WHO WINS?

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. – Romans 8:13

On a vacation, a family went to visit a US Navy submarine upon the prompting of their eight-year-old son. The boy had long wanted to see the inside of a real submarine. When they entered the exhibit grounds, they had to pay the entrance fee. The mom, to save a few bucks, passed off her son to be younger than his real age. The boy corrected his mom but she hushed him.

When they got to the entrance of the submarine, only kids eight years and older were allowed to enter. And because the mom had lied about her son’s age, he was not allowed to get in. The boy bawled at not being able to see what he came for in the first place. He couldn’t stop blaming his mom for the incident.

Sometimes we think we get ahead when we dupe others. But in truth, who do we really cheat? We end up as the

losers because we shortchange ourselves — selling our integrity for a few bucks.

Jesus said, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

How wonderful it is to live a life of freedom! Rissa Singson-Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:

COMPANION

1st READING

The Holy Spirit dwelling in our hearts makes us aware that we are sons of God. It is the Spirit that prays in us with groanings and according to the will of God. This is a great and wonderful gift that we should always treasure. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to work more and more in us, bringing us deeper and deeper into the life of Christ.

Romans 8:12-17

12 Brothers and sisters: We are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, “Abba, Father!” 16 The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Psalms 68:2, 4, 6-7, 20-21

R: Our God is the God of salvation.

1 [2] God arises; his enemies are scattered, and those who hate him flee before him. 3 [4] But the just rejoice and exult before God; they are glad and rejoice. (R) 5 [6] The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. 6 [7] God gives a home to the forsaken; he leads forth prisoners to prosperity. (R) 19 [20] Blessed day by day be the Lord, who bears our burdens; God, who is our salvation. 20 [21] God is a saving God for us; the LORD, my Lord, controls the passageways of

death. (R)

The Pharisees were very strict as to what people could do or not do on the Sabbath, their day of rest. One thing forbidden was working on the Sabbath. Yet Jesus used the Sabbath to heal the sick and to set the captives free. He did not consider doing this as breaking the Sabbath. For Jesus, the law was meant for man’s good and not to imprison him in legalism.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Your word, O Lord, is truth; consecrate us in the truth.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 13:10-17

10 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath. 11 And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, “Woman, you are set free of your infirmity.” 13 He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God. 14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath, said to the crowd in reply, “There are six days when work should be done. Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day.” 15 The Lord said to him in reply, “Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger and lead it out for watering? 16 This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day from this bondage?” 17 When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.

SABBATH

Masks are for Carnival only

Jesus is angry in today’s Gospel. Rightly so. What He faces in the synagogue is illogical and hypocrisy. But it goes on until today. One day I walked on a Sabbath through Mea Shearim, the ultra-orthodox quarter in Jerusalem. When I came to a major road, I saw many Orthodox Jews standing along the road, cursing the cars passing by with loud voices and angry faces. Why? To start and drive a car is forbidden on a Sabbath. And so they “celebrate” the holy day of Sabbath, supposedly a day of praising God, by cursing people.

Hypocrisy, we exclaim. But are we better? How many of our Christian fellowmen are wearing a pious mask by   attending daily Mass but destroying the reputation of a neighbor by their gossip? How many lament the poverty of many Filipinos but own two, three luxury cars, eat in posh restaurants and “fatten” their bank accounts?

How much money was used by “Christian” politicians for commercials during last year’s election campaign while oo many of their countrymen were hungry, suffering and even dying because they could not afford a hospital? The list of Christian hypocrisy and Christian masks is endless.

Even in the Church, sad to say, we discover hypocrisy. There are priests who accumulate wealth, who are supposed to be celibate but have a woman and even children! We were shocked in recent years by revelations of sex scandals in many parts of the Church. So many pious masks are hiding the real person.

We understand Jesus’ anger in the synagogue, but it would be good to ask: What would Jesus say if He came here right now — in my parish, in my family? What would He say when He sees my lifestyle, my words and actions (or lack of

them)? Which mask would He rip from my face?

Hard as it is, it would be good to ask ourselves these questions. The answers may help us to become more honest — for masks are for carnivals only. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:

Do I wear a mask to hide my ugly self? Do I pretend to be better than I am?

Lord, You have hit not only the people in the synagogue; You have hit me, too. I also wear a mask to hide my real self. Give me the strength and courage to be honest, to show my real face or to change to become what You want me to be.

St. Joseph Thi, pray for us.
