christians like christ

“…Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” – Mark 16:15

I write this reflection amidst much tension around the world — the global economic crisis, the loss of jobs, poverty, violence, corruption, terrorism, and the degradation of the environment and of moral and spiritual values. The call to spread the Gospel to the world is urgently needed today more than ever.
Yet, I believe that a more practical Gospel is what the world needs to see from us Christians. While solid Christian truths and doctrines of faith should not be compromised, peoples of different color, culture and creed will respond initially to common grounds such as understanding, respect, peace, hope, compassion and love.
Above all, people would appreciate the Gospel of Jesus more if they see Him in us — if we indeed practice what we preach. How could we convert a non-Christian to our faith if he or she sees our own life that lacks self-discipline and real transformation, or when we are judgmental and quick to condemn and hurt others? On the other hand, living a life of love and service to others will surely be the best attraction to our faith.
As Gandhi once said, “If all Christians acted like Christ, the whole world would be Christian.” Alvin Barcelona (alvinbarcelona@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Do I spread the Gospel of Jesus by being like Him?

Lord Jesus, help me to become more like You so I can spread Your Gospel more effectively to others by Your pure grace. Amen.

COMPANION

1st READING

The Gospel will empower all people to become disciples of Jesus, no matter what their background is. The most important aspect of our discipleship is that we have been chosen by God. If God has chosen us, what could possibly stand against us? Nothing! Now that is good news indeed.

Acts 4:13-21
13 Observing the boldness of Peter and John and perceiving them to be uneducated, ordinary men, they were amazed, and they recognized them as the companions of Jesus. 14 Then when they saw the man who had been cured standing there with them, they could say nothing in reply. 15 So they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, and conferred with one another, saying, 16 “What are we to do with these men? Everyone living in Jerusalem knows that a remarkable sign was done through them, and we cannot deny it. 17 But so that it may not be spread any further among the people, let us give them a stern warning never again to speak to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them back and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 Peter and John, however, said to them in reply, “Whether it is right in the sight of God for us to obey you rather than God, you be the judges. 20 It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” 21 After threatening them further, they released them, finding no way to punish them, on account of the people who were all praising God for what had happened.

Psalm 118:1, 14-15ab, 16-18, 19-21
R: I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me.
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. 14 My strength and my courage is the LORD, and he has been my savior. 15 The joyful shout of victory in the tents of the just. (R) 16 “The right hand of the LORD is exalted; the right hand of the LORD has struck with power.” 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. 18 Though the LORD has indeed chastised me, yet he has not delivered me to death. (R) 19 Open to me the gates of justice; I will enter them and give thanks to the LORD. 20 This gate is the LORD’s; the just shall enter it. 21 I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me and have been my savior. (R)

G O S P E L

Mathew’s account of the resurrection appearances gives us little detail other than the fact that Jesus appeared to many people. This is important as it demonstrates that the resurrection is not a truth that rests on the witness of one or two individuals. There are many testimonies that Jesus indeed rose from the dead. In fact, the resurrection of Jesus is one of the most strongly attested facts of history. There is more evidence concerning the life of Jesus than Aristotle or Plato, yet we never hear anyone question their existence. I wonder what it is that threatens people about the message of Jesus.

Mark 16:9-15
9 When Jesus had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. 12 After this he appeared in another form to two of them walking along on their way to the country. 13 They returned and told the others; but they did not believe them either. 14 But later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised. 15 He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.”

t h i n k : The most important aspect of our discipleship is that we have been chosen by God.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF BELIEVING

Sometimes we think that if we believe in Jesus, everything will go well for us and there will be no more struggles or trials in our lives. This is simply not true and anyone who tells you to believe it does not know the truth. Of course, there are differing degrees of struggle that we will face but there is no guarantee that we will not have to face big trials and struggles even if we have faith in Jesus Christ. Look at the lives of the saints and in particular the martyrs — they died for their faith. I do not think there are many bigger decisions in life than having to accept an unjust death, similar to that of Jesus Christ.
The Prosperity Gospel, or the proclamation of the Gospel that tells people they can only expect good things to happen to them, is simply false and a lie. Anyone who believes it, let alone preaches it, is ignorant of both history and the truth of the Gospel. There is no place in the Scriptures that tells us we will live without suffering and difficulties. In fact, the contrary is true! There are many places in the Scriptures that tell us that if we believe in Jesus we should get ready for suffering and trials. We live in a world that is anti-Gospel — that is, it more often than not refuses to adopt the values and truths commended to us by the Scriptures. This automatically tells us that if we believe in and model our lives on God’s Word, we will be in for persecution.
The apostles are not going to listen to the authorities’ demand that they cease preaching about Jesus. They know that what they have to say are necessary truths that all people need to hear. In their minds, and mine as well, they have no other option than to preach the Gospel to all whom they meet. Let us pray that we all have the courage to face the facts of our lives and to respond according to the Word and will of God and not succumb to the lies and temptations of the world.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I tend to give in if I am in the minority even though I believe my opinion is correct? Why am I unable to stand for what I believe?

Jesus, strengthen my resolve to stand for the truth and all I believe in so that Your Word will go forth to the ends of the earth.

St. Michael de Sanctis, pray for us.
