t! Just hold on to your faith. God answers prayers in His own time and way.

We thank You, Father, for opening Your doors and answering our calls, not because of our persistence but because of Your great love for us!

COMPANION

1st READING

Malachi laments that it is often the evil who prosper and appear blessed while the righteous suffer. Satan is the lord of this earthly realm and he rewards his servants with earthy riches, yet it is with a huge price — their eternal soul. Let us not lose sight of the infinitely great reward that God has for us in heaven, which will make all the riches of this world seem like so much rubbish in comparison.

Malachi 3:13-20
13 You have defied me in word, says the LORD, yet you ask, “What have we spoken against you?” 14 You have said, “It is vain to serve God, and what do we profit by keeping his command, and going about in penitential dress in awe of the LORD of hosts? 15 Rather must we call the proud blessed; for indeed evildoers prosper, and even tempt God with impunity.” 16 Then they who fear the LORD spoke with one another, and the LORD listened attentively; and a record book was written before him of those who fear the LORD and trust in his name. 17 And they shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, my own special possession, on the day I take action. And I will have compassion on them, as a man has compassion on his son who serves him. 18 Then you will again see the distinction between the just and the wicked; between him who serves God, and him who does not serve him. 19 For lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire, leaving them neither root nor branch, says the LORD of hosts. 20 But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays.

Psalms 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6
R: Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
1 Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, 2 but delights in the law of the LORD and meditates on his law day and night. (R) 3 He is like a tree planted near running water, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves never fade. Whatever he does, prospers. (R) 4 Not so the wicked, not so; they are like chaff which the wind drives away. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes. (R)

In this teaching, Jesus compares the reluctance of a friend to get up in the night to give some food for an unexpected guest with the willingness of our Heavenly Father to give us our needs. God, being the perfection of fatherhood, will always give us the very best gifts but always with the intent that we grow in likeness of His Son. What we need to do is persevere in prayer as Monica did in praying for 30 years for Augustine’s conversion.
Daniel 4-6
ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the words of your Son.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 11:5-13
5 Jesus said to his disciples: “Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,’ 7 and he says in reply from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. 9 And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened  to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? 12 Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? 13 If you then, who are wicked, know
how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

my reflections
think: Let us not lose sight of the infinitely great reward that God has for us in heaven, which will make all the riches of this world seem like so much rubbish in comparison.

SABBATH

Do I ask enough from God?

Probably you are puzzled by this question. Good if you are. Then you will read today’s Gospel passage and reflect with me about what Jesus is telling us.
Quite often, I read explanations of today’s parable about the friend knocking at midnight; I even heard (and delivered) homilies about it, but when I started writing this reflection something struck me. Most explanations say that perseverance in prayer is what Jesus stresses. Maybe they are right. But the second part of Jesus’ words, His  application, does not focus on perseverance but on something else. Actually, Jesus gives His audience — and us — a lesson that focuses on the assurance that God will hear our prayers, whether we are persistent or not.
You may say that from experience, God did not always give you what you asked for. I think there are two hints in the words of Jesus that answer disappointing experiences in prayer.
The first is, Jesus says that a father gives always what is good for His children. How do we know that what we are praying for is really good for us or for the person we are praying for? We think it is good, but God looks beyond our limited knowledge; He looks into the future and knows whether it is beneficial to grant or not.
Another point Jesus indicates is that we might not ask enough from God. Sounds strange but that’s what Jesus indicates. While human fathers want to give what is good for their children, the heavenly Father wants to give the Holy Spirit; He wants to give Himself!
A friend of mine texted me several months ago the striking sentence, “You will never ask God the hundredth part of what He wants to give you.”
This statement underlines beautifully what Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel passage. Jesus wants us to realize that His Father loves incredibly because He is Love, and that we are His beloved children for whom He is ready to give and give and give — if only we ask for it.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Do I dare to ask God to give Himself to me? Do I trust enough in God’s limitless love?

Lord, I realize that I am not bold enough when I pray. And I also realize that quite often, I pray that God should give me what I think is good for me. I have to learn to be more trusting in You and my heavenly Father.

St. Faith, pray for us.
