Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

THE GOOD SHEPHERD

“Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom….” – Isaiah 40:11

My pet cat Casper had an appetite problem. He was choosy with food and ate like a bird. So whenever he skipped a meal, I thought that was normal. But when Casper was one year old, he didn’t eat for five days. He got thinner and weaker. I got alarmed because if it continued, he could die. So I brought him to the vet and had him confined. The following morning, I visited him. When I saw him inside the cage looking weak and helpless, my heart sank. It pained me to see him in that condition. After he was discharged, I continued to give him his medications and my tender loving care. He recovered and his appetite improved. He is now four years old and is strong and healthy.
If I can be compassionate over a sick cat, just think how much more our Heavenly Father is to us. The Lord knows our pain, our suffering and our concerns. When we hurt, it breaks His heart. We can rest assured that like a shepherd, He will care for us, comfort us, protect us and be always on our side. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“You may call God love, you may call God goodness. But the best name for God is compassion.” (Meister Eckhart)

Jesus, my eternal Shepherd, my soul finds rest in You.

COMPANION

1st READING

The words “and the glory of the Lord will be revealed” send a shiver up my spine. What on earth do they mean? To tell you the truth, I do not really care. What I know is that this promise is one that gets me excited every time I read it. It assures me that whatever I am going through must be worthwhile because the “glory of the Lord” is about to be  revealed. Jesus is the glory of the Lord; the Holy Spirit is the glory of the Lord; the Church is the glory of the Lord; the saints are the glory of the Lord; you and I are meant to be the glory of the Lord. Are we?

Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11
1 Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins. 3 A voice cries out in the desert: Prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! 4 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. 5 Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all mankind shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. 9 Go up onto a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings; cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah: Here is your God! 10 Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by his strong arm; here is his reward with him, his recompense before him. 11 Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.

P S A L M

Psalm 104:1b-2, 3-4, 24-25, 27-28, 29-30 (1)
R: O bless the Lord, my soul.
1 O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! You are clothed with majesty and glory, 2 robed in light as with a cloak. You have spread out the heavens like a tent-cloth. (R) 3 You have constructed your palace upon the waters. You make the clouds your chariot; you travel on the wings of the wind. 4 You make the winds your messengers, and flaming fire your ministers. (R) 24 How manifold are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you have wrought them all — the earth is full of your creatures; 25 the sea also, great and wide, in which are schools without number of living things both small and great. (R) 27 They look to you to give them food in due time. 28 When you give it to them, they gather it; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. (R) 29 If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. 30 When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. (R)

2nd READING

Jesus makes known to us the fullness of God’s love. What other motive could God the Father have had in sending His Son but that He loves us? This can be a difficult truth to accept as we all are aware of our unloveableness. We know our sins and how we do not deserve God’s love. This is the beauty of His love — it is there whatever we choose to do. God is the biggest forgiver in the universe and He will always accept a repentant sinner into His arms.

Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7
11 Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all 12 and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, 13 as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of the great God and of our savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good. 3: 4 When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, 5 not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, 7 so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.

G O S P E L

The baptism of Jesus does not make Him holy but rather sanctifies the waters of baptism for all of us. It is through Jesus’ identification with us in His humanity and fulfillment of His Father’s will that we can be saved through the waters of baptism. As we are immersed in the waters of baptism, we join Christ in His death on the cross. As we rise from the same waters, we rise to new life with the Christ of the resurrection.

Luke 3:15-16, 21-22
15 The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 21 After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

my reflections
t h i n k : God is the biggest forgiver in the universe and He will always accept a repentant sinner into His arms.

SABBATH

TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT
John the Baptist tells the people that there is someone coming who will baptize them in the Holy Spirit, not just water. I wonder what they thought about this? I wonder what we think about it today also. We live in a very materialistic world where the language and understanding of the Holy Spirit is not often used or spoken. It seems that we are becoming used to not having much to do with the Holy Spirit.
The gift of the Holy Spirit is given to us in Baptism. When Jesus is baptized, the Sacrament of Baptism is given its everlasting power and character. Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, sanctifies the waters of Baptism with not just the forgiveness of sins, but also the gift of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Holy Spirit is sort of a welcome gift as we come into God’s family. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that we must learn to live our lives. This is where the role of the parents and godparents is so crucial to the newly baptized – it is their responsibility to form the newly baptized in the life of faith.
The best way to form anyone is to be a living example. It is thus essential that godparents are men and women who are active in their faith and willing to share their faith with their godchild. Too often today, this is the least of the concerns of many parents in their choice of godparents for their children. (The same is even more often true when choosing godparents for marriage!) It is time that we rediscover the true meaning of many of the practices of the Church and disencumber them from the debris that has accumulated around them down through the centuries.
The role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer is important and we must take it seriously. If we fail to do this, we will not only be doing a disservice to ourselves, but also to all those who look up to us for an example of a life of faith. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
How faithfully do I depend upon and surrender my life to the grace of the Holy Spirit? What areas in my life do I need to change so that I will be a better example of Christian living for others?

Come, Holy Spirit, empower me to live the life of a disciple of Jesus, and help me to remove every aspect of my life that is not a good example of faith for others.

St. Thomain, pray for us.
