Power –aide

“I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.” – Philippians 4:13

My children lost their dad when they were toddlers. They finished high school by the grace of God, and through the help of my parents, relatives and insurance companies. The insurance benefits ran out right before they entered college. Good thing God made my boys smart – the elder one got into UP (easy on the pocket); the younger one got a full scholarship from De La Salle College of St. Benilde.
Even if they’re diligent and hardworking, maintaining their grades wasn’t that easy.
One time my Benilde scholar almost gave up. It was the night before an important project was due. He hadn’t slept for days and was not yet done. He said, “Mom, I can’t do it anymore. But if I don’t, I’ll fail and lose my scholarship.” Pitying my tired and stressed-out son, I said it was all right if he lost his scholarship. God has always provided for us anyway. But I also assured him that God will give him the strength to finish.
My son got a power boost that night. He finished the project, passed the subject and kept his scholarship.Lella Santiago (mirellasantiago@yahoo.com)

REFLECTION:
Where our strength runs out, God’s strength begins.

Lord, thank You for always being my strength.

COMPANION

1st READING

We are the Body of Christ. As Christians we share all things together. We share our joys and we share our sufferings and pain. When one part of the body suffers, the whole body suffers. This is why it is imperative that we learn to empathize with one another and to walk with one another in all the events of our lives. In supporting one another, healing takes place much more quickly. Without help some sores and hurts may never heal properly.

Philippians 4:10-19
10 Brothers and sisters: I rejoice greatly in the Lord that now at last you revived your concern for me. You were, of course, concerned about me but lacked an opportunity. 11 Not that I say this because of need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I find myself, to be self-sufficient. 12 I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. 13 I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me. 14 Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress. 15 You Philippians indeed know that at the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, not a single church shared with me in an account of giving and receiving, except you alone. 16 For even when I was at Thessalonica you sent me something for my needs, not only once but more than once. 17 It is not that I am eager for the gift; rather, I am eager for the profit that accrues to your account. 18 I have received full payment and I abound. I am very well supplied because of what I received from you through Epaphroditus, “a fragrant aroma,” an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19 My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

P S A L M
Psalm 112:1b-2, 5-6, 8a, 9
R: Blessed the man who fears the Lord.
1 Blessed the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commands. 2 His posterity shall be mighty upon the earth; the upright generation shall be blessed. (R) 5 Well for the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice; 6 he shall never be moved; the just man shall be in everlasting remembrance. (R) 8 His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear. 9 Lavishly he gives to the poor; his generosity shall endure forever; his horn shall be exalted in glory. (R)

G O S P E L

If we have to be rich, then we need to learn how to use our wealth for the good of others and not just for ourselves. Money is a terribly seductive reality — it tends to generate a whole power and attraction of its own that is easily diverted by the world to its own pleasures rather than the service of the Kingdom of God. We need to realize that any blessing we receive needs to be directed towards the good of the Gospel or else we will find that it leads us in the opposite direction.

Luke 16:9-15
9 Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. 10 The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. 11 If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? 12 If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours? 13 No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” 14 The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all these things and sneered at him. 15 And he said to them, “You justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God.”

my reflections
think: We need to realize that any blessing we receive needs to be directed towards the good of the Gospel or else it will lead us in the opposite direction.

The “Worry” VIRUS

Worry is one of the worst illnesses today. Everyone worries — the rich and poor, young and old, healthy and sick people. Why so much worry? One reason might be the modern communication means. Our TV brings frightening news of wars, calamities and economic crises right into our living rooms. Other programs, especially advertisements, try to tell us that without this or that product we cannot live happily. And we begin to worry because we cannot afford to buy it right now.
Worry is like virus that infects most of us. A virus has to be identified and attacked by the right medicine. We have just tried to identify the virus — the causes for our worries. Now what is the medicine?
Actually, this virus is old and Greek Stoic philosophers already tried to find a cure. One of them, Epictetus wrote, “Begin with a cup or a household  tool; if it breaks, say, ‘I don’t care.’ Next go to a horse or a pet dog; if anything happens to them, say, ‘I don’t care.’ Go on to yourself, and if you are hurt or injured in any way, say, ‘I don’t care.’ If you go on long enough, and if you try hard enough, you will come to a point when you can watch your nearest and dearest suffer and die, and say, ‘I don’t care.’”
Can this be the cure for the worry virus? For the Stoics it maybe was a cure, but we shrink away from killing the emotions of the human heart. St. Paul mentions in today’s first reading a far better cure when he writes, “There is nothing I cannot master with the help of the One who gives me strength.” “The One,” of course, is the Lord.
St. Paul entrusted himself totally to God who became his strength — a divine gift. And so he could easily endure poverty, hunger and persecution, prison and flogging; but he could also enjoy success, friends and “a full stomach,” not because, like the Stoics, he had killed all feelings of the heart and became indifferent, but because he knew and was convinced that in every situation the Lord was close to him and would remain with him. What about us?Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD

Reflection Question:
What are the areas I worry about most? Do I lack trust in God’s Providence?

Lord, the fact that I worry a lot shows me that I don’t trust You enough. Increase my loving trust in Your care and concern for me and take away from my life those many worries.

St. Barlaam, pray for us.
