God’s hand

For the hand of the Lord was with him. – Luke 1:66

Observe the people around you.
1. Bo Sanchez - he preaches the Word of God at The Feast thrice every Sunday, established Anawim Lay Missions for the abandoned elderly, set up the LOJ Counseling Center, founded the Light of Jesus Family, and many other organizations. He lives a simple life, loves his wife and is a great father. We can say that the hand of the Lord is with him.
2. Pope Benedict - he inspires and leads billions of people around the globe. We say that the hand of the Lord is with him.
3. Fr. Fernando Suarez - he heals the sick and brings hope to the poor. We say that the hand of the Lord is with him.
4. Milagros R. Morelos - my mother, a widow and a mother of eight, a grandmother of 37, great-grandmother of 17 grandchildren, prays daily for each member of her family, raised her family well according to Christian values. I say, the hand of the Lord is with her.
5. Put your own name here and list the things that you do for your family, friends, community, company, etc — and the Lord will say, “My hand is upon you.” Wherever and whatever we do, we can ask God’s hand to be upon us so that we can bless the world. Hermie Morelos (hrm9224@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
How can you inspire and bless your world?

Jesus, let Your hand be upon everything I do today and always.

COMPANION

1st READING

Each of us will have to be purified from all the sins we have committed and the consequences of those sins. We can begin the process now through a life of penance and discipleship and so work at not increasing our sins. It would be very sensible to do the best we can to limit the damage we do in our lives as it will obviously lessen the need for purification and penance.

Malachi 3:1-4, 23-24
1 Thus says the LORD GOD: Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me; and suddenly there will come to the temple the LORD whom you seek, and the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. 2 But who will endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears? For he is like the refiner’s fire, or like the fuller’s lye. 3 He will sit refining and purifying [silver], and he will purify the sons of Levi, refining them like gold or like silver that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD. 4 Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem will please the LORD, as in days of old, as in years gone by. 23 Lo, I will send you Elijah, the prophet, before the day of the LORD comes, the great and terrible day, 24 to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with doom.

Psalm 25:4-5ab, 8-9, 10, 14
R: Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand.
4 Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths, 5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. (R) 8 Good and upright is the LORD; thus he shows sinners the way. 9 He guides the humble to justice, he teaches the humble his way. (R) 10 All the paths of the LORD are kindness and constancy toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees. 14 The friendship of the LORD is with those who fear him, and his covenant, for their instruction. (R)

G O S P E L

The story of the conception and birth of John the Baptist is very instructive as far as an understanding of discipleship goes. It shows us the two extremes in the person of Zechariah, the father of John. He first disbelieves the word of the angel and is struck dumb; then he demonstrates belief through his obedience in giving John that name. He thus receives again the ability to speak. Obedience commands the blessing of God, whereas disobedience can lead to all sorts of suffering.

Luke 1:57-66
57 When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. 59 When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, 60 but his mother said in reply, “No. He will be called John.” 61 But they answered her, “There is no one among your relatives who has this name.” 62 So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. 63 He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,” and all were amazed. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God. 65 Then fear came upon all their neighbors, and all these matters were discussed throughout the hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, “What, then, will this child be?” For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.

my reflections
t h i n k : Obedience commands the blessing of God whereas disobedience can lead to all sorts of suffering.

SABBATH

COME , O EMMANUEL

Finally, in this last of the “O Antiphons,” we call on the Lord Jesus: “O Emmanuel (God with us), our King and Lawgiver, the Expected of nations and their Savior: Come, and save us, O Lord our God!” Reading this final antiphon gives a feeling that a climax has indeed come. These past days we have been invoking God with various terms and titles, but now we are using nothing less than His very name: Emmanuel, God with us. It reveals to us the kind
heart of God — how He longs to bewith us, to be one like us, to be one of us. There are, in fact, four other titles in this last antiphon, but somehow the name Emmanuel surpasses them all.
Our Gospel reading today has some discussion about the giving of names. This is of course during the episode of the birth and circumcision of John the Baptizer. For the friends and relatives of Elizabeth and Zechariah, drama quickly turned to gladness and rejoicing. At the same time there was a sense of awe, foreboding and mystery. “What, then, will this child be?” people asked of John.
We who have the benefit of seeing things in retrospect know the answer, of course. Through it all, we know that God keeps His promises, that God is always in action. He is definitely the Lord of History, the Lord of our lives.
May our hearts be always disposed to pray these “O Antiphons” sincerely and confidently — not only during these designated days before Christmas, but in whatever instances of our lives when we wish to implore the God who comes, the God who is with us.Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
How much importance do you give our Lord Jesus on ordinary days? Every day should be Christmas day!

Every day I shall call on You, Lord, and bless Your Holy name.

St. Dagobert II, pray for us.
