| | SHARE THE GOOD NEWS “Go and take your place in the temple area, and tell the people everything about this life.” – Acts 5:20 It was the day of the much awaited battle between archrivals Ateneo and La Salle. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get tickets. We couldn’t even watch it on TV because we were on the road traveling back from out of town. I asked my fellow Atenean in the car, “I wonder if we won?” He said nonchalantly, “I’m sure we didn’t. I haven’t received a text.” At the time, it was seldom that Ateneo triumphed over La Salle. So if they did, you’d surely hear that “the eagle has defeated the archer!” That’s the nature of good news. It’s meant to be shared. It’s meant to bless people. In the first reading, an angel instructs the Apostles to go to the temple and share the Good News. Today, this page is my “temple.” I wish I could tell you “everything about this life” — how I’ve been forgiven, healed, delivered and blessed. But I only have 200 words. | | COMPANION | 1ST READING Most people, on escaping from jail, will do their best to hide from the authorities lest they are caught and thrown back behind bars. What did the Early Christians do? They did not hide. They did not live in fear of the authorities. They went back out to the middle of the streets and cities proclaiming the Good News to all who would listen. We need more of this courage and commitment today. Let us pray once again for the outpouring of the Spirit of God. Acts 5:17-26 17 The high priest rose up and all his companions, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and, filled with jealousy, 18 laid hands upon the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But during the night, the angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said, 20 “Go and take your place in the temple area, and tell the people everything about this life.” 21 When they heard this, they went to the temple early in the morning and taught. When the high priest and his companions arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin, the full senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the jail to have them brought in. 22 But the court officers who went did not find them in the prison, so they came back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked and the guards stationed outside the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 When the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this report, they were at a loss about them, as to what this would come to. 25 Then someone came in and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are in the temple area and are teaching the people.” 26 Then the captain and the court officers went and brought them in, but without force, because they were afraid of being stoned by the people. P S A L M Psalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 R: The Lord hears the cry of the poor. 1 [2] I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. 2 [3] Let my soul glory in the Lord; the lowly will hear me and be glad. (R) 3 [4] Glorify the Lord with me, let us together extol his name. 4 [5] I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. (R) 5 [6] Look to him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame. 6 [7] When the poor one called out, the Lord heard, and from all his distress he saved him. (R) 7 [8] The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. 8 [9] Taste and see how good the Lord is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him. (R) GOSPEL God sent Jesus to redeem, and not to condemn, humanity. It is in the truth of this reality that we discover the depth of God’s love for us. We deserved to be condemned for our sins. We deserved to be abandoned by God. However, this is not how God saw things and so, motivated by His great love for us, He sends Jesus to redeem us. How often have we thanked God for His love? St. Alphonsus reminds us to meditate on the crucifixion every day so that we will never forget the depth of God’s love for us. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life. John 3:16-21 16 “God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. 21 But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.” 1st READING 2nd READING GOSPEL PSALM LIST think: How often have we thanked God for His love? | | SABBATH | FROM TRUTH COMES THE LIGHT An altar boy came rushing into church one morning just before Mass. I was praying my breviary using my iPod Touch. He looked at my iPod, wanting to know how much time he had left. By instinct, I had him look at my watch and told him he had about four minutes to spare. As he disappeared into the sacristy, it dawned on me that I was a hopeless digital migrant foraging into the world of digital natives who simply loathed things like wrist watches for they were simply single-function devices. I caught myself in my analog frame of mind and realized that kids now need no wrist watches. Their minds all but rewired digitally, they don’t watch the time the way oldies do. Their multi-function digital gadgets keep time for them, to remind them of their next appointment and so on. With the digital world, a new form of darkness has set in — the culture of isolation. Yes, in a world of social networking, the new darkness of isolation has taken the whole world by storm. I have always been fascinated by the texting culture in the country. It never fails to amuse and amaze me how entire families could see movies together, only to get out of the cinema and sit down to a meal at a restaurant, and do nothing else but text their time away! Togetherness and physical proximity do not necessarily make for meaningful connectedness. The Gospel is good news anywhere, anytime. Today’s passage reminds us of two interrelated things: truth and light. The first stands for acceptance of what is. It means being aware of where we are and of the circumstances that surround us. But making changes after accepting what is, is what the second calls for. It means deciding what to do on the basis of what we know. Once upon a time, we came to acknowledge the truth about us through a solid examination of conscience. But after acknowledging sinfulness, we are called to do more. That is called conversion.
