JUST LET GO!

“Whoever believes in me will never thirst. But I told you that although you have seen me, you do not believe.” – John 6:35-36

When a newborn’s eyesight fully develops around the fourth month, only then can the baby see clearly. In the meantime, the baby relies heavily on his sense of hearing. For one who has lived for nine months in the security of the womb hearing only muffled sounds, the noise of the real world can be frightening. When a baby is alone in his crib hearing lots of strange sounds, he becomes afraid and starts to cry. But when he hears the soothing voice of his mother followed by the sound of the shaking of milk in a bottle, he knows that in a little while, warm arms will scoop him up and his hunger will be satisfied.
“Seeing is believing” holds no water for newborns. In their helplessness, all they can do is to trust in the one who loves them.
I believe this is the earthly model that God has installed into our life so that our limited minds would be able to understand how He loves and cares for us. Jesus had to remind us that if our earthly parents do not withhold any good thing from us, how much more will our heavenly Father give us all good things?
It’s time we let go of all our doubts and just believe. Ronna Ledesma (ronnaledesma@email.com)

REFLECTION:
To believe is to see.

Jesus, help my unbelief!

COMPANION

1st READING

We hear here how damaging the fervor of Saul for his faith is for the nascent Christian Church. He is throwing many of the believers into jail and putting all sorts of pressure on them to conform to his beliefs and to abandon faith in Jesus Christ. This will soon change with one of the more remarkable conversion stories in the history of the Church. None of us are ‘hopeless cases.’ If Paul can come to faith, anybody can.

Acts 8:1b-8
1 There broke out a severe persecution of the church in Jerusalem, and all were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 Devout men buried Stephen and made a loud lament over him. 3 Saul, meanwhile, was trying to destroy the church; entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment. 4 Now those who had been scattered went about preaching the word. 5 Thus Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them. 6 With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip when they heard it and saw the signs he was doing. 7 For unclean spirits, crying out in a loud voice, came out of many possessed people, and many paralyzed and crippled people were cured. 8 There was great joy in that city.

Psalm 66:1-3a, 4-5, 6-7a
R: Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
1 Shout joyfully to God, all you on earth, 2 sing praise to the glory of his name; proclaim his glorious praise. 3 Say to God, “How tremendous are your deeds!” (R) 4 “Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you, sing praise to your name!” 5 Come and see the works of God, his tremendous deeds among the children of Adam. (R) 6 He has changed the sea into dry land; through the river they passed on foot; therefore let us rejoice in him. 7 He rules by his might forever. (R)

G O S P E L

The key phrase in this text for me is in verse 39 where Jesus tells us that this is all “the will of the One who sent me.” Jesus does not seek to glorify Himself. He simply wants us to know that all He says and does is part of a plan that has existed since the beginning of time — a plan that is designed to draw all things and people into God’s grace and love.

John 6:35-40
35 Jesus said to the crowds, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. 36 But I told you that although you have seen me, you do not believe. 37 Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, 38  because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. 39 And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”

my reflections
t h i n k : Jesus wants us to know that all He says and does is part of a plan that has existed since the beginning of time — a plan that is designed to draw all things and people into God’s grace and love.

SABBATH

JESUS HAS COME DOWN FROM HEAVEN

One of the unique claims of Jesus is that He has come down from heaven. No other prophet can make this claim. Implicit in this claim is that He is the only one who has seen and personally knows the Father (who is in heaven). Thus, the revelation of the Father’s nature that Jesus brings is far greater than any other revelation either before Him or after Him. The understanding that Jesus is one with the Father (clear very early on in developing Christian theology) further expresses the depth of knowledge of the Father that Jesus has. We can be sure that the knowledge Jesus gives us of the Father is of prime importance.
Jesus rather cryptically tells us that the Father desires that “He lose nothing of what has been given to Him.” Perhaps Jesus is referring here to His identity with the Father? In becoming human, Jesus loses nothing of His divinity. In fact, it is precisely this mix of divine and human that makes Him capable of bringing salvation to all and thus giving a second meaning to the phrase we are looking at — that is, no one is outside the ambit of the work of salvation. The Father has sent Jesus to bring salvation to all mankind and thus the desire of the Father is that all people be saved, that no one be lost to Him.
The mission of Jesus is multilayered. There are dimensions to it that are almost lost in the mystery of the depth of God’s love for us. John tries to put into words something of this mystery but cannot fully capture its whole meaning. Even the disciples of Jesus fail to fully understand the implications of His preaching. We need to constantly be open to the Spirit of God bringing enough clarity to our understanding so that we will not be working completely in the dark regarding our own faith response. Jesus’ mission and the nature of His relationship with the Father is not an easy thing to fully understand or explain. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
What is my understanding of the relationship between Jesus and His Father? It is more than that of father and son because the two are one — equal in all things, though different in their missions.

Holy Spirit, help me to understand the love the Father has for me so that I will be better able to respond to it.

St. Beuno, pray for us.
