OBEY BEFOREYOU COMPLAIN

“Find.. Cast... Bring... Come... Tend... Feed... Follow me.” – John 21:6 -19

During our ROTC days, we followed the rule, “Obey before you complain.” The idea was that “officers knew better” and we were just to follow even if we didn’t understand.
I often resort to a similar rule with our kids. When I ask Iani to read or Tesa to practice writing, they ask “Why, Daddy?” I admonish them saying, “Please obey first before you ask why.” And then proceed to explain my reasons. Sometimes. Jesus gave orders to His followers, many times without explaining. Cast the net. Find something. Bring some of the fish. Come have breakfast. Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep. In many instances, the apostles just carried out His orders. His authority surpassed that of a military officer or a parent. Even demons obeyed His commands. But the most profound order that Jesus gave us is: Follow me.
We know we should. We even know why. Despite our knowledge, in our hearts and mind and actions, we choose to disobey. Even when we know the consequences of our disobedience.
Obedience to God should be a way of life, not a passing whim or a matter of convenience.Jun Asis (mabuting.balita@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Resolve to obey God in all things, in all ways, all the time.

Lord, help me to obey and not complain, to follow and not ask why. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The saints recognize that it is a privilege to suffer for the name of Jesus and His mission as it means they are being conformed to the witness of His life. This does not mean that persecution and suffering are good, but that God, in His infinite power, can use them for His own good — our purification, the proclamation of the Gospel, intercession for others and so on. Let us never be afraid of being purified by sharing in the sufferings of Christ.

Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41
27 When the captain and the court officers had brought them in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest questioned them, 28 “We gave you strict orders did we not? to stop teaching in that name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man’s blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles said in reply, “We must obey God rather than men. 30 The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. 31 God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins. 32 We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit that God has given to those who obey him.” 40 After recalling the apostles, they had them flogged, ordered them to stop speaking in the name of Jesus, and dismissed them. 41 So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.

Psalm 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11-12, 13 (2a)
R: I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
1 [2] I will extol you, O LORD, for you drew me clear and did not let my enemies rejoice over me. 3 [4] O LORD, you brought me up from the nether world; you preserved me from among thosegoing down into the pit. (R) 4 [5] Sing praise to the LORD, you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. 5 [6] For his anger lasts but a moment; a lifetime, his good will. At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with the dawn, rejoicing. (R) 10 [11] Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper.” 11 [12] You changed my mourning into dancing; 12 [13] O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks. (R)

2nd READING

Our eternal focus in heaven will be the glory of God. Praise and worship will be a way of life. There will neither be any distractions nor hindrances to our seeing and understanding the full glory of the Lord. Let us begin to do this now on earth by offering our lives as a living sacrifice of praise, worship and service to God.

Revelation 5:11-14
11 I John, looked and heard the voices of many angels who surrounded the throne and the living creatures and the elders. They were countless in number, 12 and they cried out in a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing.” 13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, everything in the universe, cry out: “To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever.” 14 The four living creatures answered, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshipped.

G O S P E L

Jesus is not initially recognized by those to whom He was closest when He rose from the dead. Why is that? The resurrection must have changed Jesus, at least to a certain degree. The resurrection will change us all! We are not the same when we come into faith in Jesus; imagine how different we will be when we experience our own resurrection. We are reflecting upon mysteries that we will never fully understand yet called to fully experience.

John 21:1-19
1 At that time, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. 2 Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” 6 So he said to them, “Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. 7 So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. 9 When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead. 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

SABBATH

PUTTING ON MY OWN BELT OR NOT?

In the longer version of today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus speaking to Peter about how he will not have control of where his life will eventually lead in that the Holy Spirit will lead him in directions he would rather not walk and to places he would rather not go. To Peter’s credit, when we examine his life, it seems that this prophecy indeed comes true. Peter had an unenviable position in leading up the early Church. His only model of leadership is Jesus and he is an uneducated man. Yet, for over 30 years of persecution from both Jewish and Roman authorities, he stands firm in the Gospel truth and encourages the fledgling Church to do the same.
Perhaps it is in adversity that the Church tends to thrive best. Persecution seems to bring the best out of the Church. It is in good times that the Church gets lax and our spirituality begins to take on worldly values.
We should pray for the grace to retain the edge of the Gospel in our lives. Whether we are being persecuted or not, we need to submit ourselves to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. We need to ensure that we live fully, in all that we say and do, all the truths and values of the Gospel. The beginning of any compromise to the truths of the Gospel is the beginning of death in our lives. This can never be a valid option for either the Church as a whole or any of us as individuals. The temptations of Jesus are good starting points to look for compromise in our lives. Jesus clearly knows what His mission is and no promise of wealth or power or anything else is going to deflect Him from His true course.
We need to ensure that we always listen to the voice of the Spirit of God, and not the spirit of the world, so that we will remain faithful to the truth and not compromise our beliefs with any of the false teachings and philosophies of our time. It is Jesus who we follow, not the world.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Is there compromise in my life with respect to any of the teachings of the Church? If there is, it is time we pray for the grace to rectify the situation.

Holy Spirit, lead and guide me in the ways of truth and righteousness and let me reject the ways of the world for the distractions and lies that they are.

St. Laserian, pray for us.
