MATCHING INTERIORS

His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee. – Mark 1:28

A couple of years back, my wife and I went to the garage sale of a friend. Although we didn’t have any specific item in mind, we thought we might find some small items that we like.
We ended up with a couple of small items and a big one — a dining set. We fell in love with its glass top, dark brown body and leather cream upholstery. However, we noticed a problem when we were setting it up in our house. The set didn’t match our interiors! So what was supposed to be a simple dining table purchase resulted in the repainting of our walls, the installation of new curtains and a new sofa.
The Gospel today speaks about spreading the news about Christ. People have to see Him in all aspects of our lives if we want to be effective in sharing the Gospel. In the same way our dining set had to match with everything else in the room, people have to see that our lives in church or in community harmonize with the persons that we are when we’re in secular places.
Jesus should affect not only one area of our life but our whole being.Alvin Fabella (alvinfabella@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Is your life’s witness consistent?

Lord, I entrust to You my life and ask You to take the lead. Let me be a faithful witness for You. Amen.

1st READING

Hannah places her situation before the Lord and Eli also prays for her. She ultimately conceives a son. It was not God’s plan that she remains barren. She need not have worried about her situation. And what a son will be born to her — one of the greatest of the Old Testament seers and guides of Israel. Samuel will become not just a blessing for Hannah but all the people of Israel.

1 Samuel 1:9-20
9 Hannah rose after one such meal at Shiloh, and presented herself before the LORD; at the time, Eli the priest was sitting on a chair near the doorpost of the LORD’s temple. 10 In her bitterness she prayed to the LORD, weeping copiously, 11 and she made a vow, promising, “O LORD of hosts, if you look with pity on the misery of your handmaid, if you remember me and do not forget me, if you give your handmaid a male child, I will give him to the LORD for as long as he lives; neither wine nor liquor shall he drink, and no razor shall ever touch his head.” 12 As she remained long at prayer before the LORD, Eli watched her mouth, 13 for Hannah was praying silently; though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. Eli, thinking her drunk, 14 said to her, “How long will you make a drunken show of yourself? Sober up from your wine!” 15 “It isn’t that, my lord,” Hannah answered. “I am an unhappy woman. I have had neither wine nor liquor; I was only pouring out my troubles to the LORD. 16 Do not think your handmaid a ne’er-do-well; my prayer has been prompted by my deep sorrow and misery.” 17 Eli said, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.” 18 She replied, “Think kindly of your maidservant,” and left. She went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and no longer appeared downcast. 19 Early the next morning they worshipped before the LORD, and then returned to their home in Ramah. When Elkanah had relations with his wife Hannah, the LORD remembered her. 20 She conceived, and at the end of her term bore a son whom she called Samuel, since she had asked the LORD for him.

P S A L M

1 Samuel 2:1, 4-5, 6-7, 8abcd
R: My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
1 “My heart exults in the LORD, my horn is exalted in my God. I have swallowed up my enemies; I rejoice in my victory.” (R) 4 “The bows of the mighty are broken, while the tottering gird on strength. 5 The well-fed hire themselves out for bread, while the hungry batten on spoil. The barren wife bears seven sons, while the mother of many languishes.” (R) 6 “The LORD puts to death and gives life; he casts down to the nether world; he raises up again. 7 The LORD makes poor and makes rich, he humbles, he also exalts.” (R) 8 “He raises the needy from the dust; from the ash heap he lifts up the poor, To seat them with nobles and make a glorious throne their heritage.” (R)

G O S P E L

From the outset of Jesus’ ministry we see that he has authority over the demonic. It is clear that Mark wants us to place this fact firmly at the forefront of our minds as we meditate upon his Gospel, as it is essential to the life of a disciple. To be a disciple is to know that we are given authority over sin and its power in our lives; we do not have to be captive to them any more.

Mark 1:21-28
21 Jesus came to Capernaum with his followers, and on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. 22 The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. 23 In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; 24 he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!” 25 Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” 26 The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. 27 All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” 28 His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

I KNOW WHO HAS THE ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM

Hannah is a very smart and faithful woman. She knows who has the answers to the question and problem that plagues her life. She knows the answer does not lie in the wisdom and practices of the world; it is only God who can help her with her troubles. Therefore she sets off to the Temple to pray. As if she does not have enough problems, Eli thinks she is drunk. However, God hears her prayers and comes to her aid.
Each of us will face a similar situation. We will be confronted with seemingly insurmountable problems and we will be faced with the choice to fall into despair and give up, or to place our problem before God and await His solution. It is obvious that the second option is the better one. In fact, it is the only path that will lead to an answer.
Perhaps the most difficult thing we can be asked to do is to entrust everything to God; the truth is, this is the only way we will truly live and experience the life that God has planned for us. We can choose a path of self-sufficiency and we might have a very satisfied existence. However, look at it this way — if this is how good life can be without God as the center and guide of all things, then how much more satisfying and blessed could my life be if God was the center and master of every aspect of it? This is something we have to consider carefully because our choice will not only have immediate consequences to our life on earth; it could also have eternal consequences if we deliberately choose a life of sin.
Hannah is a wonderful example of a woman of faith; there are countless others in the Scriptures, the roll call of the saints and so on. Let us look to the examples of their lives in order to be inspired to give ourselves to God.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Who is the master of my life? Do I rely on God for guidance?

Father, thank You for the example of the lives of the saints. Help me to follow them as best as I can.

St. Arcadius, pray for us.
