The Fallout

They were strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain firmly faithful, for they said, “We must go through many trials to enter the Kingdom of God.” – Acts 14:22

In the late 1990s, there was a start-up village south of Manila. It had a beautiful clubhouse with a pool, a basketball court, but no place of worship. Sunday Mass was celebrated at the clubhouse with an improvised altar and dozens of plastic chairs. It didn’t take long before a group of parishioners, moved by their faith and gung-ho spirit for service, worked relentlessly to build their own chapel. That dream came to fruition but not without fallouts. Some of the original volunteers withdrew from the group, disheartened by the intrigues and endless bickering as the fundraising activities and

construction were in progress.

It’s disconcerting that even church organizations are not exempt from scandals, politicking and squabbles. Members are turned off, they walk out and stop serving the Lord.

Are you a fallout? I was. I allowed the difficult situation to outweigh my sincere desire to serve. If only I remained firmly faithful, I wouldn’t have wasted years of not putting to good use the talent God has given me to be His servant. Marie Franco (mariefranco_pie@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:

The evil one loves to create chaos to delay me in my journey. Will I allow that to happen or should I remain focused in my path?

Oh Lord, enlighten those who are unsuspectingly being used by the evil one to pose as my roadblocks. Let them be my grace builders.

St. Peter of Tarentaise, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

How would you like to be stoned and left for dead on the outskirts of a city? Not a very enjoyable experience, isn’t it? Our natural response would be to avoid antagonizing the people so that it would not happen to us. But this is not what Paul and Barnabas did. They went right back to work proclaiming the Gospel, despite the persecution they suffered. And eventually, they were both martyred for their efforts.

Acts 14:19-28

19 In those days, some Jews from Antioch and Iconium arrived and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. 20 But when the disciples gathered around him, he got up and entered the city. On the following day he left with Barnabas for Derbe. 21 After they had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch. 22 They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God.” 23 They appointed presbyters for them in each Church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith. 24 Then they traveled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia. 25 After proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished. 27 And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 Then they spent no little time with the disciples.

Psalm 145:10-11, 12-13, 21

R: Your friends make known, O Lord, the glorious splendor of your kingdom.

10 Let all your works give you thanks, O Lord, and let your faithful ones bless you. 11 Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. (R) 12 Making known to men your might and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages, and your dominion endures through all generations. (R) 21 May my mouth speak the praise of the Lord, and may all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus’ death and subsequent resurrection scream to us the truth of His and the Father’s love for us. It must have been more difficult for the Father to send His Son to die on the cross than for Jesus to be obedient to this command. What father do you know would be willing to send his son to die for a cause? There wouldn’t be many, if any, and particularly not if the father really loves his son. This demonstrates to us the depth of both the Father and the Son’s love for us.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Christ had to suffer and to rise from the dead, and so enter into his glory.

John 14:27-31

27 Jesus said to his disciples: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. 28 You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. 30 I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me, 31 but the world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the Father has commanded me.

think: It must have been more difficult for the Father to send His Son to die on the cross than for Jesus to be obedient to this command.

SABBATH

The Peace of the World and the Peace of Christ

Reading today’s Gospel passage, we might be tempted to ask, “Wasn’t Jesus fooling His disciples when He promised to give them peace?” Didn’t they all get the opposite of peace — namely trouble, rejection, persecution and eventually a cruel death? Just read today’s First Reading about some of St. Paul’s very bad experiences on one of his missionary journeys. Wasn’t St. Paul more honest when he told his newly converted Christians, “We all have to experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God”? What did Jesus mean when He promised peace? That He did not mean what we understand as peace becomes clear when we listen well to what He said next, “My peace I give you, a peace the world cannot give.”

In the Bible, peace never means simply the absence of trouble. It means something that is good for a person, even if it means trouble. The peace which the world offers is very often a peace of compromise, a peace which comes from avoiding trouble and from refusing to face difficulties. The peace which Jesus offers is different. He Himself faced trouble, persecution and even death. And He was aware that His followers also would experience similar difficulties because they would go into a hostile world and proclaim values opposite to those of the world. Confrontation would be unavoidable.

What Jesus promised His disciples – and us – is an inner peace that is so profound that no trouble and problem could disturb. It is grounded in the assurance of the Lord’s love and constant presence. When I was a child and felt afraid of the dark, all fear was gone when my mother accompanied me. It is the same inner peace that gives the strength to face problems in life.

Pagans were puzzled when they saw Christians being tortured and then dying with a song of praise on their lips. If our troubles disturb us, it might mean we have to deepen our trust in the Lord’s presence. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Are you easily rattled by disturbing news and problems? Could it be that you have forgotten that you are in the hands of a loving God?

Lord, my trust in You is shallow. Send me the Holy Spirit to strengthen my trust in You as He strengthened St. Paul and so many heroes of our faith.
