Feast of St. Andrew, Apostle

SPREAD THE WORD

And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” – Romans 10:14-15

I am so thankful for the Kerygma Preachers. Each one of them has a unique style: Alvin plays a song on his guitar. Obet uses acronyms. Adrian does a song and dance. Arun cracks jokes. Jon talks about his family. Mike tells of his long experience in the Renewal. Rissa shares about her baby girl. Bo uses metaphors and analogies.
All of them have great stories to tell and they are so selfless in sharing. And that, for me, is the key. I believe we don’t have to be a great speaker to share God’s love. We don’t necessarily need to go up on stage and face an audience of thousands. Because I’m just as blessed listening to these preachers in our small sharing group talking about their ordinary experiences.
It could also be a matter of just sharing something to the next person you see, blogging about it or texting a friend. Whether it be about an everyday incident or a life-changing event, the important thing is to share. And by doing that, we are preaching — because everything good comes from God. George Tolentino Gabriel (george.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
When was the last time you shared about a blessing to someone? Don’t miss the next opportunity.

Lord, let my mouth confess Your blessings at all times.

COMPANION

1st READING

The apostles gave their lives in martyrdom (except John) to proclaim the Gospel. This is the highest price anyone can pay. They freely  chose to pay it. Why? Because they had experienced the power of Jesus to change their lives. If you have had a similar experience then you need to proclaim this truth also. If not, then pray for God to convert you to Himself so that you can then witness to His transforming power. You cannot give to someone else what you do not first have yourself.

Romans 10:9-18
9 Brothers and sisters: If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 For the scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? 15 And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring [the] good news!” 16 But not everyone has heeded the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what was heard from us?” 17 Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. 18 But I ask, did they not hear? Certainly they did; for “Their voice has gone forth to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.”

Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 11
R: The judgments of the Lord are true, and all of them are just.
7 [8] The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. (R) 8 [9] The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye. (R) 9 [10] The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. (R) 10 [11] They are more precious than gold, than a heap of purest gold; sweeter also than syrup or honey from the comb. (R)

Andrew is no exceptional person. He is an ordinary fisherman, a normal member of society. Look at the transformation brought about in his life through knowing Jesus. From fisher of fishes he becomes a fisher of men and a martyr for Jesus. There is no greater glory reserved for a man than to lay down his life in the service of the Gospel.

Matthew 4:18-22
18 As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. 19 He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. 21 He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, 22 and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him.

SABBATH

Andrew, my Idol

Andrew was a fisherman from Bethsaida, the brother of Peter, and a disciple of John the Baptist. He had left his job even before he came to know Jesus. He must have been very eager to learn more about God and the expected Messiah.
According to the Gospel of John, Andrew, with the beloved disciple, was the first who followed Jesus. He was the one who brought his brother to Jesus but strangely Jesus preferred Peter to him. He was not prominent and not included in the Peter-John-James inner circle. And yet he never complained or carried a grudge.
In the famous incident where the disciples were helpless about feeding a big crowd, it was Andrew who spotted the boy with five loaves and brought him to Jesus, thus paving the way for the multiplication of the loaves. When some Greeks asked to have an audience with Jesus, it was again Andrew who introduced them to his Master. Bringing people to Jesus must be his joy.
Legends tell us about his mission in Russia and his death on a diagonal cross in Greece. The Greek Orthodox Church of Constantinople (Istanbul) venerates Andrew as its founder. The Patriarch of Constantinople (or a delegate) visits Rome on the feast of St. Peter, and today the Pope is sending a delegation to Istanbul to celebrate the feast of Andrew, Peter’s brother. Today, the two brothers meet and embrace in a culmination of efforts to create unity between the two Churches. Let us pray today in a special way for Church unity.
But back to Andrew. What I admire in him is that he was not offended when Jesus favored his brother Peter. Normally, we would feel offended, develop a feeling of resentment, and ignore the person who snubbed us. But not Andrew. From his life, we draw the good news that God can use anybody — strong as well as average — for the spread of His kingdom. We might be just average people who never make the headlines. What is important to remember is that dedication to Jesus and working out of love for Him merits a score that is not average but a hundred percent.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
How do I feel when others are favored over me? Do I remain dedicated to God despite His seeming preference for others?

Lord, thank You for giving us St. Andrew as a model. May his dedication to You and his eagerness to bring others to You inspire us to live as Your disciples.

St. Zosimus, pray for us.
