The virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Immanuel, which means, “God with us.” – Matthew 1:23

Robert Jastrow, director of the Mount Wilson Institute, and his fellow scientists devoted their lives to making contact with extraterrestrial beings that are “superior to us... not only technically, but perhaps spiritually and morally.” After spending millions of dollars in a 40-year project, the search still continues for “an alien civilization billions of years old, who will be able to tell us why we are here and how to overcome our destructive tendencies.” This fear that humanity might destroy itself, as well as the innate desire for meaning in life, could have been the soul for the many popular books and movies about ETs.
In his book Show Me God, Fred Heeren says of this interest in alien beings: “People want a higher companion, but not too high.... People are looking for an intermediate... but someone who can still identify with us as a fellow creature.” Now I know why God chose the name Immanuel.
Our search in the wrong places for meaning and answer ends in His name. I hope we won’t miss it this time. Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Do you know anyone searching for meaning and answers for their life? Bring them to the Immanuel.

Immanuel, come to my life this season in a way I have never known and experienced You before.

1st READING

If you want to know what sort of lifestyle pleases the Lord, the answer is very simple — a life of integrity and truth. Pope John Paul II was constantly calling us back to such a lifestyle and Benedict XVI has not let up on this call. The history of Judaism and Christianity is full of examples of the faithful few, the men and women of integrity, being sources of renewal and faithfulness in the life of our traditions. Are you a part of this solution or a part of the problem?

Jeremiah 23:5-8
5 Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David; as king he shall reign and govern wisely, he shall do what is just and right in the land. 6 In his days Judah shall be saved, Israel shall dwell in security. This is the name they give him, “The LORD our justice.” 7 Therefore, the days will come, says the LORD, when they shall no longer say, “As the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt”; 8 but rather, “As the LORD lives, who brought the descendants of the house of Israel up from the land of the north” — and from all the lands to which I banished them; they shall again live on their own land.

Psalm 72:1-2, 12-13, 18-19
R: Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever.
1 O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son; 2 he shall govern your people with justice and your afflicted ones with judgment. (R) 12 For he shall rescue the poor man when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. 13 He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the poor he shall save. (R) 18 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous deeds. 19 And blessed forever be his glorious name; may the whole earth be filled with his glory. (R)

Honor is something that is obviously important to Joseph. Perhaps he was aware of the purity of his betrothed and thus could not see how she could have possibly betrayed his love? Whatever the case, he refuses to denounce her and stand in judgment of her. Perhaps we need to learn to give people the benefit of the doubt a bit more often than we do rather than rushing in to rash judgments that may not be fully justified?

Matthew 1:18-25
18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. 20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. 21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” 24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. 25 He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

SABBATH

COME , O GOD AND RULER

Next, we implore the Lord: “O Adonai (God of the Covenant) and Ruler of the house of Israel, You appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush, and on Mount Sinai gave him Your Law: Come, and with an outstretched arm redeem us!”
The Old Testament references are, of course, clear and familiar. Of old Yahweh appeared in the burning bush, and in the fullness of time He appeared on earth in human flesh. Even now we are at the point of celebrating that appearance with joy. On Sinai He gave the Old Law amid lightning and thunder; we now are about to stand in silent awe before the crib of Bethlehem.
We beseech the Lord to come and save us with His outstretched arm. But He can only do so on the condition that we unite our will to His. All our entreaties are in vain without this crucial prerequisite.
A perfect example of this is what we read in our Gospel passage today, about Joseph. Thanks to his trusting obedience to God, things were put back on course. Certainly it was more than just a case of salvaging a woeful situation, stemming from a “maling akala” (a mistaken presumption) on the part of Joseph’s engagement and impending marriage to Mary. The whole thing was a manifestation of the almighty power of God, holding fort in the midst of human travails.
Many of us will in one way or another identify with the story of Joseph, but not too many of us will perhaps realize in our own lives the same divine intervention that happened to him. It need not be limited only to a privileged few like Joseph. The possibility is always there for each and every one of us —thanks to Yahweh Adonai. He indeed is Lord and Ruler of our lives. If we are but open to God’s workings, if we but obey His will, surely He will act with His outstretched arm. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
How many times have you called on God to help you, yet have refused to obey His commandments?

Humble me, Lord, and lead me to obey Your will for You know what is best for me.

St. Moses, pray for us.
