Memorial of St. Barnabas, Apostle

DETOXIFY

“Blessed are the clean of heart for they will see God.” – Matthew 5:8

There was a vain Emperor who busied himself with acquiring new clothes and flaunting them to his subjects. Two conmen who presented themselves as weavers promised to make him the finest clothes made from a magical fabric, visible only to those who are worthy and wise. When the new wardrobe was finished, the Emperor pretended he could see it. He had a parade to show off his new outfit. The crowd also pretended to see the magical suit. Suddenly, a little child, in all his innocence, shouted, “The Emperor is wearing nothing.” The Emperor failed to recognize that he had been tricked.
In the same way, if we constantly sin in mind and heart, and preoccupy ourselves with the things of this world, it would be hard for us to see God and recognize His presence with our spiritual eyes.
A priest said, “People with pure hearts unceasingly think about God. They are free from passions caused by self-centeredness, egotism and pride.”
Want to have a pure heart? Remove all rubbish and garbage that pollute your soul… and then you will see Him. Judith Concepcion (svp_jmc@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Have you done some “house” cleaning lately?

“A clean heart create for me, O God; renew in me a steadfast spirit.” (Psalm 51:12)

COMPANION

1ST READING

Barnabas and Saul (Paul-to-be) are set aside for a particular role – to take the Gospel to distant lands, to be missionaries where none have gone before them. There are still many areas of the world that need missionaries. The Gospel is yet to penetrate the hearts and minds of millions of citizens of the world. Let us pray that God will raise men and women willing to bring them the Good News.

Acts 11:21-26; 13:1-3
21 In those days a great number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The news about them reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart, 24 for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. And a large number of people was added to the Lord. 25 Then he went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a large number of people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians. 13: 1 Now there were in the Church at Antioch prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, completing their fasting and prayer, they laid hands on them and sent them off.

P S A L M
Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6
R: The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.
1 Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The Lord has made his salvation known: in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) 5 Sing praise to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the Lord. (R)

GOSPEL

The Beatitudes provide wonderful food for reflection. It is important that we realize that the attitudes of the heart that they spell out are essential aspects of living in the Kingdom of God. Let us meditate on these words of God often until they are etched into our hearts and minds.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Go and teach all the nations, says the Lord; I am with you always, until the end of the world.

Matthew 5:1-12 (or Matthew 10:7-13)
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 He began to teach them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. 6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

SABBATH

WHERE TO?

Before we are finally ordained for the priesthood, we need to pass a comprehensive examination that includes all the things that we have learned, with emphasis on clear and correct understanding of the basic doctrines of the Catholic Faith. The common structure of the exam is the Apostle’s Creed because it contains everything that we believe in. Other theologians also consider the Lord’s Prayer. But some see the fullness of faith in the Gospel reading that we have today — the Beatitudes.
The Beatitudes was Jesus’ opening teaching in the so-called Sermon on the Mount. There, He addressed some of the basic questions of His time. But the Beatitudes specifically responded to the need for holiness as means to salvation. Jesus makes clear that He is the reason for everything. Blessedness is not based on one’s status but on why one is in that status. Poverty, imprisonment, rejection and sorrow, for example, are blessings if experienced in faith. They are not curses of life; they can also be sources of holiness. In the same way, riches, laughter, freedom, fame and power are not always a sign of blessing. For them to be blessings, they must have been attained morally and, more importantly, used for God’s purpose.
It is sad how material or earthly things are dominating the lives of people today. Maybe it is because of our humanity. But let us remember that we came from God. We were created in His image and likeness. Human as we are, we have souls, too! We are destined for the Kingdom of God and not for the world and we should give the highest regard to that which will lead us to our destiny. We must not allow ourselves to be used. Rather, the things of the world must be used in accordance with God’s Will.
Holiness is not a luxury for a Christian — it is a must. Either we are holy or evil. It is not an impossible dream. By ourselves, we cannot achieve it. With God, everything is possible! The Beatitudes provide a direction and supply a ”to do” list to achieve our goal of holiness. If not God’s Kingdom, where? Fr. Benny Tuazon

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Check out the Beatitudes. Which applies to your present situation? How can you turn your present situation into a blessing?

Lord Jesus, You called us to holiness. May everything that we experience and everything that we do lead us to Your Kingdom.
