ghost vs. God’s word

Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.... The jailer... was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God — he and his whole household. – Acts 16:32, 34

“I saw a ghost early this morning in the kitchen,” our spooked helper reported. Another one confirmed, “We often hear the toilet in the driver’s room flushing by itself.”
Before long, I had a scared household. The maids always wanted to do their household chores in twos, especially at night. I knew I had to intervene before the situation got out of hand. I needed to wield my weapon, the Sword of the Spirit.
So I gathered our helpers one evening. We prayed. I opened the Bible and shared with them how the devil can use fear to paralyze us. While ghosts do exist, the Lord’s power surpasses that of the evil one, I added. I also told them how our house was a fulfillment of a promise God made to me many years ago and my ensuing belief of His protection upon our home.
My helpers received God’s Word with joy. Their fears were overcome with faith.
We also discovered that to exorcise the “ghost” in the driver’s room, all we needed was a plumber. Rissa Singson-Kawpeng (justbreatherissa@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

Lord, let the truth of Your Word reign supreme in my life.

St. Isidore the farmer, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

Flogged and thrown into prison just for preaching the Gospel — these are what Paul and so many others after him suffered. Yet it didn’t stop them. What does this tell us about the nature of the Gospel and the character of those who truly give their lives in its service? It tells us that there is an urgency and imperative to proclaim the Gospel, which is difficult to resist when one has committed one’s life to its purpose.

Acts 16:22-34
22 The crowd in Philippi joined in the attack on Paul and Silas, and the magistrates had them stripped and ordered them to be beaten with rods. 23 After inflicting many blows on them, they threw them into prison and instructed the jailer to guard them securely. 24 When he received these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and secured their feet to a stake. 25 About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened, 26 there was suddenly such a severe earthquake that the foundations of the jail shook; all the doors flew open, and the chains of all were pulled loose. 27 When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted out in a loud voice, “Do no harm to yourself; we are all here.” 29 He asked for a light and rushed in and, trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you and your household will be saved.” 32 So they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his house. 33 He took them in at that hour of the night and bathed their wounds; then he and all his family were baptized at once. 34 He brought them up into his house and provided a meal and with his household rejoiced at having come to faith in God.

P S A L M

Psalm 138:1-2, 2-3, 7-8
R: Your right hand saves me, O Lord.
1 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth; in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise; 2 I will worship at your holy temple and give thanks to your name. (R) Because of your kindness and your truth, for you have made great above all things your name and your promise. 3 When I called, you answered me; you built up strength within me. (R) 7 Your right hand saves me. 8 The Lord will complete what he has done for me; your kindness, O Lord, endures forever; forsake not the work of your hands. (R)

GOSPEL

BLESSING
Jesus’ presence to the world in His mission of salvation is as a singular person. When He returns to the Father, the Holy Spirit will be sent to all Christians. This is the greater reality that Jesus speaks of here. It is the reason why it is better if He returns to the Father. God knows what He is doing; He will always do what is best for us. This is because God loves us and will do all that is possible to help us gain eternal life.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
I will send to you the Spirit of truth, says the Lord; he will guide you to all the truth.

John 16:5-11
5 Jesus said to his disciples: “Now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. 7 But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I
go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation: 9 sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11 condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.”
LIST
think: God loves us and will do all that is possible to help us gain eternal life.

SABBATH

The Parable of the Son

There was a wealthy widower who was a great art lover. He is famous for his collection of the Masters in the world of painting. He also has a son whom he loves so much. In fact, a portrait of his son is displayed along the paintings of the Masters. Father and son died in an accident, but the father was able to leave behind a last will and testament where he stated that the paintings are to be sold in auction beginning with the portrait of his son.
During the auction, many people came, eager to buy the works of the Masters. The family lawyer started the auction with the portrait of the son first. “Who wants the portrait of the son?” he asked. No one responded. He asked a second time, and a third time, but they all shouted back, “We don’t want the son! We want the works of the Masters!”
Suddenly, someone from the back shouted, “I’ll take it!” He was the former gardener of the father and son. “How much will you give for it?” the lawyer asked. “I can only give $20.” The lawyer then announced, “We have here $20; will anyone give more?” Someone from the crowd shouted, “Give it to him for $20. We don’t want the son!” The lawyer then said, “Well then, it is sold for $20.” When he took the portrait of the son and gave it to the gardener, a small piece of paper fell — a portion of the father’s Last Will and Testament. It read, “He who takes the portrait of my son, gets all the other portraits. He who loves my son, loves me as well.” The auction was over.
Jesus laments the sad reality in the Gospel. He came into the world, “but the world refuse to believe in me.” The prophets and evangelists shout, “Who would take the son?” But just like in the story, we reply, “We don’t want the Son. We want something else!” We are actually saying, “We don’t want Jesus! We want the works of the masters: power, money, pleasure.” Just like in the story, the Father wants us to take the Son because if we have the Son, we have everything else. The Father wants us to have Jesus, for if we have Him, we will have everything else. Fr. Joel Jason

REFLECTION QUESTION: Does God occupy the highest place in the hierarchy of your desires?

“Like a deer that yearns for running streams, so my soul yearns for You, my God.”
