| | Making a Stand All you who want to serve God in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil persons and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. – 2 Timothy 3:12-13 As I write this reflection, the proposed Reproductive Health (RH) Bill remains to be very controversial. The debate for its passage has disturbingly polarized a country that is predominantly Catholic. It has put to test the core values of the nation and the will of the faithful to remain steadfast in the tenets (not selectively) of the Church. I have not read the entire bill nor have I sat through public hearings on the bill to be able to offer a sound opinion. My awareness is limited to what is published and corridor discussions amongst colleagues. I don’t have the answers to the economic challenges the bill is supposed to address. And I am still in a quandary as to what extent the bill was crafted and supported with the purest intention, or tainted by political pressures, personal ambition or profit. One thing is clear. The proposed RH bill, in the form and content as of this writing, is strongly being opposed by the Catholic Church. As the bastions of my faith, I believe them, and that is enough for me to make a stand against it. | | COMPANION | 1ST READING Let us listen to what Paul has to say about the usefulness of the Scriptures and ask ourselves whether or not we are committed enough to knowing and living them in our daily lives. The Scripture is one of the wellsprings of revelation in the life of the Church (the other is Tradition). What are we doing to deepen our knowledge of them and so grow in our faith and understanding of God’s love for us? 2 Timothy 3:10-17 10 You have followed my teaching, way of life, purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, persecutions that I endured. Yet from all these things the Lord delivered me. 12 In fact, all who want to live religiously in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13 But wicked people and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. 14 But you, remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, 15 and that from infancy you have known the sacred scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work. P S A L M Psalm 119:157, 160, 161, 165, 166, 168 R: O Lord, great peace have they who love your law. 157 Though my persecutors and my foes are many, I turn not away from your decrees. (R) 160 Permanence is your word’s chief trait; each of your just ordinances is everlasting. (R) 161 Princes persecute me without cause but my heart stands in awe of your word. (R) 165 Those who love your law have great peace, and for them there is no stumbling block. (R) 166 I wait for your salvation, O Lord, and your commands I fulfill. (R) 168 I keep your precepts and your decrees, for all my ways are before you. (R) GOSPEL Jesus recalls the sentiment of Psalm 110 as He describes the nature of authority and power. All power and authority emanate from God as something delegated by God to Him or others for our use in proclaiming the Good News and ensuring order in society. Abuse of power is a terrible thing as it is both cynical and a deep betrayal of the nature of God’s love and mercy. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him and will come to him. Mark 12:35-37 35 As Jesus was teaching in the temple area he said, “How do the scribes claim that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, said: “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet.’ ” 37 David himself calls him ‘Lord’; so how is he his son?” The great crowd heard this with delight. think: What are we doing to deepen our knowledge of Scriptures and so grow in our faith and understanding of God’s love for us? | | SABBATH | god’s word as inspiration I remember a mother in a seminar who said, “If I lose hope, if I lose my faith, what will happen to my children?” This leads us to ask ourselves: Despite the reality of suffering in life, what moves us to go on living? Despite competing values, what matters most to us? Despite distractions, what inspires us to serve God’s people? Suffer with Jesus. Unite with Jesus. Surrender all for Jesus. Paul tells Timothy that following Jesus Christ is not an easy road because of increasing persecution in many places: Antioch, Iconium and Lystra. Errors will turn for the worse. Even the Gospel of Mark mentions enemies to be subjected under the Lord’s feet. The Gospel talks of the enemies of Jesus who plot ways to trap Him. It is a fact that persecutions and errors abound. But Paul testifies: “Yet from all these things the Lord delivered me.” The Word of God is not a dry and dead document for it can inspire and correct. As we read it, it can teach, here and now. There is something eternal about the ordinances of God. Timothy followed the way of Jesus through the teaching of Paul, who encouraged him, “But you, remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it.” The Word of God is capable of training the believer to be righteous and competent for good works. The Word inspires us here and now. We wait for salvation. We fulfill God’s commands. We keep God’s laws. The community after the resurrection of Jesus recognized the need to submit everything to Him.
