| | A Sudden Engagement “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts?” – Luke 24:38 Have you ever experienced having mixed emotions because of an answered prayer? Do you remember why you were at a loss on what to feel at that moment? “Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!” Like Jesus’ disciples, I was incredulous with joy and amazement as Fr. Jun Lingad read the Gospel. Did I hear him right? Seeing my boyfriend beaming from ear to ear, I concluded that I heard the Gospel loud and clear. I was stunned. Just before the Mass, my boyfriend had asked me if he was already the bridegroom I was waiting for. He was referring to the title of a book I wrote before we met, When My Bridegroom Comes. I felt that it was too early to answer his question. So I told him that I would ask God first and pray for an answer, starting at the Mass we were about to attend. I didn’t expect that God would answer immediately. Thank God for His grace that enabled me to overcome my doubts and embrace God’s perfect plan. The following day, my boyfriend and I got engaged. | | COMPANION | 1ST READING It is not just those physically involved in the death of Jesus 2,000 years ago who have to repent. Every man and woman alive needs to repent of sin and believe in God so that our sins will be wiped away. The Gospel is for everyone and so the need to repent of sin is universal. It is good for us to reflect on these basic truths of the faith once in a while to be reminded of their centrality to our lives. Acts 3:13-15, 17-19 13 Peter said to the people: “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus whom you handed over and denied in Pilate’s presence, when he had decided to release him. 14 You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses. 17 Now I know, brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did; 18 but God has thus brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer. 19 Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away.” P S A L M Psalm 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9 R: Lord, let your face shine on us. 1 [2] When I call, answer me, O my just God, you who relieve me when I am in distress; have pity on me, and hear my prayer! (R) 8 [9] As soon as I lie down, I fall peacefully asleep, for you alone, O Lord, bring security to my dwelling. (R) 2ND READING Today’s reading reminds us of the need for conversion. It is time for us to stop sinning. Yes, we are weak and this command is virtually impossible to live out. However, it is not impossible by God’s grace and it is time for the full effect of the death and resurrection of Jesus to be made manifest in our lives. 1 John 2:1-5 1 My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one. 2 He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. 3 The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments. 4 Those who says, “I know him,” but does not keep his commandments are liars, and the truth is not in them. 5 But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. This is the way we may know that we are in union with him. GOSPEL One of the great things about God and the life of faith is that there is always more for us to learn. We will never exhaust the bountiful wonders and blessings of God for us. Let us never fall prey to that ruse of the devil that would cause us to close ourselves to the possibility of further encountering and moving deeper in our faith experience. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Lord Jesus, open the Scriptures to us; make our hearts burn while you speak to us. Luke 24:35-48 35 The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way, and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. 36 While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 37 But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38 Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” 40 And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of baked fish; 43 he took it and ate it in front of them. 44 He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 46 And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day 47 and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.” 1st READING 2nd READING LIST think: The Gospel is for everyone and so, the need to repent of sin is universal. | | SABBATH | TOUCH ME AND SEE! We Catholics live in a world of signs. Signs are basically material, ordinary things that point to spiritual and extraordinary realities. Andrew Greeley calls them all as part of the “Catholic imagination.” Objects such as statues, water, oil, bread, wine, candles, incense, and so many others, make up this rich world of sacramentality. They are accessible to touch, smell, taste and hearing. But they point to a whole new world distinct from and higher than the world we are used to. As a little boy, I looked forward to getting sick. Funny, but I did at times want to be sick because I got special attention from my grandmother. Apart from some special treats that she would get me from the neighborhood store, the most awaited one was her caring touch. She would gently rub my head with her gnarled hands and massage my body all over. In retrospect, I don’t know exactly at this point whether it was the Medicol (or Cortal) or the natural resiliency of a child that healed me fast enough, but I do know one thing. The healing process was hastened by the loving touch of someone who made me see not my sickness but the love that ultimately healed me of other things worse than a raging fever. Our loving and saving God touches us in both the natural and supernatural planes. This happened when He became one like us. This still happens when we partake of this whole complex of signs that the sacraments of salvation are. We get to the level of the supernatural by passing through the world of the natural. The Gospel passage today invites us to do what we often take for granted: to go and touch the Lord the way He wanted us to — approach the sacraments, be healed by His loving forgiveness in confession, reach out and touch Him bodily, sacramentally, spiritually and truly in the Holy Eucharist, hear His mystical Body, the Church, and rally behind Her teachings.
