EMPOWERING LOVE

We love because He first loved us. –1 John 4:19

A young pastor replaced the beloved founder of a Christian community. While everyone encouraged him, there were three influential ladies who did not. In fact, they gave this young leader a hard time in carrying out his ministry.
This bothered him but the Lord gave him a dream that night. He went to heaven and was shown a sculpture of his life. It was fantastic and beautiful to say the least. It had a lot of color and detail. It was a sight to behold! The artwork was still in the process of completion and was being engraved in the ground. The young man cried out, “Wow, Lord, is this your work in my life?” The Lord nodded and said, “You owe it to the diggers through whom I am engraving this work of art. Would you like to meet them?”
The man turned around and saw the three church ladies.
God loves us. This love empowers us to love even the unlovable. He sends us people not just for us to love but so He could create something wonderful and bigger in our lives through His love.Ariel Driz (adriz77@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Who are the difficult people in my life that the Lord is calling me to love today?

Lord Jesus, let Your love continue to empower me! Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

God’s love comes first. We do not initiate anything with God. His grace is always at work within us, forming and developing our desires within to conform to His will. We merely respond to His love and will by opening our hearts and mind to His truth and acting upon it. It is choosing to do this day after day that will make us truly His disciples. Discipleship is not some sort of mysterious miracle worked in our lives. It is the result of daily following God’s will and growing in love for Him and our neighbor.

1 John 4:19-5:4
19 Beloved, we love God because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. 5: 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves also the one begotten by him. 2 In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.

Psalm 72:1-2, 14, 15bc, 17
R: Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
1 O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son; 2 He shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment. (R) 14 From fraud and violence he shall redeem them, and precious shall their blood be in his sight. 15 May they be prayed for continually; day by day shall they bless him. (R) 17 May his name be blessed forever; as long as the sun his name shall remain. In him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall proclaim his happiness. (R)

G O S P E L

Once again Jesus shifts the focus from Himself and puts Himself in the place of a servant of God working to bring about God’s will in the lives of the people.Yes, He says that God’s Spirit is upon Him, but the same is true for us all. What is critical is that Jesus is always placing His will, His work and His efforts at the service of the Kingdom of God, and not His own desires and plans. When He dies, He looks up to heaven and tells His Father, “It is accomplished.” This is how I want to end my life as well.

Luke 4:14-22
14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. 15 He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. 16 He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read 17 and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” 20 Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. 21 He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.

my reflections
think: God’s love comes first. We do not initiate anything with God. His grace is always at work within us, forming and developing our desires within to conform to His will.

THE TRANSFORMING POWER OF THE GOSPEL

If you want to know what is the greatest power at work in the universe, all you have to do is think about the power of the Gospel — the power of love to transform a person from the inside out. There is no greater power than the power of love. Love is one of the most popular subjects for songs as we recognize its power and application to our lives immediately. It is love that truly mesmerizes the poet within us and can cause us to lose our sense of time when we are in the presence of someone we love.
One of the most important aspects of love is its “other-directedness.” When love is directed solely to one’s own self, it becomes destructive, as Narcissus found when he fell in love with his own reflection in the river. When he leaned over better to admire himself, he fell in the river and drowned. This is precisely the tragedy of self-love gone crazy; one cannot see beyond one’s own needs and desires and they eventually drown us in self-absorption.
The nature of the Gospel is that it is a gift for others. One of the first experiences when we have received the Gospel is the desire to share the Good News with others. This is not a mistake. This is part of the dynamic of the Good News of salvation. Jesus expresses His understanding that the Gospel is the Good News sent to those who are struggling to lift their eyes from their troubles and give them a new focus that brings them life.
The challenge we all face here is to apply the Gospel to our lives by living the Good News on a daily basis. It is easy to live as a redeemed person once in a while; the challenge we face is to do this as a consistent witness to the power of the Gospel to transform every kind of human situation. Let us rejoice that Jesus has unleashed such a power in the world — we can become sharers in the life of God through our faith in Him.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I really believe that I am redeemed? If so, do I live this reality? What can I do to live the life of a redeemed person more consistently?

Heavenly Father, Your love is an all-powerful instrument for change. Help me to surrender to Your love and so begin to live the life of the redeemed.

St. Aidric, pray for us.
