God IS NEVER WRONG

“Which is the first of all the commandments?” – Mark 12:28

My students in Theology class giggled when I showed them my rules.
Rule number one: The teacher is always right.
Rule number two: If the teacher is wrong, see rule number one.
These rules are not to be followed because teachers can also be wrong.
But these rules definitely apply to God. He is sovereign, all-knowing and never wrong.
Rule number one is easy to believe when everything in your life is fine. However, you have to remember rule number two when you are faced with doubts, when your world seems collapsing, or if you do not understand why bad things are happening in your life.
Never forget these rules. They will be your reasons for waking up to another day. God is never wrong.
If in case you think He is wrong, check rule number one.Arun Gogna (gognaa1@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Just imagine if God can be wrong, where will you put your faith in?

In the midst of my problems I believe, my God, that You know what You are doing in my life.

Servant of God Joseph Perez, pray for us.

COMPANION

1ST READING

Nothing will stop Paul from proclaiming the Gospel. They can tie him up in chains but he will proclaim the Good News to his jailors or the people who come to him in prison. Paul knows the treasure he has received in coming to faith in Jesus Christ. Let us all learn to appreciate this reality as much as he did. If we do, it will not take long to convert the world.

2 Timothy 2:8-15
8 Beloved: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David: such is my Gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. 11 This saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him we shall also live with him; 12 if we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. 14 Remind people of these things and charge them before God to stop disputing about words. This serves no useful purpose since it harms those who listen. 15 Be eager to present yourself as acceptable to God, a workman who causes no disgrace, imparting the word of truth without deviation.

P S A L M

Psalm 25:4-5, 8-9, 10, 14
R: Teach me your ways, O Lord.
4 Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths, 5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. (R) 8 Good and upright is the Lord; thus he shows sinners the way. 9 He guides the humble to justice, he teaches the humble his way. (R) 10 All the paths of the Lord are kindness and constancy toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees. 14 The friendship of the Lord is with those who fear him, and his covenant, for their instruction. (R)

GOSPEL

The summary of the Ten Commandments in the call to love both God and neighbor is a simple way to remember the essence of the commandment. However, it is also necessary that we live the prescriptions of the commandments. There is no point in knowing the truth if we are not committed to living it. That would be hypocrisy and what the Gospel needs today are not hypocrites but holy men and women who live the message of love for which Jesus gave His life.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life to light through the Gospel.

Mark 12:28-34
28 One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” 29 Jesus replied, “The first is this: ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! 30 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, ‘He is One and there is no other than he.’ 33 And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

think: There is no point in knowing the truth if we are not committed to living it.

TRIALS, TRUTH AND TARGET

The song Alfie reminds us of the meaning of life: “What‘s it all about, Alfie? Is it just for the moment we live? ... And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie, what will you lend on an old golden rule?” The world measures by power, possessions and pleasure. The Gospel measures by surrender, simplicity and service.
The readings remind us to expect trials, to teach the truth, and to prioritize the target: to love. We need rules and rituals but we are reminded of the role of relationships: to love God first, and to love our neighbor as we love our self.
Trials. Following Jesus meant for Paul to suffer for the Gospel or be chained like a criminal. He was ready to embrace everything for the sake of the chosen. He warned the early Christians not to be trapped by disputes, disgrace and deviations.
Truth. Paul reminds Timothy that the word of God is not chained. Beyond all disputes, disgrace and deviations, Paul preaches Jesus as our deliverer from sins. Paul encourages Timothy to persevere to the end. The psalmist petitions: “Teach us your ways, O Lord.” The Lord guides the sinners, the humble to the path of justice, kindness and constancy.
Target. Paul instructs Timothy to remember what is the goal of the ministry: the Word of God cannot be chained. He teaches, “If we have died with him we shall also live with him.”
In the end, Paul teaches the truth: to be with Jesus. Beyond all burnt offerings and sacrifices is the love of God first, the love of neighbor and the love of self. In other words, the commandment is to love, to build relationships first before rules and rituals. Fr. Teodulo P. Gonzales, S.J

REFLECTION QUESTION: What trials do you experience in following Jesus?

O most loving Father of Jesus Christ, from whom flows all love, let our hearts, frozen in sin, cold to You and cold to others, be warmed by this divine fire. So help and bless us in Your Son. (Prayer of Anselm, 12th Century)
