| | REGRET ... NOT Jesus went up a hill to pray and spent the whole night there praying to God. – Luke 6:12 Art is my first love. Before I learned how to read or write, I already knew how to draw. I even had my own comic book characters when I was a kid. But I didn’t pursue a career in the arts. As a teenager, I was led to believe that there was no money in it. Though I was satisfied taking up engineering, I still regret not becoming a graphic artist or an animator. Why do regrets come only in the end? Why do we feel sorry about the things that happened or didn’t happen in the past? Maybe it’s because we didn’t ask for God’s guidance before we made a decision. Because if we did, then we would have the confidence that whatever has happened was His will and was part of His bigger plan. In today’s Gospel, Jesus had to spend overnight praying on top of a hill before making a big decision of naming His 12 Apostles. And guess what, one of those He chose would become a traitor. But did Jesus regret it? I don’t think so. For He knew that it was part of the Father’s plan. | | COMPANION | 1st READING St. Paul explains to the Christians all that Christ has accomplished for us in His death on the cross. Through the cross, we have been freed of our sins, circumcised in our hearts, raised to new life, and Satan’s power over us has been broken. Hence, we are now to live a new life in the power of the Holy Spirit and not be dominated by our sinful desires. Let us today claim the power of the cross in our minds and hearts. Colossians 2:6-15 6 Brothers and sisters: As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him, 7 rooted in him and built upon him and established in the faith as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that no one captivate you with an empty, seductive philosophy according to tradition of men, according to the elemental powers of the world and not according to Christ. 9 For in him dwells the whole fullness of the deity bodily, 10 and you share in this fullness in him, who is the head of every principality and power. 11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not administered by hand, by stripping off the carnal body, with the circumcision of Christ. 12 You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And even when you were dead in transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; 14 obliterating the bond against us, with its legal claims, which was opposed to us, he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross; 15 despoiling the principalities and the powers, he made a public spectacle of them, leading them away in triumph by it. (R) G O S P E L Even though Jesus was God, He lived His life with the limitations of human reality. Like us, He needed to spend time in prayer, seeking God the Father’s blessing and direction for His life. Here, we see Jesus doing an all-night vigil before He chooses the 12 Apostles. Like Jesus, we need to pray fervently before we make any major decisions in our lives so that we will be guided by God to make the right one. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia I chose you from the world, that you may go and bear fruit that will last, says the Lord. R: Alleluia, alleluia Luke 6:12-19 12 Jesus departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God. 13 When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a Zealot, 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. 17 And he came down with them and stood on a stretch of level ground. A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon 18 came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured. 19 Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all. my reflections think: Like Jesus, we need to pray fervently before we make any major decisions in our lives so that we will be guided by God to make the right one. | | SABBATH | Jesus Prays! Why not us? The beginning of today’s Gospel says that Jesus departed to the mountain to pray. And He did not only pray for hours but spent the night in prayer to God. You ask, “Jesus prays?” And why not? Prayer is communication with God more than an activity of a creature to his Creator. It is a person to person exchange. It is an exchange of “wills,” if you will. The Christian is expected to pray always and more in serious situations. There is nothing more important to a Christian than to know what God wills and to express his will in the process. Jesus shows His true humanity. He was the Son of God, true, but He was also the son of Mary and Joseph. He needed to pray, and pray He did. Incidentally, He did it because He was about to choose His 12 apostles — men who will be witnesses to everything He was to do and say, who will compose the foundation of His Church, who will see to it that everything will be passed on to future generations. They were important men and He had to confer with God about them. As a parish priest, I also get to choose my servants. They are men and women who will be my co-operators in the ministry of salvation. Ever since I became a parish priest, I have always looked for people who will be of service to the parish. I even interview them to let them know what is expected of them and what parish service entails. I find myself praying to God for enlightenment every time. I also tell them to spend time in prayer before finally deciding to become servants. Service to God is ultimately between them and God, and not with me. In most cases, our decisions were stable and responsible. Personally, I make it a point to pray before I go out of my room in the morning. I know that once I get out of my room, I would find it harder to commune with God because of so many things to do and people to attend to. Before I retire at night, I pray again so that God and I will always be on the same page. Needless to say, prayer is my source of spiritual strength, my refuge when I am faced with challenges and crucial decisions. If Jesus prays, so much more should we! Fr.
