Real Insurance

“Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid.” – Mark 6:50

The picture on the front page of the business section said it all: a stock market staff holding his head in disbelief at the precipitous plunge of the stock market indices. It was happening across the globe, sparked by the bankruptcy of a number of financial institutions in the US. So eroded was the confidence on financial markets that some Americans were buying precious metal bullions like gold, platinum and silver.
When this happened, my employees consulted me whether they should continue paying their insurance premiums to a giant insurance company that was being sold because its principal based in the US had also gone bankrupt.
I shared with them that long ago, I discovered a better kind of insurance. That’s why I stopped getting personal and car insurances. I figure you pay good money today for an amount that will not really amount to something significant in the future.
Instead, I learned to put my trust in God for my real insurance. By putting my money and investing my time in the service of the Father’s business, He rewards me with financial stability. Rolly España (rolly@homeliving.com.ph)

REFLECTION:
“The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine, says the Lord of hosts.” (Haggai 2:8)

Father in heaven, teach me to trust You more, especially in times of crisis.

COMPANION

1st READING

We need never be afraid of the truth of God’s love for us. Any doubt we may have of this truth is a work of Satan — and as such we should dismiss it immediately from our minds. The truth of God’s love for us must become the foundation of our lives and all of our relationships. Personally knowing God’s love will enable us not only to love Him but also to love others. Love, indeed, is the answer to all of the world’s problems. The only thing is to work out how to bring love to bear on each problem so that it can be transformed according to God’s will.

1 John 4:11-18
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. 13 This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spirit. 14 Moreover, we have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world. 15 Whoever acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God. 16 We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. 17 In this is love brought to perfection among us, that we have confidence on the day of judgment because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love.

Psalm 72:1-2, 10, 12-13
R: Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
1 O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son; 2 He shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment. (R) 10 The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts; the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute. (R) 12 For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. 13 He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save. (R)

Jesus demonstrates His power over the elements, not to boast and draw attention to Himself, but to demonstrate His credentials — that He speaks and works in the name of God. Who else has such powers as this? At the same time we see that Jesus does not work miracles for His own advantage but for the benefit of others. We must live our lives with the same selflessness. Our ministry in the Church is not for our own glory, but for the glory of God.

Mark 6:45-52
45 After the five thousand had eaten and were satisfied, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side toward Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 And when he had taken leave of them, he went off to the mountain to pray. 47 When it was evening, the boat was far out on the sea and he was alone on shore. 48 Then he saw that they were tossed about while rowing, for the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them. 49 But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out. 50 They had all seen him and were terrified. But at once he spoke with them, “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!” 51 He got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were [completely] astounded. 52 They had not understood the incident of the loaves. On the contrary, their hearts were hardened.

my reflections
think: Personally knowing God’s love will enable us not only to love Him but also to love others.

SABBATH

TO BE COMPLETELY FREE FROM FEAR

Let us reflect upon today’s First Reading from the first letter of St.John and ask ourselves, “Am I free from all fear in my life?” If we cannot answer this question with a resounding “No!” then we can be sure that we have not yet opened our lives to, and fully received, the love that God wants to pour into our hearts.
The reason that Jesus was freely and joyfully able to embrace God’s will for His life was that He knew and fully experienced the love of the Father. If only we could come to know the Father’s love to the extent Jesus knew it, we would be transformed people.
When we are firmly based in the infinite love of God we will not fear anything because we know that whatever happens God is by our side to see us through it. Sometimes when I read the accounts of the martyrs of the Church I wonder at their seeming indifference to the suffering they were about to face or were in the middle of experiencing. How did they do it? They simply entrusted themselves to the love and mercy of God and that was that.
Jesus’ entire life is a testimony to the power of knowing God’s love in order to overcome all obstacles — even death brought by sin. It is God’s love that redeemed us as Jesus died on the cross; it is God’s love that raises us to eternal glory to share in the resurrection of Jesus His Son. It is love that transforms human beings into more than instinctual animals. It is our ability to know, receive, give and  reflect upon love’s nature that makes us different from the rest of creation.
St. John tells us that perfect love casts out all fear; it does so because love and fear are opposites. A love born of fear is imperfect. We must therefore seek to respond to God’s love out of love for Him rather than out of fear of the consequences if we do not. Let us seek to learn to love one another and God so that we will always be motivated by love and the desire for unity, and not just by fear of hell if we remain in our sins.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
When I say I love God, what motivates me to believe and say this? Do I love God out of fear of Him, or simply because He is good?

Lord Jesus, help me to overcome any fear of God I may have in my life so that I will be motivated by His goodness and blessings.

St. Melanie, pray for us.
