| Dear Lordie, Don't be discouraged! God will be with you through this week.
Praying for you,

| A BROTHERLY ACT OF LOVE “If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.” – Luke 17:3 He was a man I truly respected. Someone I looked up to and admired a lot. And I hurt him. I can’t disclose the nature of my offense, but what’s important is how he handled it. He came over to my place one morning then proceeded to narrate how I had offended him. I had no idea. I was moved to tears out of remorse for hurting him and because I was overwhelmed by his loving gesture of correcting me. I asked for forgiveness and he gave it. It was there to begin with. But he didn’t want to just forgive me without pointing out my wrong because it was for my own good. The people pleaser in me is often scared to correct people. But I’ve come to realize that it can be the most loving thing to do. By correcting someone, you also honor them because you trust that they will take it the right way. Inasmuch as it may be painful, you deem the friendship worth it by taking that risk. Admittedly, I still haven’t mastered it. There are still people in my life whom I need to correct for having offended me. I’d want to give them the same honor I was given. Hopefully I will have accomplished that by the time you read this reflection. George Tolentino Gabriel (george.svp@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Who are the people I need to forgive in my life? Have I expressed it to them? Lord, give me the boldness to correct others out of love. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING Leaders must live exemplary lives as they cannot call people to discipleship without being labeled hypocrites if they do not. We should pray for all our leaders, secular and spiritual, every day. Their tasks are not to be envied as we probably do not realize the extent of their responsibility. If we are called to take their place we will be rudely shocked as to how difficult leading a community really is. Titus 1:1-9 1 Paul, a slave of God and apostle of Jesus Christ for the sake of the faith of God’s chosen ones and the recognition of religious truth, 2 in the hope of eternal life that God, who does not lie, promised before time began, 3 who indeed at the proper time revealed his word in the proclamation with which I was entrusted by the command of God our savior, 4 to Titus, my true child in our common faith: grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our savior. 5 For this reason I left you in Crete so that you might set right what remains to be done and appoint presbyters in every town, as I directed you, 6 on condition that a man be blameless, married only once, with believing children who are not accused of licentiousness or rebellious. 7 For a bishop as God’s steward must be blameless, not arrogant, not irritable, not a drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for sordid gain, 8 but hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just, holy, and self-controlled, 9 holding fast to the true message as taught so that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine and to refute opponents. P S A L M Psalm 24:1b-2, 3-4ab, 5-6 R: Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face. 1 The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. 2 For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. (R) 3 Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD? Or who may stand in his holy place? 4 He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain. (R) 5 He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, a reward from God his savior. 6 Such is the race that seeks for him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob. (R) G O S P E L Even Jesus assures us that we will be tempted. We cannot hope to avoid temptation. If we never experience temptation then we are probably already dead. Temptations do not hold any real fears for men and women of faith because we know that Christ has given us the power of the Holy Spirit and the victory of His cross to overcome them. Let us seek to use these gifts whenever necessary so that we will not succumb to the wiles of the devil ever again. Luke 17:1-6 1 Jesus said to his disciples, “Things that cause sin will inevitably occur, but woe to the person through whom they occur. 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were put around his neck and he be thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. 3 Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. 4 And if he wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am sorry,’ you should forgive him.” 5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” 6 The Lord replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” my reflections t h i n k : L eaders must live exemplary lives as they cannot call people to discipleship without being labeled hypocrites. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Isaiah 64-66 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | Qualifications for being a good Christian Paul’s letters are written mostly to communities, but there are also the so-called “Pastoral Letters” addressed to his closest disciples, Timothy and Titus. We do not know much about Titus but he was a well-trusted young man whom Paul sometimes sent on difficult missions, a young man who never disappointed his master. Today’s first reading is taken from the beginning of a letter addressed to Titus who was left on the Greek island of Crete to correct abuses and build up the still small Christian community and “appoint elders in every town in the way that I told you.” Even though Crete looked back to a great history and was proud of its culture, Paul calls the Cretans “undisciplined” and “talkers of nonsense and deceivers.” No wonder Paul is concerned with the probable negative effects of such a society on Christians who are not yet deeply rooted in Christ’s teachings. While Paul often encourages his communities to imitate him, in this letters he wants Titus to be a model whom the Christians could imitate and so survive the many threats in this society. I have been working for years in a seminary and I am quite curious about the qualifications Paul demanded from Titus and the elders. Today, when somebody wants to enter the seminary, he has to take an I.Q test, an English proficiency test, a test that checks on his knowledge of basic Christian doctrine and, lastly, a battery of psychological tests to be continued over his formation years. Interestingly, not even one of these qualifications were required from Titus or from the elders. The only requirements were to have a good character and to be a good person. The rest was left to the powerful work of the Holy Spirit. Times have changed, but the qualifications Paul mentions in his letter apply even today — not only for future priests and religious but for every Christian. Are we not all called to be models? Are we not all called to make Christ visible? It would be good to read St. Paul’s words slowly and reflect on them, asking ourselves whether we meet these qualifications or not. Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD Reflection Question: Reflecting on today’s first reading, do I come up to the standards of St. Paul for a Christian? Lord, I am afraid I would not pass the test of St. Paul. But with your help and the help of the Holy Spirit I know that I can improve and, hopefully, soon become a model for others. St. Cybi, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
