A Few Good Men

There was a disciple named Tabitha; she was always doing good and helping the poor. – Acts 9:36

Tabitha is a little known character in the Bible. She is described in Acts as always doing good and helping the poor. Every time I read about her, I always recall an incident that happened to me 20 years ago.
I was riding the jeepney from work one night. Since it was late, the rides were full and the only way to go was via sabit (hanging on without a seat).
A gaunt looking guy with worn-out clothes and shoes offered to carry my back pack since I was struggling to hold it at the same time hanging onto the jeepney’s railing.
As we neared my stop, I offered him P50 for his kind gesture, knowing that he could use the extra money. He refused in spite of my insistence. Not everyone would have responded the way he did. Others would have taken the money and it would have been perfectly all right. But this guy genuinely wanted to help, expecting nothing in return. That generous act left a tremendous impact on my life, making me realize that there are still a few good men out there who, like Tabitha, always do good and help others.
I strive to be counted among the few good men. I hope you do, too. Erwin Roceles (erwin_roceles@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
When we help those in need, do we expect anything in return?

Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve You as I should. Teach me to give and not to count the cost. Amen.

St. Peter Chanel, priest and martyr, pray for us.

TODAY’S
LIST
Paul seems to have been the major instigator of persecution of the early Christian communities. With his conversion there is an interlude of peace. The challenges of persecution the Church faces today are equally destructive as those experienced in years gone by. It seems that this is always an element of the experience of Christian faith in at least some places of the world. Let us never lose heart and remember that all things are possible for God, as the evidence of the conversion of Paul attests.

Acts 9:31-42
31 The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit she grew in numbers. 32 As Peter was passing through every region, he went down to the holy ones living in Lydda. 33 There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been confined to bed for eight years, for he was paralyzed. 34 Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed.” He got up at once. 35 And all the inhabitants of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord. 36 Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which translated is Dorcas). She was completely occupied with good deeds and almsgiving. 37 Now during those days she fell sick and died, so after washing her, they laid her out in a room upstairs. 38 Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, “Please come to us without delay.” 39 So Peter got up and went with them. When he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs where all the widows came to him weeping and showing him the tunics and cloaks that Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40 Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to her body and said, “Tabitha, rise up.” She opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. 41 He gave her his hand and raised her up, and when he had called the holy ones and the widows, he presented her alive. 42 This became known all over Joppa, and many came to believe in the Lord.

Psalm 116:12-13, 14-15, 16-17
R: How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good he has done for me?

12 How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good he has done for me? 13 The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the Lord. (R) 14 My vows to the Lord I will pay in the presence of all his people. 15 Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones. (R) 16 O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your handmaid; you have loosed my bonds. 17 To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving, and I will call upon the name of the Lord. (R)

GOSPEL

As Peter proclaims, there truly is no other answer than the person of Jesus and all He offers to the problems and questions of the world. This truth is one that often takes people a lifetime to realize. Let us pray that we all come to it eventually before we die and place our trust and hope in the answers that Jesus offers. The truth of the Gospel is the only answer to all our moral dilemmas.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life.

John 6:60-69
60 Many of the disciples of Jesus who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” 61 Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? 62 What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. 65 And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.” 66 As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer walked with him. 67 Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”

SABBATH

YOU ARE OUR LIFE

We come to the end of a very long discourse of Jesus on the Bread of Life. The people cannot accept this ludicrous language and many begin to stop following the Lord. The language He speaks is of spirit and life. Those who are not of the Spirit cannot accept it. To the human mind, it is intolerable. But with faith in the Son of God, trust in His wisdom, and hope in His promises, it makes perfect sense. This is one of those teachings of Jesus which we simply accept, acknowledging its mystery yet believing in faith the word of the Lord.
Jesus turns to His followers and gives them a choice: to accept the teaching and follow Him, or to leave Him. Peter, the spokesman of the disciples, proclaims Jesus as the Holy One of God. Through the discourse, Jesus has been insistent that His body and blood is real food and real drink. In a mystical way, Jesus changes bread and wine into His body, blood, soul and divinity at the consecration. It is not that we are cannibals, which is what the Jews were alluding to. When we eat the bread and wine of the Eucharist, we are consuming all that is Jesus — His very self. He is the Risen Christ whom we partake of. As St. Augustine said, we receive the Body of Christ to become the Body of Christ. As fire consumes the wood, we are consumed into the person of Jesus. We can say with Paul, “It is no longer I that live but Christ who lives in me.” This is the greatest miracle of the Eucharist. We become altus Christus(other Christs), in the words of St. Thomas Aquinas.
The words that Jesus speaks are words of spirit and life. How we need these words! We are inundated with words that ruin us, hurt and offend. In the Mass, we hear the words of life through the readings and prayers. Sometimes we become distracted but we really need to recapture the beauty of the mystery here before us — Christ Present. He comes to heal, to speak, to forgive and to abide. Let us believe again in the power of the Eucharist. Let us turn again to the Holy One of God, Jesus His Son. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Do you accept the teachings of Jesus in your life? Or do you turn away from Him and stop following Him because of teachings that you cannot accept?

Lord, You have given me life and love to me through Your Word. Fill me and make me whole.
