GOD’S SHOW MUST GO ON!

Jesus replied, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard...” – Luke 7:22

John the Baptist boldly declared about Jesus: “Behold the Lamb of God.” Now, imprisoned and with his life threatened, he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?”
Jesus, didn’t reply, “John! You seem to doubt your own prophecy. I’m the One!” Jesus, in His wisdom, pointed to the evidence of God’s work through Him: “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor” (Luke 7:22).
I reflected on this Gospel and realized two important things:
• Humanity. Like John, when I’m on fire in the Holy Spirit, I proclaim passionately who Jesus is, while in moments of spiritual dryness would doubt God’s work in me.
• God’s grace. God will continue His miracles with or without me. Therefore, I must be where God’s action is! I must always say “yes” to Jesus’ call.
I therefore conclude: Embrace your humanity and work with God’s grace. There is no stopping Him. God’s show must go on! Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
“God loves you the way you are; but He does not want you to stay the way you are; He wants you to be like Jesus!” (Max Lucado)

Lord, I embrace the sinner and the saint in me. Thank You for redeeming the first and anointing the second.

COMPANION

1st READING

Isaiah seems to be trying to assure us that God is in control because He created the world and it is reasonable to assume that He knows what He is doing. Maybe this argument would not work for a human being, for example those who created the atomic bomb, but for God it should hold true. There are times when there can be incredible confusion in our lives, but we need to believe that God knows what is happening and trust that He will show us the way through it.

Isaiah 45:6c-8, 18, 21c-25
6 I am the LORD, there is no other; 7 I form the light, and create the darkness, I make well-being and create woe; I, the LORD, do all these things. 8 Let justice descend, O heavens, like dew from above, like gentle rain let the skies drop it down. Let the earth open and salvation bud forth; let justice also spring up! I, the LORD, have created this. 18 For thus says the LORD, the creator of the heavens, who is God, the designer and maker of the earth who established it, not creating it to be a waste, but designing it to be lived in I am the LORD, and there is no other. 21 Who announced this from the beginning and foretold it from of old? Was it not I, the LORD, besides whom there is no other God? There is no just and saving God but me. 22 Turn to me and be safe, all you ends of the earth, for I am God; there is no other! 23 By myself I swear, uttering my just decree and my unalterable word to me every knee shall bend; by me every tongue shall swear, 24 saying, “Only in the LORD are just deeds and power. Before him in shame shall come all who vent their anger against him. 25 In the LORD shall be the vindication and the glory of all the descendants of Israel.”

P S A L M

Psalm 85:9ab, 10, 11-12, 13-14
R: Let the clouds rain down the Just One, and the earth bring forth a Savior.
8 [9] I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD-for he proclaims peace to his people. 9 [10] Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land. (R) 10 [11] Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. 11 [12] Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. (R) 12 [13] The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. 13 [14] Justice shall walk before him, and salvation, along the way of his steps. (R)

John is clearly a man of humility. I wonder how tempted he was to ignore Jesus’ ministry and focus on his own? Thank God, he did not do this. He stands as an example for us today, particularly those with large ministries, of what it means to be a minister of the Gospel — namely, to give one’s life in the service of the Good News and to direct all the glory to God.

Luke 7:18b-23
18 At that time, John summoned two of his disciples 19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” 20 When the men came to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?’ ” 21 At that time he cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits; he also granted sight to many who were blind. 22 And he said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. 23 And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.”

Hosea 11-14
my reflections

SABBATH

AFFIRMATION AND ASSURANCE FROM GOD

As we realize from the halfway mark of this month of December, we are drawing nearer to Christmas. Our twin Advent guides in the persons of Isaiah (once again today) and John the Baptizer continue to help us in our preparation.
Through the mouth of His prophet, the almighty God is assuring us with much conviction: “I am the Lord, there is no other . . . . Turn to me and be safe, all you ends of the earth, for I am God; there is no other!” (The double affirmation serves to get the message across even more forcefully.)
The Gospel, in the meantime, is a rather unusual glimpse into the person of John the Baptizer. Perhaps because of disillusionment and suffering (as he was already imprisoned by Herod at this time), healso fell to doubting the identity and mission of Jesus. And so John sent two of his disciples as emissaries to Jesus, to verify with the Lord whether He was indeed the Messiah. In a way, it was understandable. And also, we see that it is simply in consistency with John’s characteristic candor and frankness that he asked for some kind of reassurance.
Affirmation and assurance: these are two things which all of us need in life. No one among us is so callous as to no longer have any need for a friendly tap on the shoulder, or a congratulatory word to know that we have done well. Or even a fraternal correction or a sincere rebuke, for that matter.
From the Lord God, we can obtain both, in fact. Perhaps we should think about that for our Christmas wish lists these days. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
God constantly gives us assurance and affirmation through the written Word that He is present in our lives. Do you believe this by heart? How do you assure and affirm others?

Teach me, Lord, to be generous to my neighbors with words and gestures of assurance and affirmation.

St. Nino, pray for us.
