| | A COMPLETE MAN So Jesus said, “Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God.” And they were amazed at Jesus. – Mark 12:17 I served in a youth camp for 10 to 12-year-old kids one summer. The camp was turning out great until it started to rain right before dinner. Because of the continuous downpour, they decided that nobody would sleep in the tents. Campers would occupy two big cottages — one for the boys and the otherfor the girls. The downpour became stronger as each team moved towards the cottages. Thunder and lightning added to the agitation of the young campers. I decided to check both cottages when everyone had moved in. While some were already asleep at the girls’ cottage, a lot were praying hard that the rains would stop. But the boys’ cottage was a different scene. It was a party complete with singing, dancing and blinking flashlights! It made me smile. Men and women are really different and the signs are evident even at preadolescence. In the same way, the government and the Church are different. Our service for our country is different from our service to God. | | COMPANION | 1ST READING P S A L M GOSPEL Peter is under no illusion that the grace of holiness is one that requires us to work hard to complement and so complete it. He tells us that we will have to do our utmost to grow in self-control, goodness, understanding and many other virtuous qualities. Let us remember the price Jesus paid for our salvation; it will keep in proper perspective the hard work we also have to contribute to grow in holiness. 2 Peter 1:2-7 2 Beloved: May grace and peace be yours in abundance through knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power. 4 Through these, he has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divine nature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, 6 knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, 7 devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love. P S A L M Psalm 91:1-2, 14-15, 15-16 R: In you, my God, I place my trust. 1 You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, 2 Say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (R) 14 Because he clings to me, I will deliver him; I will set him on high because he acknowledges my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in distress. (R) I will deliver him and glorify him; 16 with length of days I will gratify him and will show him my salvation. (R) GOSPEL The protagonists in this parable are first and foremost the Jews who have failed to recognize the Messiah as He appears in their midst as Jesus. Secondly, it speaks to us who are just as bad for failing to live by the grace and blessing of salvation that we received in the Sacrament of Baptism. We should look at our own level of faithfulness to God before passing judgment on others. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Jesus Christ, you are the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead; you have loved us and freed us from our sins by your blood. Mark 12:1-12 1 Jesus began to speak to the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and left on a journey. 2 At the proper time he sent a servant to the tenants to obtain from them some of the produce of the vineyard. 3 But they seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Again he sent them another servant. And that one they beat over the head and treated shamefully. 5 He sent yet another whom they killed. So, too, many others; some they beat, others they killed. 6 He had one other to send, a beloved son. He sent him to them last of all, thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 So they seized him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come, put the tenants to death, and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this Scripture Passage: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 11 by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes’?” 12 They were seeking to arrest him, but they feared the crowd, for they realized that he had addressed the parable to them. | | SABBATH | WHILE WAITING One day, a friend from the corporate world relayed a story. He was looking at his bosses and his future corporate life. Suddenly, he didn’t see himself spending his life there. Every once in a while, we take the long view. We see the mortality of our lives. We see the end of everything. What matters most? What’s it all about? How do we prioritize our choices? End Times. The First Reading talks about the End Times through the image of flames and fire. And because of the lack of waiting, there is the temptation to fall into the error of “unprincipled,” wicked ways. The psalmist sings of the days that “pass quickly and drift away.” The Gospel of Mark speaks of ensnaring Jesus and finding fault in whatever He may say or do. In other words, despite the End Times, people may slide into the error of unprincipled, drifting and ensnaring ways. In Between Times. The first reading talks about growing in the knowledge of Jesus while waiting for a new heaven and a new earth. The psalmist acknowledges a refuge in God and, with gladness, sings of the kindness and sees the glory of the works of God. The Gospel of Mark talks about rendering to God what belongs to God and rendering to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. In the Meantime. Do we wait or prepare? There is a sacrament of waiting because in hope, a baby is born and a tree grows. It is not just a passive waiting but also an active preparing: growing in grace and knowledge of the Lord, singing the kindness of the Lord, and doing what belongs to God. In Greek, there is kronos and there is kairos. Kronos is just the passing of time. Kairos is the proper and meaningful fruitful time. The late Jaime Cardinal Sin talks about the way we can engage with the state by “critical collaboration.” We believe we need to engage in the city but we have a lasting, eternal city waiting for us.
