EASTER SUNDAY
8
A Life of Contradiction

Seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. – Colossians 3:1

I met Jude and came face-to-face with what it meant to live a life of contradiction.
Jude is Catholic, a bachelor, and a professional. He comes from a landed family that owns businesses related to construction, financing and real estate. In spite of his good fortune from a successful career, a sizable inheritance and regular share of dividends from the family businesses, he is thrifty. He maintains a spartan lifestyle, lives in a rundown apartment and drives a low-end car.
At first, I admired this simplicity as a positive sign of detachment from the trappings of the material world. Until I discovered that, on the contrary, this was part of an incessant objective to create more wealth. He engaged in the 5-6 lending scheme targeted at rank and file employees, had unethical dealings for extra income, paid low salaries and bribed to save on taxes.
God is the source of our time, talent, and treasure. To whom much is given, much is expected. While I find no wrong in expanding our resources, it should be done in a moral (and legitimate manner) and in the context of having more to give. Marie Franco (mariefranco_pie@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Money can blind us. It can enslave us. It can destroy us. But money can also be our means to fulfill His Word here on earth.

O Lord, life here on earth is full of temptations. Send our guardian angels to constantly remind us that Your way is the only way to everlasting joy.

St. Julie Billiart, pray for us.

1ST READING

The Gospel is centered around the resurrection of Jesus, which we celebrate today. As we read the early expressions of the Gospel in the Acts of the Apostles, we see how Peter first situates Jesus in relation to the Old Testament, then talks about the ministry of Jesus before telling us what the effect of His passion, death and resurrection really is. Jesus’ mission is not something that was planned at the last minute. God set it in motion a long time before this.

Acts 10:34, 37-43
34 Peter proceeded to speak and said: 37 “You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39 We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. 40 This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, 41 not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43 To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.”

P S A L M

Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23
R: This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. 2 Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.” (R) 16 “The right hand of the Lord has struck with power; the right hand of the Lord is exalted. 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.” (R) 22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 23 By the Lord has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. (R)

2ND READING

The nature of the gift of salvation is enormous. There are many ways in which to view it and just as many ways in which to interpret it. The basics are the same, namely that our sins have been forgiven and we are offered the gift of eternal life. Whatever we do when applying the gift of salvation to the world, let us always remember the basics. Otherwise, we will be anchorless in a very stormy world.

Colossians 3:1-4 (or 1 Corinthians 5:6-8)
1 Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.

GOSPEL

The discovery of the empty tomb is a bit of a no-brainer when it comes to charges against the veracity of the claims to the resurrection of Jesus. There were guards outside the tomb and so there is literally no way that His disciples, a motley crew of a few simple men, could have masterminded such a coup. Let us not give such a scenario a second thought and get on with proclaiming the truth of what happened — Jesus is no longer in the tomb; He has risen from the dead.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed; let us then feast with joy in the Lord.

John 20:1-9 (or Luke 24:13-35)
1 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” 3 So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. 4 They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; 5 he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. 6 When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, 7 and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. 8 Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. 9 For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

SABBATH
Jesus is Risen

“Jesus is Risen!” is the cry of an Easter people. There is nothing more important to us than this. If Jesus has not risen from the dead, then the Gospel is emptied of its power and our lives of discipleship are meaningless in the equation of eternal life. We may be good people, but good is not enough to merit eternal life. Only the offer of salvation from Jesus, through His death and resurrection, can merit us eternal life. It is important for us to deepen our appreciation of this truth. The more we believe it, the more we will be able to pay the price of discipleship.
Jesus is not interested in lip service. This is why He came in person to redeem us. He came to reveal to us the true nature of love — the demands love makes and the consequences of these demands — for those who wish to be numbered among the saints of God. For 2,000 years, God has worked with a people who, while at times very pliant to His will and love, more often than not demonstrated a remarkable ability to reject God’s offer of love and set out according to their own wisdom.
We all have to learn to submit our wills to that of God if we want the best for our lives. Nothing and no one can force us to do this, but there are consequences if we choose not to obey God’s will. One of these consequences will be the failure to enter into eternal life.
Today we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, which God wants us all to experience. If we truly open our hearts to the fullness of the promise of Jesus’ resurrection, it will be virtually impossible for us not to accept the gift He offers and so enter into a life of discipleship. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Is your heart open to the truth and power of the resurrection? How willing are you to follow God’s will for your life?

Jesus, You have revealed the Father’s love to us in unequivocal fashion. Help me to surrender my life to You and follow wherever You lead me.
