FISHERS OF MEN

“Come after me and I will make you fishers of men.” – Mark 1:17

The Bukas Loob Sa Diyos-Gawad Kalinga ministry (BLD-GK) members were awake at the crack of dawn on a rainy Sunday for the two-hour drive to Cabiao, Nueva Ecija. They were eager to conduct a basic Bible seminar.
It was the first time for most of the participants to hold a Bible. At the far end of the packed room, a frail-looking man in his mid-50s was visibly struggling with the first exercise. I immediately approached him. I saw the pain in his eyes as he struggled to write down the titles of the different books of the Bible. He got stuck with “Exodo“ and lagged far behind the rest of the class.
I soon realized what his problem was. He could barely write and was patiently copying from the blackboard, one letter at a time. But it did not stop him from actively participating and listening intently all day long.
It was almost dark and it was pouring when we left the Fr. Lehman’s BLD-GK village. My husband, Raul, and I were tired, sweaty and smelly. But our hearts were full of joy and love. We had done our part in spreading the Gospel, at least for that day. Mari Sison-Garcia (mari_sison_garcia@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

Lord, continue to use me to help build Your kingdom.

COMPANION

1st READING

There are so many things we worry about in our lives and many of them are unnecessary. Hannah is grieved over her inability to bear a child for her husband. If this was indeed a work of the Lord then worrying about it is not going to change the situation. The best and only response to any situation we encounter is obedience to God’s will. Everything else is up to Him.

1 Samuel 1:1-8
1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim, Elkanah by name, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives, one named Hannah, the other Peninnah; Peninnah had children, but Hannah was childless. 3 This man regularly went on pilgrimage from his city to worship the LORD of hosts and to sacrifice to him at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were ministering as priests of the LORD. 4 When the day came for Elkanah to offer sacrifice, he used to give a portion each to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters, 5 but a double portion to Hannah because he loved her, though the LORD had made her barren. 6 Her rival, to upset her, turned it into a constant reproach to her that the LORD had left her barren. 7 This went on year after year; each time they made their pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the LORD, Peninnah would approach her, and Hannah would weep and refuse to eat. 8 Her husband Elkanah used to ask her, “Hannah, why do you weep, and why do you refuse to eat? Why do you grieve? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

Psalm 116:12-13, 14-16, 18-19
R: To you, Lord, I will offer a sacrifice of praise.
12 How shall I make a return to the LORD for all the good he has done for me? 13 The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the LORD. (R) 14 My vows to the LORD I will pay in the presence of all his people. 15 Precious in the eyes of the LORD is the death of his faithful ones. 16 O LORD, I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your handmaid; you have loosed my bonds. (R) 18 My vows to the LORD I will pay in the presence of all his people, 19 In the courts of the house of the LORD, in your midst, O Jerusalem. (R)

The arrest of John the Baptist and his subsequent death is a tipping point in Jesus’ life that precipitates His ministry. The forerunner has run his race and now it is time for him to begin proclaiming the Gospel. Mark’s version or summary of the Gospel is clear and concise – repent and believe. We will do well if we make these commands of Jesus the foundationof our lives.
Matthew 21-24
Mark 1:14-20
14 After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: 15 “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” 16 As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. 17 Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 18 Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. 19 He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. 20 Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

THE ESSENCE OF DISCIPLESHIP

The essence of discipleship is obedience. This is worked out, practically speaking, in our lives, through our willingness to follow where the Spirit of God leads us. Jesus calls the first disciples and they follow Him. This sounds like a very simple dynamic but if we look a little deeper into the word “follow,” we will discover that it is not as simple as it first seems.
To follow carries with it the connotation of imitating what someone does. Thus, disciples of Jesus are really imitators of Jesus; whatever He does or says serves as an example that marks out the life we are to live as His disciples. If it is good enough for Jesus, it is good enough for us. This applies to every aspect of our lives, including suffering. At the heart of the idea of imitating another person is the belief that their life is worth imitating. We should work towards this point sothat others will believe that our lives are worth imitating.
Another meaning of the word “follow” is the physical act of following a person along a particular path or journey. It is not enough just to watch Christianity happen around us; we need to be personally involved, and the only way to be so is to “walk the walk” and “talk the talk.” A disciple is willing to go wherever the Master leads him or her. This can be very challenging at times, particularly when we do not understand where we are going or even why we are going. This is where faith and trust come into the equation of discipleship. We have to learn to trust Jesus that wherever He leads us, there is a good purpose and reason.
Sometimes it is not for us to understand everything; but it is always true that we should obey everything God asks us to do. The challenges we will face in the life of discipleship are many and varied but we can always overcome them through trust and obedience to God. This may not be easy, but it is the path to eternal life — and I am sure that is the goal of us all!Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How can I become a more faithful follower of Jesus?

Holy Spirit, show me the things in my life that are hindering my growth in faith and help me to renounce each one of them.

St. Boadin, pray for us.
