Preaching Fearlessly

“For I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the entire plan of God.” – Acts 20:27

I can’t help but admire our priests and bishops as they continue to fight against the passage of the RH Bill. Their teachings are not only opposed by a number of congressmen, senators and non-Catholics but even by fellow Catholics. I remember a priest’s homily wherein he said that many Catholics nowadays rebel against the Catholic Church because they don’t have the discipline to live out God’s teachings on sexuality and marriage. It would have been easier for our Church leaders to compromise their teachings and beliefs so as to please the government and other Christians who approve of the RH Bill. But they choose to follow Jesus’ footsteps and walk in obedience to the will of our heavenly Father.
Bombarded by persecution from all sides, like St. Paul, they do not shrink from proclaiming the truth and God’s perfect plan for the family.
It takes a lot of courage to stand up against powerful people and defy popular philosophy. I pray that more of us Catholics would follow their example and fearlessly preach the Gospel, not only with our words, but more importantly with our lives. Teresa Gumap-as Dumadag (teregmps@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
What is God’s teaching on marriage and sex? Am I faithful to His instructions?

Heavenly Father, illumine my mind that I may recognize Your perfect plan for the family. May You be enthroned in our hearts and in our homes. Reign as King over the Filipino nation.

St. Rita of Cascia, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

Paul senses that his life is soon coming to an end. This does not cause him to despair or worry about his future; all he can think of is the welfare of the communities he has founded and perhaps the future that awaits him in heaven. Let us all seek to be detached from the things of the world so that when God calls us home to Himself, we will be more than ready to go.

Acts 20:17-27
17 From Miletus Paul had the presbyters of the Church at Ephesus summoned. 18 When they came to him, he addressed them, “You know how I lived among you the whole time from the day I first came to the province of Asia. 19 I served the Lord with all humility and with the tears and trials that came to me because of the plots of the Jews, 20 and I did not at all shrink from telling you what was for your benefit, or from teaching you in public or in your homes. 21 I earnestly bore witness for both Jews and Greeks to repentance before God and to faith in our Lord Jesus. 22 But now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem. What will happen to me there I do not know, 23 except that in one city after another the Holy Spirit has been warning me that imprisonment and hardships await me. 24 Yet I consider life of no importance to me, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear witness to the gospel of God’s grace. 25 But now I know that none of you to whom I preached the kingdom during my travels will ever see my face again. 26 And so I solemnly declare to you this day that I am not responsible for the blood of any of you, 27 for I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the entire plan of God.”

P S A L M

Psalm 68:10-11, 20-21
R: Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.
9 [10] A bountiful rain you showered down, O God, upon your inheritance; you restored the land when it languished; 10 [11] your flock settled in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided it for the needy. (R) 19 [20] Blessed day by day be the Lord, who bears our burdens; God, who is our salvation. 20 [21] God is a saving God for us; the Lord, my Lord, controls the passageways of death. (R)

GOSPEL

It is an interesting exercise to reflect on the life of the Triune God to understand how their relationships work. Theologians over the centuries have done this and still they report that the nature of the Trinity remains a mystery to us. However, we do know that as three Persons in one substance, the relationships They have with each other become the basis for any true understanding of communion.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.

John 17:1-11
1 Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, 2 just as you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to all you gave him. 3 Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. 4 I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. 5 Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began. 6 “I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, 8 because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, 10 and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. 11 And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.”

SABBATH

JESUS’ HIGH PRIESTLY PRAYER

We begin reading Chapter 17 of John’s Gospel, which is still part of Jesus’ Farewell Discourse. This time, however, there is a decisive shift. Instead of Jesus addressing His disciples (as He has been doing so far, like leaving His final instructions, assuring them of His continuous presence, and so on), this time we have a Jesus who “looked up to heaven” and prayed to the Father. Today, tomorrow and on Thursday, our Gospel reading is from this so-called High Priestly Prayer of Jesus during the Last Supper.
To think that Jesus prayed for us is already in itself a source of inspiration. “The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful” (James 5:16). We often ask people (close friends, priests and religious, especially) to pray for us. But here now is a plain and simple fact that we can forever take consolation and strength in. Imagine: no less than Christ Himself, at that one crucial point in His life, prayed for us.
Hopefully we shall not render Jesus’ prayer in vain, or undo it with our lives! It’s true — no less than Jesus Himself is the one praying for us. How can God the Father not hear His prayer? But it’s also true that in some strange, mysterious way, the answer to His prayer lies in our own hands. Why is that? As Aesop pointed out from of old, “Heaven helps those who help themselves.” There are no guarantees that prayer alone automatically generates positive results.
And so even if no less than Jesus Himself is the one praying for us — we repeat — it all still depends on us. The essential collaboration and fusion between God’s grace and man’s effort is definitely non-negotiable. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Who do you rely on to pray for you when you need it? How can you be that someone, too, for others?

Lord Jesus, thank You for praying for us. Thank You for the sending us righteous people to intercede for us in prayer.
