NEW POLLUTION

Waiting to catch him in something he might say. – Luke 11:54

One presidential candidate who rides on the “preserve the nature” platform in the campaign trail declared his total war against pollution. Unknown to him, he is a major contributor to another form of devastating pollution: verbal pollution.
One popular Christian author writes, “The verbal pollution passed around by grumblers, complainers, criticizers and pessimists are poison that creates an atmosphere of wholesale negativism where nothing but the bad side of everything is emphasized.”
A group of Christian friends became concerned about this form of pollution and their personal part in it. So they made a pact to avoid critical words for a whole week. They were surprised to find how little they spoke! They learned that they needed to overhaul their entire heart-to-mouth system. Verbal pollutant carriers don’t go too far in the direction of a joy-filled life.
The Pharisees and their cohorts caught Jesus because He was saying “different” things — stuff that was beautiful, joyful and true. Like Him, will I, too, get caught because of my “different” proclamations or will the world not notice me since what I say is strikingly similar to theirs?Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@ gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
If you record what you say the entire day, how much of it brings life to the people you love and serve, and how much verbal pollution do you contribute to the environment?

Purify my heart and fill it with Your joy, Lord, for from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

COMPANION

1st READING

Although the law was good and showed to the people the will of God, it was powerless to save them. The power of sin dwelling in us subverts the law and causes us to do the opposite of what it commands. It is only the free gift of God’s grace and mercy, revealed in Jesus Christ, that can make us righteous in God’s sight.

Romans 3:21-30
21 Brothers and sisters: Now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; 23 all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. 24 They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood, to prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously committed, 26 through the forbearance of God — to prove his righteousness in the present time, that he might be righteous and justify the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 What occasion is there then for boasting? It is ruled out. On what principle, that of works? No, rather on the principle of faith. 28 For we consider that a person is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 Does God belong to Jews alone? Does he not belong to Gentiles, too? Yes, also to Gentiles, 30 for God is one and will justify the circumcised on the basis of faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

P S A L M

Psalms 130:1-2, 3-4, 5-6
R: With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redemption.
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; Lord, hear my voice! 2 Let your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication. (R) 3 If you, O LORD, mark iniquities, LORD, who can stand? 4 But with you is forgiveness, that you may be revered. (R) 5 I trust in the LORD; my soul trusts in his word. 6 My soul waits for the LORD more than sentinels wait for the dawn. (R)

G O S P E L

Jesus could see through all the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and Scribes and for this they hated Him so much. They took great care of the tombs of the prophets and adorned them with precious stones and offerings, yet they had the very Son of God in their midst and they refused to accept His message. Sometimes we can fall into the same trap if we have a great devotion to a saint but do not imitate or follow their teachings.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
I am the way and the truth and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father except through me.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 11:47-54
47 The Lord said: “Woe to you! You build the memorials of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building. 49 Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and Apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute’ 50 in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, 51 from the blood
of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood! 52 Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.” 53 When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things, 54 for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

SABBATH

Once again: Hypocrisy!

Last year, I conducted a seminar about archaeology and the Bible. Among the many things archaeologists have excavated in Palestine are remnants of monumental tombs in honor of the prophets of old, just as Jesus mentions them in today’s Gospel passage. He accuses the Pharisees of building such monuments for the prophets whom their ancestors had murdered. And now, as the last sentence of the Gospel says, they are attacking not a prophet but the Son of God whom they eventually will also bring to His death on the Cross. Again, Jesus exposes what He hates most: hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy is not something we find only in the Pharisees of Jesus’ time. Hypocrisy remains rampant in our world, in our society, and — let us be honest — even in the Church. As we said yesterday, we are proud to be a Christian country but we project a very un-Christian image to other nations. Some people speak out vehemently against the death penalty for heinous crimes but advocate death for unborn babies in the wombs of their mothers. There are politicians who claim to be pro-poor but accumulate immense wealth and cheat when paying taxes. There are regular churchgoers who treat their maids as if they were not also children of God but slaves, and destroy with their gossip the reputation of neighbors.
There are politicians who claim that they want nothing more than to protect the environment but allow — for the money they get out of it — foreign mining companies to destroy forests, watersheds and mountains, and pollute rivers and water sources.
The list is endless. Let us also look into our own daily life and attitudes and discover that we are also infected by it. Our actions do not always match our words and outward behavior.
What would Jesus tell us if He would confront us? And how would we react to His stern, unrelenting criticism?Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Do I tend to discover hypocrisy in others and forget that I myself might also be a hypocrite at times?

Lord, once again You directed my attention to the evil of hypocrisy. Once more, You made me aware of hypocrisy around me and in me. Heal me from this evil and let me become like You: open, direct, straight and clear in my words and actions.

St. Romulus, pray for us.
