CRABS

“But some of the people said, ‘It is Beelzebul, the chief of the demons, who gives him the power to drive them out.” – Luke 11: 15

Isn’t it hilarious how people with “crab mentality” will think of anything to destroy you? Take my task, for example, as the Light of Jesus Family Feast builder and main preacher in Marilao, Bulacan, assigned by no less than Bo Sanchez and the community elders. When we started our official Feast gatherings, my share of “crab people” remarked, “How will they fill  up that venue? Where will they get the funds? What does that preacher know about these things?”
Today, close to a thousand people gather every Saturday to worship, receive healing and listen to the Word at SM Marilao Cinema 2. We now have two sessions and upcoming youth and children’s sessions (as of this writing). So, you think those “crabs” will now stop bickering? Now they say, “Oh, but their presentations are too theatrical! Their band is too loud… and they have long hair… starting with their preacher!”
I just take consolation in the thought that even Jesus Himself had His taste of “crabs.” Imagine, the Son of God being charged as the chief of demons! Pitiful, what “crabs” would do just to pull others down and draw attention to themselves! Alvin Barcelona (kpreacheralvin@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
You know what to do with crabs? You pray for them before you cook and eat them.

Dear God, grant me the grace to rejoice in the success of others and to pray for those who persecute me. In Your Most Holy Name. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The rosary is one of the special prayers passed down in the Church since the 12th century and is a wonderful way to meditate on the mysteries of Christ’s life, in the company of the Virgin Mary, His and our mother. Who can better reveal to us the mysteries and wonder of the life and person of her Son than His own mother? I often use the time of waiting in line to be served or while traveling to pray the rosary.

Joel 1:13-15; 2:1-2
13 Gird yourselves and weep, O priests! Wail, O ministers of the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God! The house of your God is deprived of offering and libation. 14 Proclaim a fast, call an assembly; gather the elders, all who dwell in the land, into the house of the LORD, your God, and cry to the LORD! 15 Alas, the day! For near is the day of the LORD, and it comes as ruin from the Almighty. 2: 1 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all who dwell in the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming; 2 yes, it is near, a day of darkness and of gloom, a day of clouds and somberness! Like dawn spreading over the mountains, a people numerous and mighty! Their like has not been from of old, nor will it be after them, even to the years of distant generations.

Psalms 9:2-3, 6, 16, 8-9
R: The Lord will judge the world with justice.
1 [2] I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart; I will declare all your wondrous deeds. 2 [3] I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, Most High. (R) 5 [6] You rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked; their name you blotted out forever and ever. 15 [16] The nations are sunk in the pit they have made; in the snare they set, their foot is caught. (R) 7 [8] But the LORD sits enthroned forever; he has set up his throne for judgment. 8 [9] He judges the world with justice; he governs the peoples with equity. (R)

There have been many promises and indulgences attached to the prayerful recitation of the rosary. It is important that we do not rattle off the prayers but pray them slowly and reverently. The aim of the repetitive prayers is to occupy our overactive minds so that our hearts can focus on the mysteries. Pope John XXII had a great devotion to praying the rosary and would take great care to say it slowly and reverently. He often became distracted as we do. Still he did not give up, but persevered.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
The prince of this world will now be cast out, and when I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all to myself, says the Lord.
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Luke 11:15-26
15 When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said: “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” 16 Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. 17 But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. 18 And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. 19 If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. 22 But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 24 When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it roams through arid regions searching for rest but, finding none, it says, ‘I shall return to my home from which I came.’ 25 But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself who move in and dwell there, and the last condition of that person is worse than the first.”

SABBATH

The Cleansed House and the Devil

Scary, sensational movies about satanic possessions and exorcisms attract crowds. But reactions to possession vary. One extreme is that people see the devil everywhere and claim possession even when a person is just psychologically ill. On the other extreme, some people do not believe in the devil at all, calling it an ancient or medieval superstition. But a Catholic university in Rome introduced some time ago a course in demonology, and every diocese is supposed to have an exorcist, duly appointed by the bishop. That shows that the Church takes the devil seriously!
Evil is a reality. And evil forces can be seen at work everywhere: in our personal lives, in national politics and on our TV’s international news. The devil, of course, does not appear with horns, goat feet, tail and pitchfork as our ancestors imagined  Satan. No, the devil is too clever for that. First, he tries to make people believe that he does not exist, and secondly he appears, as St. Paul already wrote, as “an angel of light” to deceive us. A sweet-speaking politician who advocates abortion or contraceptives might be used by the devil to do his job of leading people astray.
Towards the end, Jesus makes an important point when He speaks about the cleansed house. It is not enough to have one’s sins forgiven and to renounce evil. A cleansed and empty soul is only the first step towards overcoming evil. The empty soul has to be filled with good works, with prayers, with love for God and neighbor so that the evil One will not be able to enter anymore.
Here might be the reason for the frustrating experience of many: After a good confession, promising “not to sin again,” they have to confess the very same sins again and again and again. A confession, a cleansing of the soul, will be successful only when we begin immediately afterwards to do something good to others and not give up in our effort to fill the soul with deeds that are pleasing to God. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Am I aware that having my soul cleansed is not enough but that I should fill the void with good works?

Lord, so often You have me cleansed from my sins but I have done again what is evil. Thank You for reminding me that I have to be more active in resisting and avoiding the snares of the devil by doing good deeds.

St. Sergius, pray for us.
