| | HAKUNA MATATA! “Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.” – Luke 12:7 In my faith journey, I have learned to chant this famous Disney phrase in my head when worries build up inside me. As the song explains, “Hakuna matata” means no worries. This simple phrase does wonders in changing my frame of mind. Each time I say it, though, I add more to it. When monthly bills start coming in just when I am short on cash, I say, “Hakuna matata… God will provide.” When I’m on a major crossroad and can’t decide which way to go, I say, “Hakuna matata… God will lead the way.” And even in trivial matters, say, being caught in a traffic jam, I say, “Hakuna matata… God will open up the roads for me.” And guess what? It always works! Because I call on God’s powerful name, and believe that whatever I ask of Him will be granted if it is good for me. Jesus tells us that we are worth more than many sparrows, so keep the worries away. God knows what we need even before we ask. | | COMPANION | 1st READING Abraham is our father in faith and the model of faith to all! He entrusted his life to God. God did not disappoint him, nor will He us, if we make the choice to place our trust and hope in His promises to us. We may not always understand what God is doing in regard to these promises, but we can be sure that He will be faithful to them as His word is true. Romans 4:1-8 1 Brothers and sisters: What can we say that Abraham found, our ancestor according to the flesh? 2 Indeed, if Abraham was justified on the basis of his works, he has reason to boast; but this was not so in the sight of God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 4 A worker’s wage is credited not as a gift, but as something due. 5 But when one does not work, yet believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness. 6 So also David declares the blessedness of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not record.” P S A L M Psalms 32:1-2, 5, 11 R: I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation. 1 Blessed is he whose fault is taken away, whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes not guilt, in whose spirit there is no guile. (R) 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you, my guilt I covered not. I said, “I confess my faults to the LORD,” and you took away the guilt of my sin. (R) 11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you just; exult, all you upright of heart. (R) G O S P E L There is nothing that we do or say that the Lord does not see. It is impossible to hide anything from Him. We also know that He continues to love us despite the sins that we commit. Therefore, it does not make sense to hide from Him out of shame for our sins. Let us be committed to live in the light of the Holy Spirit and thus begin to experience the power of God to change our lives. Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples, “Beware of the leaven — that is, the hypocrisy — of the Pharisees. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. 4 I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. 5 I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. 7 Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. | | SABBATH | Some things are worth dying for A Newsweek issue from the 1990s published a horrible story about a married couple in Canada who kidnapped, tortured, raped and sometimes murdered teenage girls. They even videotaped their victims’ agony. And so we learned about 15- year-old Kirsten French. She was ordered to perform a certain sex act but she refused, saying, “Some things are worth dying for.” She never gave in, even when the couple showed her a video of one of their victims. Ninoy Aquino said something similar. His motive was love for his country. We also remember the death of John the Baptist who also dared to tell the powerful ruler that he was wrong by marrying his half-brother’s wife. He died for the truth. These three examples embody that kind of strength, self-determination and self-respect that we can only admire, because at the bottom of it is a sense of honor and the readiness to die to preserve that honor. In other words, John the Baptist, Kirsten French and Ninoy Aquino are telling us that there are values which one should not compromise. There are values which we, as followers of Christ, have to stand up and even be ready to suffer for. But isn’t their standing up for truth, for chastity, for the nation outdated in our secularized and sex-obsessed world? Here comes Jesus telling us in today’s Gospel, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body…” One problem that weakens our society and even the Church is that too many don’t have the backbone to stand up for truth, purity and other Christian values. As that weakens our nation, it is also weakening the Church. “Some things are worth dying for.” May these words give us strength to be more courageous in a world where chastity is laughed at, where the truth is twisted, where faith and loyalty to the teachings of Christ and of the Church are often undermined by secular ideas andtrends.
