WAIT FOR THE CATCH

“Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” – Luke 5:4

For 30 years, the Light of Jesus Family was trying to catch more fish. Patiently. Faithfully. Obediently. But there was a time when no matter what we did, we weren’t growing in number.
Sometimes, I wondered if God was just calling us to do media work, as this was being blessed. But Light of Jesus itself was stagnating. Don’t get me wrong. Our caring groups were strong. And our chapter meetings were tight. But why weren’t we growing in number by leaps and bounds?
And then a breakthrough happened. It was like we turned a corner and KABOOM! We knew who we were and what we were called to do. With this new direction, we dared to put out into the deep.
We opened more satellite Feasts in different places. And people flocked and grew in number.
It was like an explosion.
The message: Don’t give up when nothing seems to be happening. Just continue lowering your nets even in places where a catch doesn’t seem likely. And then wait. God will do the rest. Bo Sanchez (bosanchez@kerygmafamily.com)

REFLECTION:
Are you reaping any harvest for your efforts? Are you fulfilling your dreams? If not, continue planting. Harvest will come.

Lead me, Lord, to the path of abundance and fruitfulness in my life.

COMPANION

1st READING

St. Paul prays a wonderful prayer for the Christians at Collose. He asks God to fill them with a knowledge of His will by giving them all spiritual insights and wisdom. This is something that we can all pray for as well so that each day we can walk in God’s will and complete the work that He has for us. This way, our lives will bear abundant fruit for His glory.

Colossians 1:9-14
9 Brothers and sisters: From the day we heard about you, we do not cease praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding 10 to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, so as to be fully pleasing, in every good work bearing fruit and growing in the knowledge of God, 11 strengthened with every power, in accord with his glorious might, for all endurance and patience, with joy 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. 13 He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Psalms 98:2-3, 3-4, 5-6
R: The Lord has made known his salvation.
2 The LORD has made his salvation known: in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) 5 Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. 6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the LORD. (R)

Peter had been fishing all night and he had caught nothing. After Jesus had finished teaching the crowds, He tells Peter to cast out his net for a catch of fish. Peter is initially reluctant as he had worked all night doing just that and had caught nothing. But he overcomes his natural reluctance and obeys the Lord. Immediately he and his companions catch a huge quantity of fish so much so that their nets are breaking. This story demonstrates the importance of listening to Jesus and following Him if we want our ministries to be fruitful.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Come after me, says the Lord, and I will make you fishers of men.
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Luke 5:1-11
1 While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. 2 He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. 4 After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” 5 Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. 7 They signalled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” 9 For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, 10 and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

SABBATH

Jesus Says, Simon Follows!

This may be the story of the call of Peter, but in essence, it is everyone’s call to be a Christian. The circumstances of the call reveals to us who we really are and who Jesus really is.
Peter had just come back from an all-night fishing job when Jesus approached him and requested him to put his boat ashore so He could teach. Peter, by then, must already have heard Jesus’ talks. He must have been moved by His teachings, such that when Jesus commanded him to go out again and catch fish, He wanted to follow Him except that he knew there was nothing more to catch. Remember, Peter was a veteran fisherman. He had been at the job for a long time. He knew his craft well. He knew the sea, the weather, the fish, etc. Later, however, he would realize that the Lord knew better. He was not able to restrain himself from questioning the Lord. But because of what he heard from the Lord’s teaching, he followed Jesus’ command. Proven wrong, Peter saw Jesus in a deeper way. Maybe a beatific vision that prompted him to kneel before Jesus and admit to his unworthiness.
Crucial to Peter’s conversion was listening first to the Lord. It should be the same with us.  Listening here doesn’t just mean hearing the spoken word but also understanding it. The Lord had spoken from the heart, therefore, we must listen from the heart.
Peter must have had some questions or objections, but having felt and heard the Lord’s presence, his faith rather than experience prevailed. The Lord’s will over his will. The Lord’s authority more than his. In short, Peter simply put everything in Jesus’ hands.
The miracle of the catch not only astonished Peter but also those around him who had also heard the Lord. It was enough for them to make a decision to leave everything and follow Jesus. It is symbolic of the fact that when we find the Lord, everything becomes dispensable. Having found the Lord completes us. We will never be wanting of anything or anyone. The Lord alone is enough.  Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:
Have you ever felt God calling you to follow Him or to do something for Him? How did you respond?

Lord, open my ears, my mind and my heart to listen to Your call. Make my feet and hands ever ready to do what You want me to do. Amen.

St. Fiacre, pray for us.
