EVERYTHING HE HAD

“I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.” – Luke 21:3-4

Have you seen the movie Cinderella Man? It’s about a poor man who became a famous boxer. His wife disapproved of it at some point and went to his promoter to scold him for encouraging her husband to partake in such a violent sport. She felt he was just making money off her husband.
Upon arriving at the promoter ’s apartment, she saw that he had sold all his furniture in order to raise money for his entrance fee to the next big fight. He had sacrificed his comfort because he believed so much in his fighter.
The amount of what we give isn’t what matters. Its value lies in how important it is to us — how much we sacrificed.
It makes me think about how willing I am to part with my last mite.George Tolentino Gabriel (george.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
Have I been stingy in my love offerings and tithing? What makes me hold on to them?

Lord, help me to part with my last mite, knowing that You cannot be outdone in generosity.

COMPANION

1st READING

This vision of John speaks of the true followers of the Lamb, Jesus. The number is not meant to be taken literally — it is really a symbol for “many”. It is ridiculous to believe that only 144,000 people will be saved (Jehovah Witnesses) as that is far too small a number. We believe God is a merciful God; those who will be saved we leave up to His discretion and judgment knowing that He is both loving and compassionate. To try and put a number on it, like trying to predict when the world will end, is a complete and utter waste of time.

Revelation 14:1-3, 4b-5
1 I, John, looked and there was the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 I heard a sound from heaven like the sound of rushing water or a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. 3 They were singing what seemed to be a new hymn before the throne, before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn this hymn except the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been ransomed from the earth. 4 These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been ransomed as the first-fruits of the human race for God and the Lamb. 5 On their lips no deceit has been found; they are unblemished.

P S A L M

Psalm 24:1bc-2, 3-4ab, 5-6
R: Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.
1 The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. 2 For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. (R) 3 Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD? Or who may stand in his holy place? (R) 4 He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain. (R) 5 He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, a reward from God his savior. 6 Such is the race that seeks for him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob. (R)

G O S P E L

Ouch! Sometimes the parables of Jesus hit home so hard. I wonder whether I am able to be a little more generous in the way I support the Church and the poor? This is a critical question today as the Church seeks to reorient itself to becoming more and more the Church of the Poor, forsaking the comforts and benefits of the life of wealth for the preferential option to stand in solidarity with the poor.

Luke 21:1-4
1 When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury 2 and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. 3 He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; 4 for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

my reflections
t h i n k : How generous am I in supporting the Church and the poor?

SABBATH

The Most Precious Gift

“Jesus looked up.” This means He was sitting in the Temple area and resting. He was sitting in the Court of the Women, because it was there where 13 collection boxes were waiting for the donations of the faithful pilgrims. The huge Temple needed money. The many priests on duty must be sustained, wood for sacrifices was needed, and the vast area had to be maintained. Jesus was observing those who threw money in the collection boxes. From their clothes, He could see who were rich and who were poor. Jesus’ attention was suddenly drawn to a widow who offered the smallest amount. And Jesus praised her!
We give gifts on various occasions but not all gifts are given in the same way. A present can be given with a grudge and it loses its value. A donation can be made in public before TV cameras to earn the praise of the viewers and it loses much of its value. The most valuable gift is the one that is given out of love and in secret. “Let your left hand not know what your right is doing,” Jesus once admonished His listeners.
Here we ask the question: What do I give as my gift to God? Let us not speak about money. We have other things to offer as gifts: our time, our talents. Do we give Him just the surplus of our talents, of our abilities, of our own selves?
We have to understand that we are created in such a way that the self is simply the most precious gift that we have and we protect it with everything that we have got. So quite naturally when it comes to giving the gift of self to God, we tend to give Him what is second best and keep the best for ourselves. The little widow, on the other hand, basically gave to God her whole being, everything that she had. Not just what she figured she could live without, but she gave it all: her heart, soul, mind, body, all of her works, actions and thoughts. Every single thing that was God-given, she now returned to the Giver. The Lord asks us to give our entire being to Him. Yes, He wants us to give it all and He is going to give it all to us in return. That is what is being offered to us.Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
Am I simply giving of my surplus, or am I giving to God everything that I am and everything that I have?”

Lord, since the day I was born You have showered me with so many gifts that I will never be able to thank You enough. But how stingy I can be when it comes to offering You my gift of self! Take away this self-love and make me able to offer You my whole being.

Sts. Mark & Stephen, pray for us.
