oN God’S TERMS

“So that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” – John 15:16

George Müller and his orphans was about to have breakfast. There was no food on the table because they didn’t have money. But still he said grace for the nonexistent meal. Then they heard a knock on the door. When he opened it, it was the baker. He told George that he couldn’t sleep the previous night. He felt that God wanted him to bring them some bread.
The baker had barely left when another knock came. This time it was the milkman. His cart broke down in front of the orphanage. He gave them his cans of fresh milk so he could have his cart repaired.
George Müller, a 19th century Christian evangelist, cared for more than 10,000 orphans in his life. He exhibited extraordinary faith believing that God would provide for his needs as he performed his Christian work. Whenever he needed anything either for himself or for his orphans, he would pray and help would arrive in remarkable ways.
George didn’t doubt that whatever he asked God for in prayer, He would provide. We need to have the same attitude: believing and trusting that God will do as He has promised — according to His terms and not ours.Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
When you ask God for something, do you dictate on how and when He is supposed to answer your prayer?

Lord, let not my will but Your perfect will be done.

COMPANION

1ST READING

Peter puts forward the argument that it is the grace of God that saves us. Paul and Barnabas, the two men entrusted to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles a couple of chapters earlier in the Book of Acts, share about their experiences, undoubtedly witnessing to the fact that circumcision has precisely nothing to do with either receiving the grace of salvation or the Gospel itself.

Acts 15:7-21
7 After much debate had taken place, Peter got up and said to the Apostles and presbyters, “My brothers, you are well aware that from early days God made his choice among you that through my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the Gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the Holy Spirit just as he did us. 9 He made no distinction between us and them, for by faith he purified their hearts. 10 Why, then, are you now putting God to the test by placing on the shoulders of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? 11 On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they.” 12 The whole assembly fell silent, and they listened while Paul and Barnabas described the signs and wonders God had worked among the Gentiles through them. 13 After they had fallen silent, James responded, “My brothers, listen to me. 14 Symeon has described how God first concerned himself with acquiring from among the Gentiles a people for his name. 15 The words of the prophets agree with this, as is written: 16 ‘After this I shall return and rebuild the fallen hut of David; from its ruins I shall rebuild it and raise it up again, 17 so that the rest of humanity may seek out the Lord, even all the Gentiles on whom my name is invoked. Thus says the Lord who accomplishes these things, 18 known from of old.’ 19 It is my judgment, therefore, that we ought to stop troubling the Gentiles who turn to God, 20 but tell them by letter to avoid pollution from idols, unlawful marriage, the meat of strangled animals, and blood. 21 For Moses, for generations now, has had those who proclaim him in every town, as he has been read in the synagogues every sabbath.”

P S A L M

Psalm 96:1-2, 2-3, 10
R: Proclaim God’s marvelous deeds to all the nations.
1 Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all you lands. 2 Sing to the Lord; bless his name. (R) Announce his salvation, day after day. 3 Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. (R) 10 Say among the nations: The Lord is king. He has made the world firm, not to be moved; he governs the peoples with equity. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus now tells us that love is the heart of the matter. We must all remain in the love of God if we are truly to become His disciples. The processes of conversion and discipleship all make much more sense when we consider them from within the context of God’s love for us. And when we remain in God’s love, we will be better able to love one another.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me.

John 15:9-11
9 Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. SABBATH

Love Need Not Be Fancy

NBA superstar Michael Jordan was once asked why he always spends some time talking to the kids waiting for him after every Chicago Bulls game. He replied, “It doesn’t take much energy for me to talk to them but it does mean much for the kids.” He does not really give them anything, and the children may not really want anything from him, except his presence and time.
Jesus’ admonition in the Gospel today may seem daunting, “Love one another as I have loved you.” When we survey the Gospels, we see an image of Jesus who always had time for the people. Everywhere He went, people immediately recognized Him. Some wanted to be healed, some wanted to be cleansed. But some merely wanted to be inspired by His mere presence and attention. And Jesus never frustrates them. He was always available to them, listening to them, being attentive to them.
Sometimes we shy away from people, thinking that we do not have anything to give them. We say, “I cannot solve his problem anyway, so why would I bother to listen to him?” Many opportunities for healing are wasted by this mentality.
As a seminarian, I was assigned to a hospital. I had this fear of approaching and talking to the patients, thinking that I could not solve their problems anyway. But soon I found out that most patients do not really expect me to solve their problems. All they want is to feel that someone shares their fears and apprehensions. Most of the time, all they expect is a warm smile, an encouraging word, a gentle tap on the shoulder, or a listening ear. Listening and being present to others may not demand much from us but it can mean a lot for those who need it.
We cannot be healers like the Lord Jesus but we can all heal the internal pains and hurts of people around us by our gentle smile, our attentiveness, our compassion, our willingness to listen. Today let us think of the persons who may be hurting right now and, like the Lord, let us yearn to heal them by our compassionate presence and attentiveness. Fr. Joel Jason

REFLECTION QUESTION: “You think you may be just one person in the world, but for one person you may mean the world.” How true is this in your life?

Lord Jesus, may I be Your presence to the hurting people You have placed in my own little world.
