UNEXPECTED HEALING

The crowds went looking for him (Jesus), and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news...” – Luke 4:42-43

A father who attended the 2009 Kerygma Conference prayed for his daughter to be healed from a certain condition. Weeks later, he noticed some changes, but not with his daughter. The father who wore glasses realized that his vision became clearer as days passed.
He didn’t understand why he was being healed. Nevertheless, He submits to the will of the Lord and is thankful.
In today’s Gospel, crowds tried to prevent Jesus from leaving so he could continue healing the people in that place. Jesus said “no” and that was probably difficult for many to understand. He had to move on and preach the Good News elsewhere.
We can always pray for healing, for ourselves and for others. Whom He decides to heal, we don’t know. But one thing is sure: Jesus loves us so much that He is concerned over our eternal salvation. If He doesn’t heal our body, but He heals our soul then that’s the greater blessing. Our time here on earth is but a speck compared to where our souls go after.  Carlo Lorenzo (carloflorenzo@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
“My child, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.” (Proverbs 4:20-22)

Divine Healer, we pray for the sick, breathe Your love into their bodies, but more importantly, may we all embrace You into our lives and follow the path to heaven.

COMPANION

1st READING
St. Paul begins his letter by giving thanks to God for His grace at work in the community to whom he writes. He mentions the three theological virtues of faith, hope and love that are manifest in the lives of the Christians at Colosse. These three virtues support each other and unite us most closely with God. When our faith grows dim, our hope dies and love lessens. By deepening our love for the Word of God, our faith will grow stronger.

Colossians 1:1-8
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 to the holy ones and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae: grace to you and peace from God our Father. 3 We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the holy ones 5 because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. Of this you have already heard through the word of truth, the gospel, 6 that has come to you. Just as in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing, so also among you, from the day you heard it and came to know the grace of God in truth, 7 as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow slave, who is a trustworthy minister of Christ on your behalf 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

P S A L M

Psalms 52:10, 11
R: I trust in the mercy of God forever.
8 [10] I, like a green olive tree in the house of God, trust in the mercy of God forever and ever. (R) 9 [11] I will thank you always for what you have done, and proclaim the goodness of your name before your faithful ones. (R)

G O S P E L

We can see from this Gospel story that Simon Peter was not poor. He had his own business, a fishing boat and a home where Jesus and His disciples stayed when in Capernaum. Yet he put all these at the service of God’s Kingdom. What fruit did his decision bring? Peter’s mother-in-law, who had severe fever (probably malaria), is healed by Jesus and so are a multitude of people in the town. Let us also be generous in our response to God’s call as St. Peter was.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
The Lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor and to proclaim liberty to captives.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

Luke 4:38-44
38 After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. 39 He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them. 40 At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. 41 And demons also came out from many, shouting, “You are the Son of God.” But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ. 42 At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. 43 But he said to them, “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

SABBATH

WHAT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY?

Mother Teresa of Calcutta teaches us that we should ask God every day what He wants us to do for Him. If we don’t, how can we honestly say that we did not know that such and such was what He wanted us to do? It may be literally true but morally speaking, we are at fault because we have not, in good faith, attempted to discover His will in the first place.
There are many who think that ignorance is a valid excuse but as the saying goes, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse!” We have a moral responsibility to know the law particularly when we are about to make a choice. It is similar to our responsibility to be busy with God’s will for our lives. God does not send text messages and emails to reveal His will for our lives. We have to seek it out. There are many ways to do this, including daily prayer, which is an essential element.
If we fail to take this call seriously, we will be wondering until Judgment Day as to what God wanted us to do. Unfortunately, by then, we will be required to give an account of our lives and why we have consistently failed to even seek God’s will, let alone accomplish it. Therefore we should do all that we can now to ensure that we discover God’s will so that we could follow it as best as we can.
We cannot say that we do not have our destiny in our hands. It is up to us to make the right choices now so that we can walk the path that God wants us to take. Let us be faithful in praying so we can give ourselves the best opportunity to discover God’s will and the chance to follow it. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

Reflection Question:
Do I seriously try to discover God’s will in my life? What am I doing to seek it?

Jesus, I know Your will for my life is perfect and the only way to true fulfillment. Help me to discover it and to be faithful in following it.

St. Caesidius, pray for us.
