winning the battle

“I am the Lord; there is no other god. I will give you the strength you need, although you do not know me.” – Isaiah 45:5

GP was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2005.
He was a young professional, single and living a worry-free life at that time. Everything was on the right track until he got the bad news from his doctor.
The news did not shock him. GP knew the fatal consequences of his illness. He did not have the financial resources to fight this battle. He also did not want his mother to know about his condition because of her heart condition.
But he was not afraid because he knew one thing. He knew that God will give him the strength for the battle. And God did not fail him. Through his friends in community, he was able to find the right doctor. His friends worked together to help him raise the funds for the procedure.
He underwent operation and was declared cancer-free seven months later. GP is now married and has a son. His battle cry is “whatever does not kill you will make you stronger.” Truly God has given him the strength to win the battle with cancer!  Alvin Fabella (alvinfabella@yahoo.com)

Lord, I am facing a lot of battles in various aspects of my life. I recognize my weakness and I pray to You, give me the strength to win over these battles. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

Through the Prophet Isaiah, God tells King Cyrus that it is He who has raised him up to serve Him even though Cyrus does not know or worship God. Here, we see how God is truly Almighty. He uses even pagan kings to fulfil His purposes. Ultimately, all that God wills will be realized and nothing can thwart His plans. This should fill us with a great sense of confidence and hope.

Isaiah 45:1, 4-6
1 Thus says the LORD to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp, subduing nations before him, and making kings run in his service, opening doors before him and leaving the gates unbarred: 4 For the sake of Jacob, my servant, of Israel my chosen one, I have called you by your name, giving you a title, though you knew me not. 5 I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not, 6 so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun men may know that there is none besides me. I am the LORD, there is no other.

P S A L M
Psalms 96:1, 3, 4-5, 7-8, 9-10
R: Give the Lord glory and honor.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands. 3 Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. (R) 4 For great is the LORD and highly to be praised; awesome is he, beyond all gods. 5 For all the gods of the nations are things of nought, but the LORD made the heavens. (R) 7 Give to the LORD, you families of nations, give to the LORD glory and praise; 8 give to the LORD the glory due his name! Bring gifts, and enter his courts. (R) 9 Worship the LORD in holy attire. Tremble before him, all the earth; 10 say among the nations: The LORD is king, he governs the peoples with equity. (R)

2nd READING

Paul recounts how the Gospel came to the Thessalonians. It came, he said, not just in word but in power. As St. Paul also told the Romans, the Gospel is the power of God for our salvation. Since the resurrection power of Christ is available to us, let us allow this wonderful grace and power to fill our lives and hearts.

1 Thessalonians 1:1-5
1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace. 2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly 3 calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father, 4 knowing, brothers and sisters loved by God, how you were chosen. 5 For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction.

G O S P E L

The Pharisees hate Jesus so much that they even side with their worst enemies, the Herodians, to try to trap Jesus. They attempt to make Jesus choose between serving the Romans who were their conquerors, or being loyal to His own people. Jesus sees right through their scheme and with wisdom, which reveals His Divinity, He totally confounds them. Jesus has also promised us the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to assist us when others try to trap us.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Shine like lights in the world as you hold on to the word of life.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Matthew 22:15-21
15 The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap him in speech. 16 They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion, for you do not regard a person’s status. 17 Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” 18 Knowing their malice, Jesus said, “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin that pays the census tax.” Then they handed him the Roman coin. 20 He said to them, “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” 21 They replied, “Caesar’s.” At that he said to them, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

SABBATH

State versus Church? No!

Again and again, the question of separation between Church and State arises and leads often to heated discussions. Today’s Gospel passage does not deal directly with this problem. Those who approached Jesus wanted to trap Him. If He says “yes, you have to pay taxes to Caesar,” they would accuse Him of being a friend of the Roman oppressing power. If He would say “no,” they would go to the Roman authorities and denounce Him as a rebel who opposes them. Jesus could not be trapped. In turn, He trapped the Pharisees and Herodians by asking them for a coin. Obviously, He did not carry a Roman coin in His pocket — but they did. To carry a coin with an image was strictly forbidden for the Jews! When they answered Him that the emperor’s image was on the coin, He reminded them that the coin belongs to the emperor and they have to give it back to him. And since they are created in “the image and likeness of God,” carrying the image of God in them, they are supposed to give themselves to God to whom they belong.
Jesus avoids giving rules; He only lays down principles. And that is why His words are timeless. In effect, He says: Every Christian has a double citizenship. He is a citizen of the country in which he lives. And to his country, the Christian owes many things, such as public service. Therefore, a Christian is bound to support the state. But the Christian is also a citizen of the Kingdom of God, meaning he owes much to God and therefore is bound to render to God what is God’s. We were baptized and became children of God; we have received countless graces and blessings from God and in gratitude we have to “pay back” to God.
Of course, there are at times conflicts between the demands of God and of the State. To this problem Jesus does not give an answer. A well-informed conscience will tell us when we have to pay our duty to God and when to the State. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
How do I discern what is right to do when state and religion seem to clash?

Lord, it is often not easy to have a double citizenship. Too often the trends in the state contradict the values You preached and gave us. Send the Holy Spirit to help me form a conscience that is attuned to You and to do what is right in Your eyes.

St. Maxima, pray for us.
