Miracle-Gro

Meanwhile the word of God continued to spread and grow. – Acts 12:24

Towards the end of 2010 our Feast builder, Arun Gogna, shared a happy bit of information with us. The Feast Alabang was the fastest growing Feast in the world! In a little over a year, we were blessed with:
• Three sessions serving a total of 1,400 attendees every Sunday and counting; • Our own center, complete with equipment and instruments, abuzz with activity during the week;
• Almost 200 servants running The Feast and making the Center a welcoming, happy home;
• Generous, faithful attendees.
Bro. Arun was not boasting. He was praising God for the many miracles that made the growth possible.
But more than the statistics is the way God transformed the lives of the Alabang Feasters. Because of the transformation, they bring family members who bring friends who bring their families who bring friends.
We just keep growing and growing. And it’s not just in Alabang. All the other Feasts are also in explosion mode. Truly, God’s Word is spreading like wildfire. Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
How can I spread the Word of God in my small way to help His kingdom grow?

“Make me an instrument… make me a shining light that radiates your ways.” (From the song “All About Your Glory” by Tommy Walker).

St. Athanasius, bishop and doctor of the Church, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

We all have a job to do and a role to play in the Kingdom of God. Each part is essential for the overall vision God has for the world. Let us submit ourselves to His wisdom rather than decide for ourselves what we want to do. “Let God be God” and He will take care of the rest.

Acts 12:24-13:5
24 The word of God continued to spread and grow. 25 After Barnabas and Saul completed their relief mission, they returned to Jerusalem, taking with them John, who is called Mark. 13: 1 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, completing their fasting and prayer, they laid hands on them and sent them off. 4 So they, sent forth by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there sailed to Cyprus. 5 When they arrived in Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues.

P S A L M

Psalm 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8
R: O God, let all the nations praise you!
1 [2] May God have pity on us and bless us; may he let his face shine upon us. 2 [3] So may your way be known upon earth; among all nations, your salvation. (R) 4 [5] May the nations be glad and exult because you rule the peoples in equity; the nations on the earth you guide. (R) 5 [6] May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you! 7 [8] May God bless us, and may all the ends of the earth fear him! (R)

GOSPEL

The dynamic of God’s will at work in the proclamation of the Gospel is quite simple: Do whatever God wants you to do. This is precisely the path followed by Jesus and if it is good enough for Him, it should be for us, too. A mission is accomplished when everyone does what the plan tells them to do. As soon as people start doing what they think is best, things get missed and goals are not achieved. Let us not be the reason for the failure of the Gospel to reach a certain person or group of people.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.

John 12:44-50
44 Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me believes not only in me but also in the one who sent me, 45 and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me. 46 I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears my words and does not observe them, I do not condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save the world. 48 Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words has something to judge him: the word that I spoke, it will condemn him on the last day, 49 because I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. So what I say, I say as the Father told me.”

think: Let us not be the reason for the failure of the Gospel to reach a certain person or group of people.

SABBATH

encounter Jesus , encounter God

“I want to see Jesus,” a beautiful song goes. And I guess all of us are somehow a bit jealous thinking of the people who have seen and heard Jesus with their own eyes and ears. But as for us, the only way we can see Jesus is by reading the Gospels.
In today’s Gospel passage Jesus claims that in Him we are confronted with God. To listen to Him is to listen to God; to see Him is to see God. In Him, God meets man, and man meets God. But with our sinfulness, are we not a bit afraid of meeting God face to face?
Jesus says that He did not come into the world to condemn but to save. It was not the wrath of God which sent Jesus to men; it was God’s love. Yet the coming of Jesus inevitably involves judgment. By our attitude to Jesus we show what He is and therefore judge ourselves.
If we find in Jesus a profound attraction, we feel the pull of God on our hearts, and therefore we are safe. If, on the other hand, we see in Jesus nothing lovely and our hearts remain completely untouched in His presence, it means we are unreceptive to God, and we have therefore judged ourselves.
Jesus also said that, on the last day, the words which people had heard would be their judges. That is one of the great truths of life. We cannot be blamed for not knowing, but if we know the right and do the wrong, His
condemnation is all the more serious. Therefore every wise thing that we heard, and every opportunity we had to know the truth, will in the end be a witness against us.
Jesus reminds us that what He said are actually not His words but the Father’s. Again, whenever we read or hear the Gospel, it is God Himself whom we encounter and who speaks to us. Could that thought not make us more attentive to the Gospels and more alert to practice what we hear? Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

REFLECTION QUESTION: Are you aware enough that reading the Bible is an encounter with God?

Lord, too often I read or hear the Gospels without being attentive enough. Send me the Holy Spirit to appreciate Your Word more.
