MESSAGE IN A BODY

But during the night, the angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out... – Acts 5:19

Twenty seven years ago, I was healed and saved all because someone took the time to share the message of Jesus with me.
In today’s reading, the high priest had the apostle Peter thrown in jail for preaching that the man whom they had just crucified was the Messiah sent by God. He probably thought that killing Jesus would stop whatever He was sent to do. But now, His apostles were continuing to spread His teachings and they were even displaying more miracles, signs and wonders as they preached in His Name.
If death did not stop the message of Jesus from being preached, then neither will the jail cell. An angel opened the jail and commanded the apostles to “go to the Temple and give the people the message of life!”
All of us carry that message of life within us. Yup, even that grumpy saleslady or your stingy old landlord. That message was meant to be shared, not kept. When the apostles shared and preached it, thousands were healed and saved in one day alone!
The message is simple: God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.  It’s time to share it and touch another soul. Ronna Ledesma (ronnaledesma@email.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you giving others the message of life?

Lord, let me live to proclaim Your message to the world.

COMPANION

1st READING

Arrests, persecution and hardship were the way of life for the Early Church. It is difficult for us to understand how this would be like since we live in a basically Catholic country, the Philippines. Having said this, what we need to appreciate more is how the apostles remained committed to proclaiming the Gospel.

Acts 5:17-26
17 The high priest rose up and all his companions, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and, filled with jealousy, 18 laid hands upon the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But during the night, the angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said, 20 “Go and take your place in the temple area, and tell the people everything about this life.” 21 When they heard this, they went to the temple early in the morning and taught. When the high priest and his companions arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin, the full senate of the Israelites, and sent to the jail to have them brought in. 22 But the court officers who went did not find them in the prison, so they came back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked and the guards stationed outside the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 When they heard this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were at a loss about them, as to what this would come to. 25 Then someone came in and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are in the temple area and are teaching the people.” 26 Then the captain and the court officers went and brought them in, but without force, because they were afraid of being stoned by the people.

P S A L M

Psalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
R: The Lord hears the cry of the poor.
1 [2] I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. 2 [3] Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad. (R) 3 [4] Glorify the LORD with me, let us together extol his name. 4 [5] I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. (R) 5 [6] Look to him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame. 6 [7] When the poor one called out, the LORD heard, and from all his distress he saved him. (R) 7 [8] The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. 8 [9] Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him. (R)

G O S P E L

This is the ever famous text about the love of God for us. It is central to the Gospel message, so we can never spend too much time meditating upon it. Let us always remember to reflect upon God’s love for us at least once a day so that this knowledge will accompany us every moment of our lives.

John 3:16-21
16 God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. 21 But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.

SABBATH

PROMPTED BY JEALOUSY

Jealousy is a lousy motivator at the best of times. In a rather contrived sense it can sometimes be said to be a good motivator if it seeks to inspire a person to draw the best out of themselves in the pursuit of a particular goal, as long as his or her actions do not negatively impinge on others. However, rarely will jealousy lead to a good result. It is better to avoid jealousy at all costs and seek far purer emotions for motivation in our lives.
St. Francis of Assisi speaks of how envy and jealousy are sins against the Holy Spirit. For him, they are the unforgiveable sin of Mark 3:27-28. Why does he believe this? I think it is because he sees envy and jealousy as the refusal to rejoice in the way the Holy Spirit has given gifts to those around him. Who are we to question the Lord’s wisdom when He decided to give one gift to one person and another or even more gifts to another person? The only response we should have in recognizing the gifts of others is rejoicing that God has been so generous to gift His Church, the community of the People of God, with such gifts.
In other words, our focus ought to be identifying our own gifts and placing them at the service of the Church and praying that others will do the same. It is impossible to see how worrying about or being envious or jealous of the gifts of others is going to help the Church in its duty to proclaim the Gospel to all men and women. The only worthwhile response is to thank God for the gifts He gives to us all and to pray that we have the grace to use them faithfully in the service of the Gospel.
Jealousy will only lead to division and hurt; rejoicing in the gifts of others will lead to sharing and growth of the community. Let us pray that we will be faithful to all that God has entrusted us and so be active, joyful and contributing members of the communities of faith to which we belong. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I use my gifts for the benefit of the work of the Gospel or am I selfish with them?

Jesus, help me to be faithful to Your call and to always respond with generosity to use the gifts You have given me for the benefit of others.

St. Lambert of Lyon, pray for us.
