True Fruitfulness

“Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5

St. Padre Pio de Pietrelcina was already sickly as a young boy of six years old. And yet he lived to help many people bothspiritually and physically. He counselled thousands, considering them his spiritual sons and daughters. He also founded the “Home to Relieve Suffering” hospital, which is considered one of the most efficient hospitals in Italy and Europe. Of course, Padre Pio is well-known for his miracle-working powers. If that were not enough for one person’s life, he often said, “After my death I will do more. My real mission will begin after my death.”
Padre Pio believes that any good work we hope to accomplish will have to stem from a close relationship with the Lord. That’s the secret of true fruitfulness, and what today’s verse tries to impart to us.
If your heart is filled with passion for the Lord and His vineyard, thank God for it. And know that you are not alone for He has promised, “I am with you always until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Indeed He will be. And because of Him, you bear fruit (Hosea 14:9). REFLECTION:
Do I want to do good? How is my relationship with the Lord?

Dear Lord, let me bear fruit as You see fit. Grant me the grace to allow You to work through me.

Sts. Marian and James, pray for us.

1ST READING

“Filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit” is an interesting phrase. What does it mean here? Perhaps, as this was written a few decades after the event, it is a reflection on what experience the early disciples would have needed with regard to their relationship with the Holy Spirit. With all the persecution they received, they would have needed a lot of encouragement to survive. The obvious source of this encouragement and consolation would be the Holy Spirit.

Acts 9:26-31
26 When Saul arrived in Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. 27 Then Barnabas took charge of him and brought him to the apostles, and he reported to them how on the way he had seen the Lord and that he had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus. 28 He moved about freely with them in Jerusalem, and spoke out boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He also spoke and debated with the Hellenists, but they tried to kill him. 30 And when the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him on his way to Tarsus. 31 The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers.

Psalm 22:26-27, 28, 30, 31-32
R: I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people.
25 [26] I will fulfill my vows before those who fear the Lord. 26 [27] The lowly shall eat their fill; they who seek the Lord shall praise him “May your hearts live forever!” (R) 27 [28] All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; all the families of the nations shall bow down before him. (R) 29 [30] To him alone shall bow down all who sleep in the earth; before him shall bend all who go down into the dust. (R) And to him my soul shall live; 30 [31] my descendants shall serve him. Let the coming generation be told of the Lord 31 [32] that they may proclaim to a people yet to be born the justice he has shown. (R)

2ND READING

“God is greater than our conscience and He knows everything.” This is something we all need to remember when we make moral decisions. Ultimately, everything rests in the person of God and not in human wisdom. This is why the teachings of the Church are so important to us Catholics. They guide us according to the mind and will of God — the truth — and thus help us avoid relativism, which is often guided by self-interest rather than the truth.

1 John 3:18-24
18 Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. 19 Now this is how we shall know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts before him 20 in whatever our hearts condemn, for God is greater than our hearts and knows everything. 21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence in God 22 and receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 23 And his commandment is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us. 24 Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them, and the way we know that he remains in us is from the Spirit that he gave us.

GOSPEL

The only way we can ensure that we remain attached to the vine, so to speak, is by living the truth as God has revealed it to us. The truth is rarely easy to follow; it often means that we have to make sacrifices to remain faithful to it. Just as a vine is trimmed or pruned in order to maximize its potential for bearing fruit, or to guide it to form a particular shape, so must we allow the truth to form and shape us according to the wisdom and mindset of God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord. Whoever remains in me will bear much fruit.

John 15:1-8
1 Jesus said to his disciples: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. 2 He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. 3 You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. 4 Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. 8 By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”

SABBATH

ARE YOU THREATENED OR ENCOURAGED?

For us, the image of the vine and the branches might not say much since we do not see vineyards every day. But in Israel, vineyards can be found everywhere; they were and still are part of the landscape. Not only that, the prophets of old had often used the image of the vineyard or of the vine as a symbol for Israel. “The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel,” Isaiah says in chapter 5 of his book. And all in Israel knew about the great bunch of golden grapes in front of the Holy Place in the Temple of Jerusalem.
It was and still is not easy to cultivate vine that bears plenty of grapes. Much pruning is necessary to cut away fruitless branches so that they will not drain away the strength of the plant. Several times a year, fruitless branches are cut away and burned. It’s interesting also that the wood of the vine is burned because it would serve no purpose. It was, by the way, the only wood that was not admitted to be donated for the sacrifices in the Temple.
This little background tells us that Jesus knew very well what He was talking about. The parable of the vine and the branches is threatening as well as encouraging. It is threatening if we are like the branches that do not bring any fruit, when we are indifferent and don’t care about our spiritual life and do not practice what God tells us. It is threatening if we think we could live a life disconnected from Christ, from His Church and from the sacraments.
But the parable is encouraging as long as we try all we can to remain united with Christ, with His Church and treasure the sacraments. It encourages us to seek this unity especially in the Eucharist where the graces and blessings — the life-giving sap, to use the image of the vine — flow from Christ into our very being. It encourages us to seek daily spiritual nourishment by reading the Sacred Scriptures since, according to Jesus, we do not live from bread alone but from every word that comes from the mouth of God.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

REFLECTION QUESTION: What can you do to strengthen your spiritual lifeline with God?

Lord, let me never forget that without the nourishing grace of the sacraments and Your Word, I would die spiritually and be unable to bring the fruit You expect from me.
