MY THREE SETS OF PARENTS

“Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers...” – Acts 20: 31

I have three sets of parents who, by coincidence or by divine design, happen to have something in common in the month of June.
June 9 is the wedding anniversary of my father, Mamerto, and my mother, Helen — the first persons who taught me to pray and have faith in God.
June 2 is the birthday of George Ojala, my American foster father in Minnesota where I studied for a year as an exchange student. He and his wife, Ruby, embraced me like their own daughter and introduced me to the Holy Bible.
June 2 is also the birthday of Tito Gene, the Caring Group leader who, with his wife, our Tita Pilar, took care of my husband, Ed, and me during our early years as members of the Light of Jesus Family founded by their son, Bo Sanchez. We consider Tito Gene and Tita Pilar as our spiritual parents as they were our mentors when we were baby Christians.
Just as St. Paul labored to disciple the Ephesians, my three sets of parents did their share to bring me closer to the Lord. I am moved, with tears stinging my eyes, every time I remember what they have done for me.  Cynthia Santiago (boses2go@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Honor those who admonish you with tears.

Lord, I commend to You my parents and other people who have brought me close to You.

COMPANION

1st READING

Paul worked with the people of Ephesus for three years. He shed tears in forming them in the ways of the Gospel. Do we really think it will be any different for us? Do we think that we can raise up communities that are going to endure in a few weeks? What a joke that is! Our communities will be as good as the effort we put into building them; the degree of commitment of its members will determine its effectiveness in proclaiming the Gospel. Yes, there will be moments of grace where things go ahead easily but they will be more than compensated for by the times of struggle where we will be close to giving up.

Acts 20:28-38
28 At Miletus, Paul spoke to the presbyters of the Church of Ephesus: “Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, in which you tend the church of God that he acquired with his own blood. 29 I know that after my departure savage wolves will come among you, and they will not spare the flock. 30 And from your own group, men will come forward perverting the truth to draw the disciples away after them. 31 So be vigilant and remember that for three years, night and day, I unceasingly admonished each of you with tears. 32 And now I commend you to God and to that gracious word of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated. 33 I have never wanted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. 34 You know well that these very hands have served my needs and my companions. 35 In every way I have shown you that by hard work of that sort we must help the weak, and keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus who himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” 36 When he had finished speaking he knelt down and prayed with them all. 37 They were all weeping loudly as they threw their arms around Paul and kissed him, 38 for they were deeply distressed that he had said that they would never see his face again. Then they escorted him to the ship.

Psalms 68:29-30, 33-35, 35-36
R: Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth.
28 [29] Show forth, O God, your power. the power, O God, with which you took our part; 29 [30] for your temple in Jerusalem let the kings bring you gifts. (R) 32 [33] You kingdoms of the earth, sing to God, chant praise to the Lord 33 [34] who rides on the heights of the ancient heavens. Behold, his voice resounds, the voice of power. 34 [35] “Confess the power of God!” (R) Over Israel in his majesty; his power is in the skies. 35 [36] Awesome in his sanctuary is God, the God of Israel; he gives power and strength to his people. (R)

G O S P E L

I do not believe that it is ever the will of God for a community to have a rancorous split. That is, it is never the will of God for disagreement to be the cause of disunity. The Holy Spirit is a Spirit of unity and we must always seek to resolve our differences and not resort to separation. Humanly speaking there are times when it can get too difficult to resolve a situation but that is never the will of God – it is the result of human sin!
2 Maccabees 7-8
ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Your word, O Lord, is truth; consecrate us in the truth.
R: Alleluia, alleluia

John 17:11-19
11 Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: “Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are. 12 When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely. 14 I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. 17 Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. 19 And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.”

my reflections
think: I t is never the will of God for a disagreement to be the cause of disunity.

SABBATH

A PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

In this second Gospel installment of Jesus Christ’s High-Priestly Prayer, our Lord continues to intercede for His disciples. The opening verses are truly worth quoting: “O Father most holy, protect them with your name which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.” Towards the end of this passage too, Jesus consecrates us.
In the meantime, we have in today’s first reading a similar tender moment. Paul speaks to the church leaders of Ephesus before his emotional departure. He gives them his recommendations and advice. He tells them, “I commend you now to the Lord, and to that gracious word of His which can enlarge you and give you a share among all who are consecrated to Him.”
This idea of consecration deserves our consideration. The Merriam-Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary gives us at least three categories of meanings for the verb “consecrate.” But in our case, we aren’t told who is the one consecrating. The dictionary doesn’t tell us who the active agent is in the act of consecration.
It should be a no-brainer, anyway: God, and God alone, is the one who consecrates. It is He who sets us apart. It is He who makes us holy. It is He who dedicates us for a special mission or purpose. In the last verse of our Gospel passage, Jesus states, “I consecrate myself for their sakes now, that they may be consecrated in truth.” Jesus may certainly consecrate Himself; we instead are consecrated by Jesus in this priestly prayer of His. He truly is our priest, interceding for us and offering us in sacrifice to the Father. Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

Reflection Question:
What has the Lord set you apart for? Search for it in your heart.

Help me to become a man worthy of Your consecration, Lord.

St. Sallustian, pray for us.
